Anyone else think the bloom effects are too excessive in Halo 4? Besides that the graphics are actually good for a console. I wish they would bring Halo back to Windows.
For the next halo game, I would love bungie/343 Industries to include a choice of how you want to play the game like you can choose to play it with the aliens speaking their language, example: wort wort wort, speaking english language example: Ah, the demon is dead by my hand!, or the halo 3 and 4 versions just a fluent conversation.....
for me, the warthog controls are and have always been,,,sucky. To put this in perspective, the 360 controller is in use to control UAV's in war zones, real life, so lets not blame the controller here. The gearing and inertia code are just complete and total pants for warthog use. Sort it out!
I think a lot of people had written off the Halo franchise when Bunjie was no longer at the helm, kudo's to 343 for making (gasp dare I say it) probably the best game in the series to date. A lot of hate for the lack of gameplay evolution but if it works why bother fixing it.....I do miss the little grunts and their odd human expressions though.
They didn't even mention some of the downgraded textures that Halo 4 has, as opposed to 3 and Reach (even though it wasn't mentioned). Halo 4 is an excellent looking game, for sure. But, up close, it can be a bit disappointing, primarily in the enemy character models and some vehicles. I could always count on Halo to have near perfect model textures before, but now I don't know what to think. I've been enjoying Halo 4, but playing it has made me realize the limitations of the 360 and made me eager for a new Microsoft console.
No specific comments about the game as of yet ... primarily because it's the only Halo franchise game I don't yet have. Times are tough when the holidays come rolling in, you know what I mean?
However, I gotta say that this reviewer is awesome. Just as sharp witted as Watters. Well reviewed, Sir, well reviewed!
Halo 1 to 2 was pretty huge for me. They talk about it like it is insignificant, but does anyone else seriously disagree? I can still go back and appreciate parts of the game's visual style, and the textures really were pretty decent, the pop-in was just terrible. I would say 1 to 2 and 2 to Reach/4 are the real graphics and gameplay jumps. Its been a ride but I can't help but feel like Halo 3 wasn't the game I wanted it to be. Even going back and playing some of the multiplayer I get bored very quickly. Reach was much more of a harken back to the Halo 2 days of frantic over-the-top gameplay, and Halo 4 is beyond awesome, 343 has taken everything that is Halo and combined it with aspects of the modern FPS genre. This is really Halo meets CoD, I think we all can agree, but it puts Halo back in the spot it deserves to be, with this years best multiplayer. Back at it again tomorrow!
Actually, I feel a little offed by the way that Cortana, and Halo in general, has been altered over the years. The first game was called Combat Evolved, and true to its name, it was pretty spiffy combat for the time with the whole space super soldier vibe. Halo 2 took the series into more of a sci-fi fantasy fan fiction feel with all the political drama amongst the Covenant. Halo 2 introduced some interesting things to the story and lore, but it wasn't the space super soldier shooter that its predecessor was. Halo 3 went back more to its roots, in my opinion, but the sci-fi fantasy element was still present, and it is back with a vengeance in Halo 4. All this time, Cortana has changed from a cool AI character into a CG blue lady with huge...plots of land (like if you get the reference). I personally loved Reach because the story and feel were much more along the lines of Halo 1, what with the super soldier thing and volunteering to stay behind and fight to the death as the planet was getting glassed. I feel like 343 Idustries, while they have made an excellent game, have continued to bring Halo in to the sci-fi fantasy realm, which isn't much to my liking.
ok I am a big halo fan and I have never seen a comment of what I am about to post. Has anyone noticed that Halo one was much more enjoyable to play because the aliens never spoke english other than the grunts. The grunts would say frantic things in english like "he's here" or "run away" those things were hilarious. If you died the grunts would say something like "stupid" or Sargeant Johnson would kill a covenant and say "Bastard" and put another couple of rounds in to them. These things gave a feel of frustration as if humanity couldn't stand the covenant and vice versa. As for the Elite's the screams that come out of their mouths were priceless once they died. Either they were stuck by a grenade or a successful killing bout between you and them, the scream of death was awesome. Halo 2 the aliens started to speak english and calling master chief "demon" I believe it just went downhill from there. Halo was a comedy game for me and for them to remove it because they wanted a more authentic feel decreased the point of me killing the covenant, especially when they removed the blood splatter effect after pressing the melee button on them on the floor. Lastly, I know your saying well just play halo 1 and be happy. Well I can't because even the graphics on Halo Anniversary is crappy! Now if they made the graphics like halo 4 then I wouldn't have a problem at all! :)
@shadowx5 hold up let me get this straight so what you're saying is despite the fact that not 1 but 2 graphics engines are present in Halo Anniversary you are completely oblivious to both graphics engines.
Awww good times... I have been with halo since halo 1... I played halo 2 and got xbox live for halo 3. When ODST came out it was something different and Reach just didn't feel very halo like. I mean I liked it, it just didn't feel like halo. Now halo 4 is out and I look back and see what a crazy ride it has been for me and all of my friends. P.S just so everyone knows most of 343 is made up of old Bungie members such as Frank O' Connor who has been with Bungie since halo 2. I know there are many new people but about half of 343 is old Bungie members
@NInjagamer117 I do enjoy Halo quite a bit (the reason I purchased a 360 several years back was in order to play Halo 3), but the lore has drifted into heavy sci-fi/fantasy fan fiction, which isn't much to my liking. Having Haloxperienced developers stay on contributed to making a very good game, but the lore and storytelling for 4 were created primarily by people who were such fans of the game that they formed a studio devoted to it, so the feel of the storytelling has been more and more fan fictiony feeling. It isn't as grand as it once felt, in my opinion. I actually really liked Reach because it was more like the super soldier, epic missions story of the first game. Or maybe I'm just peeved that I don't own a 360 anymore and can't play 4.
You are right. I've been telling people this forever. How could someone let go of such a franchise? My heart and soul would be dedicated to this beauty if I was on their team. Such a wonderful ride it's been. My story is just like yours. Great IP.
Cool, it is nice to know there are still a few people out there who are still true halo fans. Now all I see is people just hating on something insignificant like graphics. A game is not based off of graphics but the fun you chose to have with the game. Also Bungie left because supposedly they were getting bored with making halo for 10 years. Although half the company was never bored and wanted the franchise to live on with the same love and care. So they stayed and created 343 and had to fill in the spots that the rest of the Bungie employees left open. Bungie now works for Activivision, I wish them the best but I think that working for Activision was a terrible idea. Bungie is making a game called Destiny so if you like Bungie go check it out. Like I said I loved the past 10 years I can't wait for the next 10 years. P.S To all you haters...not milking a franchise if they add a bunch of new things everytime. Why else would they always get at least a 9.0 rating everytime. If you want to see a company milking the franchise just look at Star Wars.
They should remake Halo 2 and 3 with Halo 4 quality graphics and cutscenes and sprint by default. Yes, talking is cheap I know but you owe us 343i so make it happen. Hell just fix Reach and I'm happy, shame to see all that content go to waste.
@IrishSweenz1790 Don't know, I just felt the campaigns in h2 and 3 we're all second hand compared to multiplayer. But they won't be remaking them don't worry. ;)
being someone that grew up with a nes and witnessed marios turn to 3d its really hard to find much progress graphically anymore..if you look at all four screens of halo with your eyes squinted you can barely tell the difference..Titles like halo are supposed to be the games that put graphics above other important aspects of games like innovation or new mechanics yet the difference in 10 years is barely noticeable compared to the differences of console generations years and years ago. Its impossible to have consoles take such leaps and bounds like they used to so they should stop focusing on graphical complexity and turn to more artistic elements and gameplay innovation instead
@obsequies Firstly, Halo has never been about the graphics. Of the 8 Halo titles, only Halo CE and Halo 4 could be considered to be at the top of their class. Secondly, how does making games with good graphics take away from the art or gameplay of games? The guys that are programming Unreal Engine 4 aren't going to make gaming better by losing their jobs. In fact, new engines allow games to be more innovate and more artistic. Lastly, you could make the same argument that the jump between NES and SNES "is barely even noticeable." A giant jump like the one between 2D and 3D may never happen again, but if you look at the evolution of game graphics, it has been pretty consistent. If we decided that 1997 era graphics were good enough would games really be better today?
@Lysander91 with the lack of anything innovative in the halo franchise all that's left are the polygons. I'm a independent developer so don't give me a runaround about this. I should have known that I would have ruffled a few fanboy feathers when bringing up progress on a halo article. the jump from 8 to 16 bit was huge compared to last to this gen. Titles like halo are examples of rehash milking remakes of mediocre titles of last generation. There's nothing considerably new in this franchise to the point where its almost a reskin. I'm not saying that upping the polygon count or focusing on that is a bad thing..I'm saying that there is absolutely nothing new with halo besides the minor..they would benefit the gaming industry if they focused more money on innovative ideas rather than trying to put a person in an animated movie all the time.
@Lysander91 and I don't mean fanboy in a completely bad way..being a fanboy is fine..everyone is a fan of something..but not admitting a faultline in something rediculous. I could be completely wrong about my first comment who knows..its just my opinion..but I usually don't say something unless I truly believe it and it sure feels and looks like halo and call of duty would fit well in the back of a volkswagen
the childish screams from the little gnomes in the first game really wreaked halo...would have been better to leave it out. being that this has visuals in the title I thought I would go off topic
@obsequies The "childish screams" were intentional, I believe. I would disagree that they were a game wreaker and should have been left out. I found them to be quite silly and memorable in a good way :). Amongst my friends, there is still the occasional squeeky-voiced call of "down in front!"
Stupid video made by a stupid person, how can you talk about Halo graphic evolution without talking about ODST and Reach? Stupid comments, who cares about the helmet display? Halo and Halo 2 were awesome by the time they were release and actually they are awesome games just the way they are even now, the comedy tone of the music and the clown voice of that jerk make it even more irritating, he thinks he is funny but he isn't.
@bielzabob exactly but they said that was in halo 3... i could do that in halo 2 on pc(pretty sure anyways)? unless it changed for pc because i thought it was exactly the same as the xbox version...
@luigidude77 yeah they had it in H2 but it was only a night-vision kind of look (green lines on black if i remember right. equally awesome for the time though.
I like what 343 did to the game in general. The only thing I don't like is the new undersuit similar to Crisis. I liked the previous desing better. The wear on the amor is really nice though.
