and i don't think 8k will take off until internet speeds can handle it right now the only way to get 4k is netflix amazon prime and sony 4k player and all of this is streaming to do 4k you need a speed of 50 mbs 8 k would need much more and the average household is about 14 . i have 100 mbs and i see netflix switching between 4k and hd during the movie so there ya go 8k already dead out of the water

honestly i have a 4k tv and yes much better than standard hd but its not like when you went from dvds to blurays that was a wow moment its not like that. almost like upgrading a video card its a little better . also same goes for ps3 to ps4 xb360 to x box one not a major jump . i remember going from the ps2 to xbox 360 i was wowed i feel like i was missing out by not having a ps3 the first time i seen gears of war wow. i was not wowed by the ps4 or xbox one i think we have reached a limit and were not gonna get much better than we have now . i mean gears of war is over 9 years old and its still amazing so graphics don't impress me anymore better give me good game play

@stve437921: Yeah, I thought that I was the only one that had that feeling. This gen still hasn't had the same "wow" moment like the past transitions had- you know, as if you were truly missing out on something. If I could go back, and know what I know now about the Ps4, I would just stick with the 360 and save my money...

@suppaphly42@justicar_1: Of course I was being sarcastic, 4K will not be the one to take off, however 8K might, or it will end up along side useless features and bad ideas for TVs like 3D was.

What I'm trying to say is that I don't really care about this "Ks" mambo jambo for now, since UHD is the other new thing now.

Resolution is nice, but graphics advancements in games are so small now. I know the cool thing nowadays is to say graphics don't matter but I think they do matter, maybe they're not the only thing or the most important thing, and it certainly depends on the game, but they matter, to me anyway.

I miss the days of being a PC gamer in the late 90s early 2000s when I'd frequently be very impressed by the graphics in new games. I guess it was bound to slowdown somewhat but I'm sorry I still have to agree with the "consoles hold it back" argument. Not just consoles though, even other stuff like display tech didn't help, LCDs came along and set resolution back years, affecting more than just games too.

@hystavito: What's this "consoles hold it back" argument all about?

Every time a new console is released, its creators do their best to compromise between price and power.

It is obvious that the success of a console depends on its eventual library of quality titles, but fewer game developers will create games for a console that few consumers will buy. Fewer consumers are likely to purchase consoles with big price tags and/or unimpressive specs, so that's where it would all seem to start.

However, the compromise between price and power is certainly subject to the level of technology at the time the console is being developed; if there aren't any significant advancements in technology which lower costs and/or raise performance, that is hardly the console creator's fault.

As console affordability also hinges on national and/or global economic conditions, saying "consoles hold it back" isn't a very convincing argument.

It is also a given that higher quality graphics take more time and effort to create, which always means bigger budgets.

So, no -- consoles don't hold much back. They simply serve as an indicator of where economies, technology, and budgets all meet in regards to video gaming.

@Renunciation@hystavito: That's all reasonable but it sounds a lot more like excuses rather than saying console don't hold things back. Consoles have to be priced to sell, yup, that is affected by global economies and technology, yup, and so they have to make them less powerful, and that's why they hold things back :).

Everything you're saying is reasonable, I don't consider it totally wrong or far fetched, but it comes down to causation, which came first, etc. I just don't agree with your "why's".

@hystavito@Renunciation: Hey, thanks for reading and responding. Now, if you will, go one step further and (mentally) replace every instance of "console" in what I wrote (and what you wrote) with the phrase "average PC".

Because, as you must realize, the quality of the computers that people buy are based on the exact same budgets, economies, and advances (or lack thereof) in technology that affect consoles.

I know, I know: "But the PC market is more flexible with all of the 'three factors' (tech, econ, budgets) because, unlike consoles, new PCs aren't released every 5 years!"

....Yes, yes, of course. And which people are buying top-of-the-line gaming PCs every 2 or 3 years? Or, which people are constantly upgrading their computers to reflect the latest advances in technology? A rather small minority, certainly.

And apparently, everyone else in the world is holding things back. Shame on the 99.9%, eh?

PC gamers - if you spend more it should run better than a console. You only get credit if you spend less than what a console costs and get equal or better results. Other than that you get what you pay for

@drizzygadget: Somewhat reasonable argument but only if you focus 100% on gaming and even then you still have to put aside factors like exclusives, modding, ability to share games through Steam, and a bunch of other things I'm not thinking about at the moment.

Even when we ignore those factors and go with your spending rule, the lower game prices on PC could negate the cost argument.

Well maybe I'm addressing a broader statement than what you are saying, maybe you are solely talking about performance results. Anyway, I think the old PC vs console argument cannot be made so simple.

I am definitely keen to get into 4k gaming simply because I haven't built a new PC since 2008. I won't have the money around until mid-2016, but by that time there will be a derth of 4k monitors with FreeSync or GSync, AMD's next CPU and GPU architectures will be out and competing with Intel's Broadwell and NVidia's 980 Ti, DD4 will be much more common, and Windows 10 will be out. It will be a good time to be a 4k gamer.

@suppaphly42@BrunoBRS@amdreallyfast@thespicychiken: texture resolution and polygon count are also heavy factors in performance. lowering those two allows you to improve the framerate.

hence, "make GTA 5 look like an N64 game to run it smoothly in 4k"

@suppaphly42@BrunoBRS@amdreallyfast@thespicychiken: To put it in simple terms, "lighting, particle effect, physics, etc." are what makes the in-game worlds look life-like.

You can have highly detailed characters and environments in games, but they will look a bit weird if lighting sources don't cast shadows correctly on 3D models. Likewise, thousands of raindrops can be shown on a screen, but they are not so convincing if they simply hit an object and disappear; getting a "splash" effect for each raindrop collision looks much more impressive.

This "eye candy" can make a game look wonderful, but it can also put a lot of stress on a PC or console.

If you can't see reflections on glass, the lighting is unnatural, and particle effects (such as dust, rain, fire, smoke, etc.) don't look quite right.... then that can be said to "defeat the purpose" of 4K high resolution.

@Renunciation@suppaphly42@BrunoBRS@amdreallyfast@thespicychiken: yes i know all this:P i'm a pc enthusiast. but bruno's glib interpretation with his N64 comment spurned me to jest. both you and i know all of the things you explained don't effect how much detail a texture has nor does it effect how many triangles are used. it only add depth after the fact.

@suppaphly42@Renunciation@suppaphly42@BrunoBRS@amdreallyfast: The whole time I was writing that, a little voice inside of my head was telling me, "Dude, don't bother writing all of that stuff about eye candy, go play Bloodborne instead."

Then this other voice in my head was like, "Dude, you're hearing voices in your head. Are you sane?"

And I was like, "Shut up, dammit. Both of you. I'm trying to write."

Then they were both like "LOL, okay whatever."

I should have listened. :(
