that's why i love good games today that most people underestimate. even games rated under 5. why? when i think what games i've played when i was a kid, i can only hope for a great playtime. but we must not let our guard down, cause once we tell developers they do great jobs they'll stop progressing.

While many of you hate it, Quake Wars is actually one of my favorite shooters.

I always like to see Id as very similar to the Roman Empire. They grew big by using some insanely innovative ideas that proved nearly flawless in practice. But then, they grew too big and eventually lost interest in maintaining their greatness. Eventually they crashed and startet tumbling down, gradually floating farther and farther into obscurity. Now they can't even make a half-decent, original game with some new ideas and/or impressive technical aspects. And don't tell me Rage had mindblowing graphics. I can name ten other games released recently that has just as good-looking graphics as Rage. You couldn't do that when you compared games to Wolfenstein, Doom or Quake. Nowadays, Id is one of the game-studios that struggle the most keeping up with the modern gaming industry. The only one that was worse at keeping up, was 3D Realms. And we all know how THAT turned out...

It must obviously be QUAKE. Why? - the first real 3D shooter - spawned Team Fortress, the basis for all real MP games today - made Half-Life possible, which spawned CounterStrike

Wolfenstein 3D was not actually the first first-person shooter. It was preceded by earlier games like Maze Wars, Hovertank 3D, and Catacomb 3D. Wolfenstein 3D did help to popularise the genre though, and to establish some of its characteristics.

Great memories! I remember being scared out of my wits by the Cyberdemons in Doom 2. I also sold 5 Saturn games so I could buy Quake 2. I then had to do the 25mb install as I only had a 850mb HD! Apart from Doom and Wolfenstein 3D I still have all of the other games with original boxes.

"Obey_by_the_Law Posted Oct 11, 2011 10:31 am GMT ID Software made really great games! Even though I Love Doom and the Quake series! Hexen is still one of my favorite classics by them!" They didn't make Hexen, just licensed the Doom engine. Same with Hexen II and the Quake engine. On another note, cheers Danny for speaking from a PC gamer perspective on this one! My favorite are the first two Dooms, though admittedly I talk about Doom 3 the most to non-gamers whenever the topic of 'Horror movies' come up. Because I can never be scared of a movie again after playing that game!

Doom, Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem were THE games that made me nag my parrents to death into buying me a pc. At school we used to play Quake on LAN, when the teacher wasn't looking -rocket jump anyone? Quake 3 was the sole reason why i bought a Voodoo opengl videocard (well thet and Carmageddon, but that's off topic). What do i think of Rage? Well it's pure crap. Sorry boys, but this game is awfull - graphics clip in and out and the dialogue stutters. I tried to fix them, but after a hefty 3 hours on the forum, modifying .cfgs, creating extra dirrectories, running steam commands, I just realised it would be easier to teach a monkey to disarm a bomb then an average gamer to configure Rage.

Absolutely excellent video. Growing up I never had the money to buy any new games. You better believe I played the living hell out of the Doom 1 first chapter. One of the best and most entertaining games I have ever played in my life. I really appreciate this video history. I do not plan on buying rage, especially after my loss of faith sense Doom 3, I still have great respect for ID for giving me many years of use out of my 166mhz gateway 2000 pc.

This guide is wonderful! It was interesting to learn some new to me facts. Thanks, Danny! I remember playing Doom when I was little... Didn't even have any speakers, but still it was great! And those eyes on the hero's face - left-right-left-right - cool! :) Present games are beautiful, inventive, exciting and interesting... But they will never stir up the same feelings I had, when chainsawing those ugly pinky bull demons.

Doom got me hooked on computer gaming. Probably spent more hours in deathmatch modem to modem with a friend than any other game. Had to buy a second phone line to be able to talk on one and fight on other. Could have caused a divorce I loved it so much. Just bought Rage for PC and am enjoying it....had to buy a Xbox controller for my PC as vehicle combat is such a huge part of this game that you HAVE to be able to control your driving more precisely than with arrow keys on keyboard. I don't know why they coudn't have made it where you could control left/right movement in vehicles with your mouse. I am enjoying it....graphics are great...not the feeling I got with Doom though.

When i got ps1, one of the first game i had was quake 2. I was afraid to play this game, because it was very dark and the game sounds was terrifying to me, so my dad played it. I liked just to watch how my dad was playing it. Quake 2 is the most memorable game to me :)
