I think it's a more novel implementation than other RPG's with this mechanic, as Puzzle Quest essentially is a knock off from Bejeweled.

Puzzle Quest, but with One-Armed Bandit gameplay mechanics, is the impression that I get from this trailer. That said, it's still luck-based gameplay. Cringe, those of you who despise luck-based gameplay.
