DBZ Xenoverse! I know this game isn't commercially popular, but the Season Pass was TERRIBLE. $24.99 for like 6 New Characters (all of whom are not iconic characters), a couple of new moves, and a few more terrible quests.

The last time I was really pumped at DLC was Artorias for Dark Souls and The Skyrim expansions. That's how you do DLC, man. A big ole chunk of content with new experiences, enemies, environments. Season passes are a BS trend in AAA gaming that really need to go away.

Those who commit terrible DLC value sins like these season passes seem to not have a decent idea of what they were trying to build in the first place, so they panic and follow up a bad plan with another bad plan.

At least it gives me very entertaining skits like this.

The Titanfall devs are the only ones breaking NEW ground by boldly eliminating "map pack fragmentation of the player base." This has been a dire problem in MP gaming for years, and by making all map packs free after the first year & consolidating all playlists, that problem is SOLVED. It's the only year-old game where I can immediately find a game any time of the week.

MORE publishers/developers need to embrace this new standard for MP gaming.

The worst part of Destiny's 'season pass' is that it was advertised as giving us a new raid with each dlc and they have now reneged on this deal. I can't tell you how p*ssed off this makes me feel. Raids were the part I wanted to play and the reason I bought the 'season pass'

Bungie, you sir, are scum.

I've ever only bought a few Season Passes (Borderlands 2, Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands Pre-Sequel, Evil Within) AFTER playing the main game and I haven't been disappointed yet. Sorry to the haters who've had a different experience with it......

@DETfaninATL: Yeah, kind of hard to throw the devs that extra money before you even know if you like the base game. Most of the time I end up buying things separately. I have bought Saints Row III and IV Season Passes. III after everything came out, and IV immediately because it was $7.

You are basically giving these companies, just like the government, interest free loans. I have one season pass, BF4 and by the time all the DLC comes out for it I am over the game. Never again.

The only game I've ever bought a Season Pass for was Borderlands 2, and I regretted it. While some of the DLC was very fun, some (arenas) were just filler. I've learned my lesson. The piddly savings you get from Season Passes just isn't worth it. Just wait a short period of time, and the DLC usually goes on sale anyway. Plus you can pick and choose which DLC content is worth the cost to you. So for me, I'll never buy a SP again..

If a gaming publisher can offer content down the road that is purely additional items then I am cool with that. But if the DLC is clearly something that should have been there from the day of launch or doesn't add anything to gameplay other than game skins then that's a load of crap.

@Attitude2000@kaluaj: You can tell when it's announced months before release. Take Arkham Knight. It was supposed to be out October of last year. Now, months before release they are toting a $40 season pass dlc. Some of that content should be on the game at launch. No non RPG game should ever have a season pass that expensive. Did people learn nothing from Destiny!?

I've never bought DLC or season passes as they always feel to me that they have been shaved off the original game and have just been treated as extra cash cows for developers/publishers as a way to generate extra cash from players without raising the price of games,

I'm sorry but you are stupid if you buy these season passes... :P
You are not even guaranteed to get what you paid for.
You are telling these publishers that it's okay for them to do that.
You are basically pre-ordering DLC, which is ridiculous in and of itself.

Many of these games are made on a yearly basis anyway so the games will be abandoned anyway.

@MegaPhilX2: I did, admittedly, buy the Destiny pass. It was my first, and will be my last season pass I buy. I enjoyed the dark below for a while. I since completed a platinum trophy of the game and moved on. Now with the House of Wolves about to drop, I can honestly say I'm not really the inclined to use what I already bought based on other games I'd like to play, and the lack of any really interesting content.

Lesson learned, for me anyway. Base game or bust.

Destiny season pass which apparently will last only half of the season. Game released Nov and Season pass DLC is done May 19. Big question is will Destiny have 2 season passes in one year? Since Activision owns them I expect Comet will be the 2nd season pass in the same year.

I never buy season passes up front. Once enough DLC has already come out that I want and buying the season pass is cheaper than buying them individually I treat them as DLC bundle discounts.

@GH05T-666: I never like this argument. One, potentially all the stuff could be be added without charging extra, but then the game would never come out, (however if you're that patient you may as well wait for it to be bundled together). Two, most of the time it never really takes away from the game.

The CEOs of these publishers would gladly pick up every gamer and shake them for loose change while cackling like a 60s Batman TV show villain. But the consumer is to blame just as much for allowing this to continue.

@aedanblack: God forbid a company seek profit. You think overpriced DLC is a problem? The problem is in the mirror. Your unending appetite for content that is currently costing ~ 1million a GB or higher to craft. Let's do some math. AAA game costs 50 million dollars to produce at the developer level. Publisher spends another 20-50 million marketing and distributing the game. Let's take the low end. So we're in for 70 million. Day one distribution prices to resellers are usually in the neighborhood of 25-30$ (if brick and mortar). For digital, it's generally 45$ (platform holders remove the platform licensing fees from asking price before taking their marketplace cut). From there, you have a negotiated cut which is anywhere from 15% if you're EA to 30% if you're Warner Bros). So yes, digital does see more money going to publishers and potentially developers. But let's go back to brick and mortar aka GameSpot/WalMart

Say you push 2 million copies through Brick--- and let's imagine you were magically able to do these all within the first 30 days before automatic contractually applied discounting mechanisms kick in which reduce the cost further as time goes by.

2 million x let's assume the high end--- 30$ = 60 million $

Right?

Well guess how much the publisher takes for their 20-50 million marketing costs?

Yep-- 40-60%-- USUALLY closer to 60%, but let's say 45% for optimism toward the dev.

That's *drumroll* 33 million dollars.

Remember. They spent 50 million. So they're only in the hole for 17 million now. while the publisher has either already recouped their investment, or is close-- especially if they managed their marketing spend well.

so now let's assume you can push another 1 million via digital. 45$ - MS/Sony/Nin cut of 15-30% (usually closer to 30%, but let's say 20%) = 36$

Minus the publisher cut of ~45% that we're using above = 19.8$

That's *drumroll* 19.8 million dollars.

SO, assuming FAVORABLE business relations (because unfavorable REALLY tortures this figure to the benefit of publisher/retailer)--- the developer of this 50 million$ AAA title has cleared pretax revenue of......

52.8 million $

Of course, that was assuming sales of 3 million. Some games can do that . Newer IP is a much more distant shot. Niche is a smaller chance, too.

So can you really blame a publisher/Dev for wanting to get a bit more mostly all digital sales from their user base? Sales which are, in this day and age, the difference between profit, just making it, and loss.

And 50 million is AVERAGE for triple AAA. Early last gen, it was 15 million or so. But game costs have stayed the same on the front end. So.. do you want lower quality game content (people are already complaining about Gen8 graphic quality) or higher prices? Or do you want the industry to go under?

No? Quit whining about DLC and publishers being "the villain". You think you can do better? Become the CEO or start your own developer/publisher. Until then, educate yourself.

@chippiez@aedanblack:

Nice napkin math -very enlightening. You omitted any kind of cost-sharing agreement or subsidization from the publisher towards the developer. You mistakenly assume the entire financial burden for the creation of a Triple-A game always falls solely on the developer and not the publisher. In any event, the consumer is entitled (ah that nasty word) to set their own valuation of a product’s worth and we are not required to bankroll any inefficiencies in product development or distribution.

You also neglected to realize the point of Lucy’s show which regarded Season Passes.Let’s just repeat this for the class: “Season Passes.”In other words, bilking the customer out of cash for some nebulous promises of “future content.”

I will ruminate on your invitation for me to start my own video game company but in the meantime, could you please send me a certificate for my “education?”It will look smashing hanging on the wall next to my MBA.

As a final note to help you along your way: In the future be sure to quote all sources completely, so we know you didn’t just ask your drunken Uncle Ted for his opinion on the state of the gaming industry.

@chippiez@aedanblack: I've always said this as well. People don't want to pay $60 for a game as it is, so of course they don't want to pay any more, so they say, here's the game, and if you want, here's some more stuff for the game for an additional charge. But now, they want it all in the same package and don't want to pay $60, which apparently is too much already.

DLC has to be REALLY good for me to cough up extra money for it. I think the last season pass I bought was Forza 4 (if you don't include buying CoD Ghosts legendary edition, worst mistake ever). Season passes just aren't worth the savings. You're bound to be disappointed by at least one of the DLC's that gets thrown in, and one lousy download essentially eats up the $5-$10 you saved by buying the pass. I vowed to never buy any more DLC until I watch/read reviews first.
