Survival Horror Minus the Fun

User Rating: 6 | The Evil Within PS3

If the only goal of this game is to scare the hell out of you, it succeeds. However, if you are looking for an enjoyable experience beyond simply surviving every terrifying turn in The Evil Within, don't waste your time. I counted down the days until this game was released (My favorites include The Last of Us & Resident Evil 4, no surprise there), but almost every other enjoyable element in those games is nowhere to be found in this one. The story is lame, the voice acting sucks, the graphics are dated and the controls are awful (I don't even know how many times I tried to aim my gun at an enemy triggering the live action menu screen by pressing too hard on the R3 button and was killed or attacked). Wouldn't be a huge deal but there is an extreme lack of health syringes to be found. The shortage is so bad that the only thing I could think of to survive at one point in the game was to upgrade my health bar hoping that my life would replenish by doing so (it did, thankfully). I understand that this game wanted to bring back the good old days of survival horror by limiting ammo, but come on.. I restarted it countless times just because I missed hitting an enemy and wanted to save my bullets. After doing so, you have to endure the painfully long loading screen, then trek back to where you left off. I did have SOME fun playing this game, but only during the brief moments where I was reminded of RE4 or The Last of Us. This game takes a huge step back from modern control mechanics that have improved gaming over the years. It doesn't even let Sebastian do a 180 degree turn, unlike its ten year old predecessor. Maybe it was meant to be scarier that way? Seems unlikely though. It seems as if maybe they would have spent a little more time tweaking the game that the final product would have been more enjoyable and worth the wait. Unfortunately, this game is just way too frustrating to enjoy. I give it a 6 only because I kept wanting to press on.. but just in hope that it would get better.
