Probably the best Star Wars game, ever.

Believe the other good reviews, TIE Fighter is immersive, long, easy to learn, and difficult to master. I would go so far as to say that these games (TIE, alont with X-wing) know exactly which parts of the Star Wars galaxy to take and build on, and which parts to abandon.

This game also teaches you something about the Star Wars prequels: People enjoyed the World War II dogfights and somewhat organized battles of the Original Trilogy. You had a sense that you knew how things were stacked up - fighters versus capital ships, bombers, etc. - and TIE borrows and expands on this concept. The prequels are more cartoony. Missiles hit enemy fighters and explode -- into a handful of small pesky robots? What? What happened to good ol' laser cannons, torpedos, and missiles? TIE represents the best of the golden age of Star Wars... a must play.
