Very rarely do game adaptations of movies or television shows provide an exhilarating experience. Most often developers stick to linear, repetitive story-lines that offer little more than a shallow recapitulation of an amazing movie. So, it was a blessing in disguise when I sat down to play KOTOR for the first time and realized I was not going to play one of the main characters for the Star Wars saga. Rather than a rehashing of an Episode, KOTOR expounds upon the mythology and science fiction that Star Wars fans have loved for years by adding a new story line. And because KOTOR’s story line exists outside of the series, the game can stand on its own two feet. Ultimately this provides an excellent game playing experience. Honestly, I was so entranced by the quests and character dialog I wasn’t bogged down by less than perfect graphics or the combat system which more than often brought onscreen action to a blinding halt. Whatever flaws KOTOR has, it makes up for it by allowing players to explore the Star Wars environment with a depth which has never been achieved before. Immediately upon finishing KOTOR for the first time, I ran out to my local game store and picked up KOTOR II. And if that wasn’t enough, KOTOR is one of the few games I own for both a console and the PC because I wanted to experience both games to their fullest potential. This is a game which ever Star Wars fan can appreciate, even those who don’t particularly enjoy video games.
