Hello, everyone, this is my first reveiw for a "true" Silent Hill game. I've played Shattered Memories and found it highly enjoyable. This game, however, is enjoyable in a different way. On to the review.

Graphics: The graphics are very, very good. Sure, some of the characters look a little muddy, but everything else looks great. The environments are all very claustorphobic and creepy and the Otherworld sequences are downright disturbing. There is some awesomly gruesome stuff in these sequences, such as a toy rabbit being pulled in to a wall with blood coming out of it. And, of course, that's the rabbit you need to continue. The enmies are great looking, as well. They look very organic and very disturbing. As stated above, the only real flaw is that some up close textures look a little muddy. 9/ 10

Sound: The voice work in this game is very well done and the sound effects are great. Each finishing move sounds extremely brutal and the monster sound effects are intimidating. The quality Foly work really adds alot of atmosphere to the game. Lastly, what little soundtrack there is, is hauntingly beautiful. 10/ 10

Story: The story takes a little bit to get rolling, but once it does, it becomes a very enjoyable horror story. It starts out with Alex Shepard, a soldier coming home from the war, going to his house because he's been having strange dreams about his brother and he's concerned. When he gets there, he finds his mother in a catatonic state and she doesn't know where Josh, Alex's little brother, is. Speaking of which, his dad is gone, too, as well as the reast of the townspeople, aside from a few. The only thing I found out of place is that early in the game, when Alex meets characters, he asks how they've been doing and not why everyone is missing, why a dense fog covers his hometown and why there are monsters everywhere. Other than that, I really liked the story. 8/ 10

Gameplay: I'm torn about this game, so I'll divide the gamplay into 2 sections.

The bad: The combat in this game is very clunky. Alex dodges with the grace of a drunk elephant, and half the time he doesn't succeed in dodging an attack. The enemies usually have an unfair advantage, as well. Alex attacks very slowly, but the enmies are very fast. 2 of the enemies, in particular, are very frustrating to fight. The zombie nurses take a while to attack, but they can back you into a corner and spam a very fast slashing attack that pretty much ends up in your death. The other annoying enemy is the Needler. They can block your attacks and quickly retaliate and when you must fight more than one, it's very frustrating. The bosses can also be frustrating, but they don't take long to figure out their pattern.
There are also long stretches of game time where you can easily get lost and wander for a long time. Without the map, it'd be almost immpossible to finish this game. There is also an annoying amount of locked doors.

The good: Exploring the haunted environments is very fun and the game puts the fear of anticipation to great use. One of the best environments in the game is in the hotel. It's very run down and all broken. You're walking down a hallway and all of a sudden you hear a light shuffling noise from upstairs. It's moments like these that makes this game awesome. This game balances out subtle scares and disturbing scares very well.
1 example of a subtle scare is in the hotel. You walk through a doorway and across the hall, is a door with a large hole in it. Alex looks through but can't reall see anything. A female's voice suddenly starts talking and asks for you to regain her "memories". Even after you do that, you never see the women. Is she a monster, or a helpless old woman? There are a few instances like this that are great.
An example of a disturbing scare is in the first Otherworld sequence, in a hospital. You come across a locked door, with your borther on the other side. He says he wants his stuffed Rabbit (Robbie, I think it's name was) so you walk into a near by room. There is a giant mirror on the wall and you walk towards a hole in the wall. All of a sudden you hear a crying baby. Then you see that Robbie is sticking out of the hole. As you reach for him, he is pulled into the mirror. Blood slowly pours out of the hole and you reach inside to get him. Alex suddenly has his arm attacked by some unseen thing and you must pull free.
The atmosphere of this game is great and it's the main reason to buy this game.

Final thoughts: Silent Hill is a great Halloween game.
