This doesn't follow your traditional RPG storyline--but the story is just the beginning of a whole list of incredible things about this game. The characters were all sypathetic and loveable, each with their own pasts and completely unique abilities and subplots and personalities. After a while, you began to realize the utter insanity of a team consisting of a man that can turn into demons, a former officer of the German army, a puppeteer, a fruity vampire, an italian fortuneteller, Anastasia Romanof, a young samurai, and a highly intelligent wolf... utterly unforgettable, and such a crazy mix up you'll wonder if you're running out of SP just thinking about it. The dialogue was clever and insane and stupid and funny and dark and sad and emotional, it was perfect and superbly written. The cutscenes were beautiful, and the in-game graphics not far behind. And the gameplay, as wonderful as it was unique. The Shadow Heart series uses a unique soul ring system, which integrates strategy and reflex, it's not just choose your command and wait, if you want your attacks to hit, and especially if you want to deal extra damage (or heal if that's the case) then you have to work for it. When I first started playing this game, I thought it was just going to be some FF knockoff that I could kill time with, but I realized very soon that this game was far beyond anything Square has put out so far. One of the best RPGs ever made, undoubtably.
