From day one, it's your job to catch fish and bugs and collect various plants for the sole purpose of gaining SP which is used to buy better equipment, bait and items to help you in your quest to catch fish.
When you catch/collect enough fish(ect), you can trade them in to Sasara, a scientist, for a card that lists a fact or two about said fish/bug/plant. Those cards can in turn be traded for 50 SP or, you can just collect 'em.
