The Walking Dead: Season Two Episode 1 - All That Remains Review

  • First Released Dec 17, 2013
    released
  • PC

New beginnings.

It's hard to imagine learning to trust anyone in the world of The Walking Dead. It's not just the question of whether or not people are basically decent. It's the reality that if you put too much pressure on even well-meaning people, sooner or later, most of them are going to break. And the world of The Walking Dead is a constant pressure cooker. But Clementine, the young survivor of the series' first season, can't hope to make it in this world on her own, and so she has little choice but to cast her lot in with a new group of people struggling just to live day to day in a land crawling with zombies and ruthless scavengers.

The first episode of the new season, All That Remains, has a few harrowing moments and a gameplay sequence that will make you squirm as you uncomfortably empathize with a suffering character, but the element that made the first season of The Walking Dead so powerful--those quiet, heavy choices in moments of human interaction--is largely absent here. The episode's focus is clearly on setting up the characters and conflicts that might pay off in later chapters; it serves a narrative purpose, but isn't especially effective on its own terms.

It's a new day, but Clementine hasn't forgotten the past.
It's a new day, but Clementine hasn't forgotten the past.

Almost immediately, All That Remains reminds us of just how fragile life is after the decline of society. It also reminds us of just how restrictively linear The Walking Dead can sometimes be, for a series that places so much focus on choice. As Clementine, you're required to make a colossal (if understandable) error in judgment in an early section that ends up having tremendous consequences. Throughout the game, this sense of tension between choice and rigid plot structure surfaces multiple times.

Quick-time event-style action sequences are still a part of the series.
Quick-time event-style action sequences are still a part of the series.

Yes, you make choices in conversations about what to tell characters, how much to reveal or to conceal about your past. But when you're locked in a garage and told by other characters to wait there until morning, you can't choose to stay put. Morning will never come unless you bust out of the garage, break into the nearby house, and go dangerously sneaking around. In moments like these, you feel the heavy hand of plot structure making many of Clementine's decisions for you. The episode also seems confused about just how capable Clementine is. At one point, a character chastises her for not working hard enough to develop some basic survival skills, which makes Clementine seem more vulnerable and imperiled. But later, she seems tremendously self-sufficient, tending to a serious wound on her own.

Much of All That Remains' time is spent bringing Clementine into contact with a new group of survivors and giving you an opportunity to learn a little bit about these people. Clementine's arrival sows seeds of tension in the group as some feel a responsibility to help the tough little cookie out while others don't want the group burdened with another member (who may, some argue, be a spy for another group that threatens their survival). There's the older guy Pete, who knows how to use a gun and can be gruff and guarded but quickly opens up to Clementine. A bit too quickly to be believed, I thought--the series doesn't have much time to establish its characters before all hell starts breaking loose, but Pete's candor felt like it was in the service of plot rather than serving the authentic needs and desires of the character.

Then there's Carlos, a doctor and fiercely overprotective father, who says that his daughter Sarah is different in some way, and that she can't handle the harsh realities of the world they live in. Sarah's a strange one, to be sure. She's clearly older than Clementine, but she acts much younger; she asks Clementine to seal their friendship with a "pinky swear," which the world-weary Clementine finds mighty strange. To me, it was almost impossible to believe that the clearly intelligent Sarah would have such an immature disposition at her age, but perhaps more will be revealed in coming episodes to support this characterization.

Characters may remember the things you say, but what impact these decisions will end up having isn't yet clear.
Characters may remember the things you say, but what impact these decisions will end up having isn't yet clear.

And it's this dilemma that makes evaluating this episode quite difficult. It's clearly not intended to stand on its own in the long term, and the characterizations it establishes may work better when more pieces fall into place. But All That Remains tries to cover a lot of expository ground, and characterization suffers as a result. Still, subtle voice work and facial details--a glance, a quickly passing frown--give us insight into Clementine's mindset, and because we have the benefit of an entire season spent getting to know her already, her emotions are accessible to us. I've grown to care enough about her that I'm more than willing to endure this episode's shortcomings to see what Telltale has planned down the road.

The Good

  • Some exciting and harrowing moments
  • It's easy to empathize with Clementine

The Bad

  • Odd tension between choice and linearity
  • All setup, little payoff

About the Author

Carolyn really enjoyed the first season of Telltale's The Walking Dead. She played through All That Remains on a literal movie screen at a literal movie theater, which was absurd. Then she played through it again on a PC monitor like a normal person.

I would like to have known how Telltale came up with the character designs for Rebecca.

I have the suspicion that someone over at Telltale was of the opinion that a pregnant lady would have drawn sympathy from too many players such that the opinions of players would have been imbalanced in favor of her. If this was true, then it would not have been a surprise that Telltale's story-boarders made her out to be such a douche.

Perhaps it may be some kind of lesson that Telltale learned from Larry's character design back in Season 1. Last I check, there were still fewer players who gave Larry the benefit of the doubt than those who sided against him.

I am both displeased and relieved that Telltale did not keep the dog for the entirety of the season.

I am displeased, because having Clementine learn the hard way about food aggression in dogs and having the dog die when she could have obtained a faithful companion was quite heart-breaking, especially after the ordeal early on at the prologue.

I am relieved, because Telltale did not do the trope of Man's Best Friend. This is a convenient and common story-telling device and I am glad that Telltale did not do this. Praise Apuleius.

By the way, now it's Clementine's turn to talk to herself; seems like Lee's special brand of insanity has passed on to her too. Yippee.

Just finished the episode. I think the game mechanics themselves have improved this time around, but the story just hasn't pulled me in yet. I really just don't find any of character's personalities believable so far. Perhaps it's just because we don't see their back stories in this episode but, still, none of them seem real to me.

Yup, the score doesn't deserved a 6 lol. Just played it and it was cool. Not like the excitement like in season 1, but it's still good.

7.5/10 round it to a 8/10

Lol. Wonder why she rate it a 6/10. That's funny since now there are more people hating on her. Haven't read some of the review yet, but I tried out the demo, and it was quite tight! Very fast than the last season. Really need to buy this! But, does someone know what months does Telltale release these episodes?

@uglypinkmoose Yeah, now I will do the same thing. Just bought episode 1 last Friday, and I feel regretted that now I have to wait for the first time until they released another episode. Next time I will wait too.

@Thesuperstar2k Yeah it's the best way to go..... kind of like how I like having all the episodes of a show available at once rather than watching them on TV weekly ;P

@uglypinkmoose yep that's the way to do it. I can't play just one 2hour episode then wait 3 months. get it as a complete package and it might even be cheaper by then as well.

@shreddyz exactly and at most all of them together would be 60 bucks at first which alone would be cheaper than buying all the episodes.

BTW, that black chick is so Irritating. I hate her. Zombies should open her alive, pull the baby out, bite it and turn it into a zombie in front of her eyes, and then let the freshly turned baby eat her alive while she screams in pain. And of course finish the whole process by eating them both and puking them to be eaten by zombie dogs later.

Bad start. Really boring. Shouldn't need upcoming episode to make sense. First Season was awesome at start. Why not this one? Bad writing is bad writing. Deserved a clear 4. Nothing more.

@nomailx I'm guessing because Telltale games are jumping too much on the success of TWD1?? They are working on too many projects at the same time...Wolf Among Us Ep 2,Game of Thrones,Tales of Borderlands...just too many to give proper focus on one game...

I got this game for my ipad for cheap. Clem's maturing into adolescence is great, she's a compelling character. The supporting class is a bit weak, but she's the focus.

The game plays well on the ipad and is at least an 8. Looking forward to more episodes.

yet another weak review from gamespot, im starting to trust there reviews less and less , i enjoyed the 1st episode of the walking dead season 2 even more then the 1st season. i give it a 8-9. A 6 for this game/episode is just a slap in the face.

I don't have a problem with the review score. I'm a fan of season 1, but if the first episode doesn't stand on its own it doesn't deserve a top score. Instead of being so preoccupied with the number assigned, read the commentary of the reviewer to inform your purchase of the game. That is the point, not taking pleasure in an arbitrary number assigned. It's not a contest to see which game is better.

Issues arise when you rate an episode of a story a couple hours at a time. It's like reviewing each episode of a tv show. I'm more interested in the overall score once it's done.

@placksheep i own the series I've played through the first episode 4 times now and its a good first episode for a series that can only get better, i've read the review and its still yet another terrible review by carolyn. the episode stand on its own very well, it grabs you within the first few minutes and keeps you interested all the way to the end. i would go as far as to say its better than the first episode of the first season. its just more adult.

Telltale started everyone off easy with the first season and now the full weight of what the world has become in the walking dead is starting to show.

First episode is setting the scene, so all setup and little payoff is just a ridiculous statement. This is just a bullshit review.Perhaps it's just me but this flowery type of nonsense review is fine if you want to try and win some literary award or something. But for the most part, people here want to here about a game in plain and simple language.

Thoroughly enjoyed the first episode of the second season, took it for what it was. The introduction of new characters, places and plot. 6/10 is just total tosh, especially as it continues from the previous season and not a great deal has changed apart from the odd gameplay mechanic. Should have been scored an 8, another decent game underscored again for click bait no doubt.

Wow reading many of the comments here makes me really sad. How about actually reading the REVIEW and not just posting a rant the instant you see a meaningless number? Kinda reminds me of how Ebert despised giving a star rating, because the stars don't really mean anything. They're totally subjective.

Reviewers are not supposed to be objective -- how the heck can an opinion of a game be objective?? Reviewers are supposed to write what they thought of the game. I suppose the only thing that can be thought of as objective in a video game are perhaps the bugs or framerate slowdown. But how useful is a review that just says: "It didn't crash on my system, and looked nice, and I didn't run into any game-breaking bugs. 10 out of 10!"

With this one, I played Season 1 and remember each episode as being relatively self-contained, with payoffs for your choices within each episode. Apparently the first episode of season 2 didn't have this, which was disappointing. That's understandable. And if you actually read the review, it says that this episode is clearly not intended to stand on its own in the long term, and may work better after more episodes are out. Seems fair enough to me. I've seen lots of TV where I enjoy the series as a whole, yet there are crappy individual episodes.

So lay off guys, if you want to know how much YOU will like the game, then play it yourself. Perceived popularity does not merit a great review.

@jlevy77 Snore..... you are being stupid. Of course you can be objective, professional people are objective at work every day putting aside their personal bias. It is not that hard.

Lets say Petit hates adventure games and scores any given to her with a score of 1. Would you still be defending her saying it is her right to be subjective? Gamespot is supposed to hire reviewers who can review a game as a game and set aside their personal life and politics. This ensures a FAIR and SENSIBLE review which MOST people would agree with and so ensuring Gamespot is chosen as a TRUSTED primary source of OBJECTIVE reviews. Instead they are sticking with her despite the growing mountain of complaints because of who she is.

You comprehend?

@ianpac Well then we have to agree to disagree on what the purpose of a review/reviewer is. I am not talking about "professional people" (your words, whatever that means) being objective, I am specifically talking about people who review media (be that games, movies, books, art, etc.). For example, "I think that everyone is going to love this game" is an idiotic review because everyone does not love every game. The Assassin's Creed games usually get good reviews, and I think they stink. GTA IV got 10/10 reviews -- I thought it was crap and returned the game (though I thought Red Dead Redemption was one of the best games I ever played, same genre). See how that works? It is called opinion, and opinion ain't objective.

Where is Petit interjecting her personal life or politics into the above review? I assume you are talking about her GTA V review, in which she thought parts of it were misogynistic. So now what, we shouldn't have any reviewers that identify as female because their estrogen might come leaking out into the review? That's crap. There is no such thing as an objective review (other than comments that the games are buggy).

Your example is (in your words) stupid, because it is a straw man argument. Petit isn't giving every game in a particular genre a low score out of bias (she happened to like Season 1 of the above game). Nor do I think Gamespot would hire someone who would. If you don't agree with her (after actually reading the review and not the arbitrary number score), then you're free to disagree with what she found lacking and buy the game.

You comprehend?

@jlevy77 @ianpac Wow no wonder you say the things you do, you are lacking brain cells. Nobody cares about your opinion because you are not hired as a professional reviewer. And nobody would hire you so you can tell people which games you think are crap. The fact you list great games as crap indicates you dont understand what objectivity means.

Normal people can set aside their personal bias are rate something as great even if they dont care for it themselves. What is the point of review sites if you believe anybody's opinion is worthwhile. Lets just hire people who hate video games altogether and listen to their valid opinion.......

You say my example is a stawman.......your brain cell count is crashing rapidly. You do realize an example can never be a strawman. You do understand this right? Examples illustrate lines of reasoning, strawmen are actual debating positions. They are quite separate tools.

Reviews matter. Bad reviews reduce sales. There is a professional onus to be fair and objective even if you are unable to comprehend this.

There are plenty of objective reviewers both here in Gamespot and on other sites. They produce objective reviews day in, day out. Petit is not one of them which is why she draws so much flak. If you want opinionated nonsense thrown at you then go watch Fox News and their likes.

The thing about Carolyn's reviews, is that you should always give the game an extra 2 points, because she docks 2 for little to no reason (possibly for her "feminist point of view"). So judging by that, I would say this game is about a 8.

@delta5931 Honestly, I had a feeling it was either her or McShea reviewing when I saw the game and the score. Those two reviewers seem to exist solely for the purpose of trolling readers and starting flame wars, and to be honest, they are chief among the reasons why I do not visit this site as much as I used to, because it honestly feels like their reviews have become uninformed to a degree, which makes them meaningless (remember how McShea couldn't even figure out how to play Skyward Sword and blamed the game?). Personally, I think both of these reviewers should be fired, but as long as they keep starting flame wars and earning hits, I doubt that will ever happen. Oh well, it's not like visiting other sites is too big of a problem: I'll take Jim Sterling's disturbingly accurate review of Beyond: Two Souls over McShea's sellout endorsement any day.

@ianpac @skimad432 I hear what you are saying Ianpac, but didn't like every major pub give Gome Home a nom for game of the year? I mean, it wasn't just Carolyn, and most had the stated reason of the story being the primary reason why it was nominated. It's kinda unfair to call her out review of gone home when everyone else was saying pretty much the same thinga bout the story.

@rdskns4eva @ianpac @skimad432 A bad review if a bad review, whether you score a game because of its progressive agenda or because it relates to your own personal circumstance you are doing the gaming public a disservice by not rating the game as a game not as a political statement you happen to love.

I still think this is too high. The series does one thing and only one thing. Story telling through choices. Everything else it does is mediocre at best, often pretty poor. Gameplay, control... Even at the one thing it does, story through choices, it often fails to deliver by only allowing you to chose between two evils why there is a third choice that makes the most sense but they don't allow you to do it; just for sake of emotional impact.

This first episode misses the choices more than it hits. Everything else is poor as it usually is. 'All that remains' is nothing interesting or good. This is the very definition of a game/episode that deserves a 4. It has an interesting approach which is good, but can't deliver on it at all.

@delta5931 @arinor Fair enough) I guess I was too vague with this question) I've already asked on a forum (using a spoiler tag of course) and got a reply. Also some guy told me that it's not necessary to replay the whole episode, you can select a scene or something. Maybe I'll check this out later.

Here is the thing... this new episode in not significantly worse or significantly better than what we saw in the first season. If anything I liked the mechanics better. So IMO giving this a 6, the best that would be expected for the first season would be a 7. And unlike many other game genres... it isn't necessarily expect that an adventure/choice game demands great technical improvements to deserve the same score. It's the opinion of the reviewer... but kind of unfortunate considering it has such visibility.

I'll agree many of the decisions were not all that hard to make. You can see that at the end when then show you 80%+ people have picked the same choice. Seems they could have used testing feedback to make alternate choices more attractive.

Still, if you loved the first season there would be no reason at all you wouldn't want to continue on with this adventure.

I see where people are coming from in regards to disappointment with Carolyn's reviews. I've also gotten the impression that her reviews are off in a significant way. When I saw that the Last of Us got an 8 I scratched my head. GS has become 'that website' whose reviews I put the least stock i these days. However, to personally attack her is downright wrong and much of the attacks are totally uncalled for and mean. You lose your own credibility when it's obvious your attaching hate to your opinion on the reviewer. Her sexuality has nothing to do with the reviews! It's obvious that prejudgement is alive and well among the gamespot community and for that we should be ashamed.

@skimad432 " Her sexuality has nothing to do with the reviews! "

Except here you are wrong. She openly admits that since she is going through her own female puberty then she is marking games according to her new gender and life experiences. Check out her explanation for her nomination of Gone Home as game of the year and you will see she is quite unrepentant injecting her personal circumstances and feminist agenda into her reviews and scoring games accordingly.

I have no problem with Carolyn being transsexual, I do have a problem when she deliberately invokes her personal issues into her reviews and scoring. Since she is knowingly not being objective then she should expect criticism.

Carolyn can choose to review games as a games reviewer or as a transsexual/feminist. At the moment she is choosing the latter which results in scores totally out of line with the gaming public which in turn means her reviews are pointless.

Personally, when I think a game is something I might be interested in, I do the following:

- Read the pro Gamespot review

- Check if the score from the pro matched what players rated it

- If it's very different, check the player reviews

- From the player reviews I read the ones that:

1. Don't have typo's/bad grammar

2. Don't give extreme scores (10/1)

3. Explain WHY they gave it a certain score

Pro reviews can sometimes differ a lot from my personal opinion, but do give me some clue about how the game mechanics work, wether it has loads of bugs etc. And I know myself enough to also be aware that what I find appealing in games, is not what most players tend to like and vice versa. I don't like games like GTA and COD, but most people reviewing these games do. It's not that I don't like these TYPES of games (I do like open world games like Skyrim and I do enjoy shooters like Quake/Half Life). Anyway; all I'm saying is: even pro reviewers cannot capture everyones taste. Their job is to explain without spoilers what the game is about and what they liked/disliked about it in their own, professional, opinion.

I've played the first season of Walking Dead and I really liked it. However, I really, really HATE having to stop playing midway into a storyline, so I'll wait for the whole season to be released before I buy it. And ofcourse, I'll follow my normal routine as described above before I do so ;-).

@Camoth2 Nonsense, you cannot expect people on the interwebs to think logically!

I think the game's strong point was it's sense of decision making, which, for a first episode, picked up quite nicely from season 1. So much so, it makes one curious to go back, and to replay the decisions to see how the outcome changes. I admire TellTale Games for bringing back the adventure game genre, and for going where others haven't in quite some time.

My only complaint with the game, that would bring it's mark down a bit in my eyes, was that it was simply too short for a first episode. I felt sorely disappointed when the game ended, knowing I had only invested a quick couple of hours. I would definitely like to see the episodes be a bit longer, to give a bit more of a sense of accomplishment.

Also, I felt very led in my decisions for the game, which pulls away from the feeling of having to solve them by using your brain a bit. "Find the lighter to relight the file". The game constantly tells you and leads you in what to do. What it has become is more of an interactive story telling session, taking more and more of the true adventure game elements away.

That being said, this is what it is, and it's a joy to play. It's a good solid 7 or 8, and can't wait for episode 2.
