The First Descendant Review - Grind Me Down

  • First Released Jun 30, 2024
    released
  • PC

The First Descendant's monotonous mission design and asinine grind is all in service of a malicious free-to-play model that puts monetization above all else.

The First Descendant is a bad video game that's occasionally fun. These fleeting moments of joy speak to the potential of the game's bedrock, where snappy combat ekes out glimpses of delight amidst a torrent of disappointment and frustration. Everything surrounding the game's fast-paced shooting is painfully dull, tedious, and egregiously predatory. The First Descendant is a free-to-play, third-person looter shooter that feels like it was designed to please shareholders rather than the people playing it. It's derivative and soulless, bereft of new ideas outside of the myriad ways it attempts to extract money from its player base. It's a foul example of a game designed around monetization, even in a market saturated with freemium looter shooters.

It doesn't start on good footing, either. The First Descendant's story is convoluted and sterile, but the basic premise places you as one of the titular Descendants--a group of humans with unique abilities passed down to them from their fallen ancestors. You're tasked with fighting for the survival of humanity against an invading alien threat known as the Vulgus, who traveled to the colonized planet of Ingris in search of an infinite energy source.

Now Playing: The First Descendant - Xbox Extended Gameplay First Look

These interdimensional invaders come in all shapes and sizes, with very little in common regarding their visual design. Some look like gray-skinned humans; others are grotesque creatures with large glowing claws. There are sleek and smooth-edged robots, but also clunky ones, too. Some are made to resemble humanoid lizards, while others are floating orbs that shoot lightning. There's no cohesion or unifying theme to the Vulgus. Even their names range from Greg to something more alien, like Alzaroke.

This might seem like a minor gripe in the grand scheme of things. If the enemy looks cool, then who cares? But it's indicative of the game's poor approach to storytelling and worldbuilding. Maybe a lot of these disparate enemy types are slaves or were sworn to fealty in exchange for their lives. That would heighten the Vulgus threat and explain the dearth of cohesion, but I never encountered anything like this. The story is more concerned with incessantly regurgitating the same plot points and burying you beneath a mountain of laborious jargon, often saying things without saying anything at all. There's almost no character development or any shred of personality in sight. It doesn't even end, cutting off at what feels like the halfway point so the story can presumably continue in forthcoming updates. But who wants to see more? The best way to experience The First Descendant's narrative is by skipping it entirely.

Combat is at least snappy, and the standard assortment of assault rifles, snipers, and shotguns generally feel impactful unless you're fighting one of the game's bullet sponge enemies. Seeing numbers pop up as you fill an enemy with lead is as inherently satisfying as it usually is, and each character has access to a grappling hook that lets you zip around the environment and pull yourself toward enemies. The First Descendant is a fairly mobile shooter and incentivizes constant motion, either to avoid incoming fire, venture into a crowd of enemies to unleash AOE attacks or zip to the outskirts of a battle to take out a pesky sniper. The loot you earn from all of this shooting is distinctly bland, however. You're constantly submerged in so much nebulous loot that most of it feels meaningless. Every assault rifle feels like every other assault rifle, so you're simply picking whichever gun has the highest DPS and disregarding the rest.

Fortunately, The Descendants and their abilities are varied enough that each one feels unique. There are 14 playable characters in all, five of which have more powerful Ultimate variants. At the beginning of the game, you're given a choice between one of three starting Descendants. Then you can unlock or purchase the others later, if you so choose.

Each Descendant has four active skills that operate on a cooldown, along with one passive skill. I started with Viessa, who uses ice attacks to deal damage and freeze enemies in place. She's fine but can't compare to Bunny, the first new character you unlock. Bunny epitomizes the game's mobility with her lightning-quick movement and devastating electric attacks. The more she runs, the more electrical energy she accumulates, which you can then unleash in powerful shockwaves. When you're in full flight, you're essentially a roving AOE attack, able to weave in and out of enemy groups while zapping them to death. It's fun, particularly when combined with an SMG or shotgun, although I wish there was some semblance of synergy between each of the Descendants.

You can play the whole game solo, but it's incredibly easy to join other players in co-op, which feels essential in later missions. Aside from making life easier, however, there's little difference between playing by yourself or with others. Ajax can deploy a domed shield for everyone to use as cover, but I didn't encounter another example of a Descendant's skills working in tandem with others or even benefiting them. Take Valby, for instance. She can liquefy herself, which leaves a trail of water in her wake that damages any enemies standing within it. It would've been cool if Bunny could then electrify this water and inflict even more damage, adding a much-needed element of teamwork while also altering the dynamics of combat. But that's not the case.

Any of The First Descendant's other positives are quickly undermined by its stale mission design and arduous grind. The game's basic structure sees you visit various locations where you're tasked with completing a few short missions in an open area before moving on to a linear, dungeon-esque Operation. These missions consist of the same few objectives over and over again, typically revolving around killing things and standing in circles to hack or defend something or other. It gets tedious fairly quickly and is then extrapolated across a full 35-hour game and beyond (because the endgame also has you repeating these same missions).

It's incredibly boring and monotonous, and is made worse by the fact that most of these objectives often stifle your class abilities. Bunny needs to be allowed to run free, not be confined to a circle where you're forced to stand still and shoot waves of incoming enemies. The enemies themselves don't make this interesting, either, as they are intent on jogging towards you in a straight line. They don't roll or take cover; they're mindless drones lining up to be shot. There are a few exceptions to the rule, but even the enemy type that teleports just looks like it's lagging across the map.

Operations fare slightly better, but even these longer missions still frequently include the same dreary objectives. Worse still, the bosses waiting for you at the end of each one share an identical pattern of events. After depleting their initial health bar, each boss becomes invulnerable, being shielded by floating balls. You need to destroy these balls--sometimes in a specific order, sometimes all at once--to take down their shield and resume dealing damage to their health bar. This is fine the first time you do it, but it repeats on roughly 95% of the bosses you face. Add in the fact that these bosses often share the same attack patterns or simply just stand there and shoot you, and these battles are another terribly dull and exhausting element of The First Descendant's design.

For as bad as all of this is, it's made significantly worse by the game's approach to progression. In order to unlock new Descendants and unique ultimate weapons, you need to gather a bunch of materials to construct each one. Partway through the game, I was given a side quest to unlock a new character called Freyna. This involved playing three missions for the chance to acquire three different materials. I spent almost an hour replaying the same two-minute mission on repeat, just hoping to receive an item with a 20% drop rate. After that, I did the same with an Operation, spending over an hour repeating the same mission waiting for the material I needed to drop.

My reward for trudging through the same banal missions was a new character that I then needed to wait 16 hours before I was allowed to use. Not only is this mind-numbingly dull, but this vapid approach also encourages toxicity. I encountered a few occasions where a player remained idle throughout an entire Operation, presumably sick of having to play the same mission ad nauseam. All of this seems to be by design, as the workaround is to relent at the sheer tedium of it all and spend real money to expedite the process and gain immediate access.

The First Descendant's storefront is inundated with an overwhelming amount of things you can purchase with real money. There's a tab dedicated solely to "Convenience," offering boosts to speed up the deliberate inconvenience of the game's grind. You can pay to decrease the timer that's placed on everything you unlock; pay to unlock more mod slots, which directly correlates to how powerful your character is; pay to unlock Descendants themselves, who vary in price but always cost just over the amount of in-game currency you're allowed to buy, forcing you to pay more. If you want an Ultimate version of a Descendant--which comes with increased stats, additional mod slots, more powerful attacks and skills, and a few skins--it will set you back around $104.

No Caption Provided

You can unlock Ultimate Descendants by playing the game, but then you're looking at sub-3% drop rates on all of the materials you need. It's obscene, especially when the game also has a premium battle pass and no shame about exploiting practices like restricting single-use armor dye to one piece of clothing. And while it may not be a competitive shooter, those who bypass the game's grind still create a significant imbalance during Operations. Powerful characters, particularly if they're speed-based, can blaze through these linear levels to the point where other players won't even see an enemy. The entire game is built to make you want to acquiesce and part with your hard-earned cash. A $10 Descendant starts to look mightily appealing when the only other option is mindlessly soul-crushing, and that's the whole point.

The First Descendant has moments of fun, but its action is constantly debilitated by tiresome mission design and a grind entirely informed by its venomous monetization. It's designed to frustrate and steer players toward an extensive storefront that lets you circumvent some of its monotony, only to be met with even more. There are no redeeming features to its intentionally infuriating free-to-play model; it feels like a game designed in a boardroom, where every single aspect of its design is secondary to the pursuit of making more money. It's a sad state of affairs, and I wouldn't recommend The First Descendant to anyone.

The Good

  • The combat's fast pace and mobility, along with the unique skills of its Descendants, make for an occasionally fun time

The Bad

  • Mission design is incredibly limited and increasingly dull
  • The soul-crushing nature of its grind is all in service of the game's monetization
  • Every aspect is predatory and designed to get you to spend money

About the Author

I am Korean and I believe the blatantly racist reviewer of this game spot should lose his job, this guy is a low level solo player with gritted teeth. I'm easily farming two Ultimate Heirs and Sharen and Enzo in 30 hours of play without spending any money and this is the essence of this game, the characters are unique and fascinating, the boss fights are fantastic. You say it requires fusion skills, which is a good point, but what multiplayer game has that been possible in? Mostly it's losers who can't grasp the essence of the game and whine about how hard it is to farm, but you're an editor at Gamespot? How dare you give it a 3 without even trying to make an Ultimate (you have to run bosses, pillage, and dungeons) Seriously, my 8 year old son is better than you.

400 hours in - Same with a lot of great games such as Elden ring, cyberpunk, RDR2 etc.

This is a really good game - not a 3/10

It's very apparent you are a normie who has skill issues

I remember when Kevin reviewed Destiny 1. Yes Destiny 1 was a bit weird at first but it was the first chapter of a hybrid mmo game and Kevin really didn't know how to approach destiny and it was clear in his review he didn't know how to play it. This review smells the same smell.

I get the reviewers points and to some I agree but the 3/10 is for broken unpolished and unplayable games not for this. I'm already in 120h and I find the game very fun. The loop for getting items and the drop changes is what people are chasing and it's fun. Art style is amazing, characters are well designed and the modding system on chrs and weapons is superb!Gunplay, co op and colossus battles are so fun! Story? who the f@ck gives a sh@t for story in a Looter Shooter game? I skipped every cinematic cause I wanted to go to action! lol. The progression for end game is well designed to, as the character is getting stronger and stronger it has a real impact on the game witch is very satisfying. I'm really enjoying the game and I haven't spend a single dime!

Here's hoping Nexon takes this game and makes it something more like No man's sky, Warframe, Cyberpunk (not live service, but fits in this category of making a come back) etc and gets a better score. Redfall deserved a little more leway for the developers to make it better if this is the case. A 6/10 on its launch means it had a lot of potential (but those poor vampires got crucified and got sent straight to the virtual abyss lol) rather than not letting more updates and to work on it and having their studio shutdown and getting layed off. Arkane austin didn't deserve to get shutdown if they were still planning on taking care of the game and making it better as the years went by for a live service game.

Still believe F2p/live service games shouldn't be reviewed at launch, these games are supposed to be made for the long haul, because we're not getting the full picture of these games right away. These games need time and a review right away can seriously hinder some of these studios getting their vision and funding for their project accomplished. Let gamers decide on these games at launch, if they get enough funding and they update the game and it's continuing year after year with new content and updates to keep players hooked, then you know it has enough traction to start a serious review on it. Otherwise if it fizzled after 1 year because players weren't interested in it or they really were just trying to "pump and dump" for a quick buck, then no problem didn't have to waste your time reviewing it.

P.s. I'm still waiting on that Warhammer: rogue trader review ....last i remember it was a review in progress and never got one. Now that's one of the many game that needed a review at launch and didn't get one lol.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this game previously reviewed and got 7/10? I saw it online and on your IG post, but now I can't find any of them. I remember because I thought that your score was fair compared to the 5 that IGN gave to the game. Now we have a 3/10 in a review that seems to have a hidden agenda.

I'm 146 hours into a game where the only money I decided to spend was on a skin for the character I'm using. I have unlocked 5 characters (Lepic, Freyna, Bunny, Sharen, and Valby) without spending a dime, and I'm currently working on unlocking Kyle. The real grind is for the ultimate versions, that I've been working on because I'm not going to spend money on them.

I've been amazed that an F2P game has given me more fun than other established franchises (FIFA, COD). These games year after year provide the same dull experience with a different coating, but they have never received a 3/10, even though they haven't changed their formula in years, and also have microtransactions.

I was disappointed with IGN's review and found solace in Gamespot being fair and objective, but I guess I was wrong and it's up to us gamers to try the games and not let someone else's experience dictate what we see as a game worthy of our time.

Agreed with the review. The art style is also hideously generic, if we can even call it an art style at all, really. Most of the armor design doesn’t make any sense either. Worst game of the year so far, and even for free it’s a massive waste of time. Just because something is free doesn’t mean it’s worth playing. I think more gamers need to do better things with their time instead of playing every free game just because they’re there. Trash game across the board.

@xikaryo: WTF does hideously generic even mean? Sounds like an oxymoron. Most people who play this game outright say that the character designs are a big part of why they gave it a try. To me the visuals look much more appealing than most Western AAA games these days.

@plurmp: “most people who play this game outright say that the character designs are a big part of why they gave it a try”

Lol, you answered your own question with that information. Let’s be honest, lonely gamers saw Bunny and were attracted to her video game polygons, thought it would be the next big thirst game for basement dwellers who have never touched a girl in their lives.

The difference between this and Stellar Blade is that Stellar Blade was actually good, was single player with zero microtransactions, free post launch content, no grinding, amazing story, top tier combat, and beautiful soundtrack.

First Descendant is a free to play game that charges you tons of money and time for cosmetics and the mission design is beyond dreadful. There is nothing good about the game.

@xikaryo: "Lonely gamers". Why is this always the assumption whenever a character is aesthetically pleasing and not a disfigured pile of lard? You don't have to be lonely to appreciate visually pleasing character designs. That used to be common sense. Most people would rather look at renaissance paintings than ugly modern art. On the contrary, the people who complain about attractive characters tend to be ugly themselves.

I played it and for me it was meh, but 3/10 is a bit extreme. I feel like the reviewer has some sort of agenda here. Yes, the microtransactions are not great but it should be noted that you can progress in the game without spending a dime. There's absolutely nothing stopping you from completing the main campaign for free and you will get Descendents for free along the way without spending any money- you just won't get nearly all of them or maybe not the ones you want. In terms of grind, for a Korean game it's exactly what you'd expect.

I'd easily give this game a 6. It's good looking albeit a bit generic, the combat is fine, and I haven't encountered any game-breaking bugs. I wish reviewers here would review games based on how the actual game plays and functions rather than their feelings on the business model. The artists, programmers, and designers that put time into creating games can't control what the business side does. This site is called Gamespot, not Developerspot or Publisherspot.

@cditurisound: For every comment like this, we get one that says "How come you gave something with microtransactions such a high score???" Can't please everyone.

That's why they write reviews and don't just slap scores on things.

The reviewer is smoking something silly.

I’ve completed the main campaign only doing the main missions and I’ve unlocked 4 descendants without spending a cent.

You don’t need to engage in the microtransactions to play the game or advance in anyway. Main path is decent enough. Time will tell if the endgame can keep the game relevant though, like most of these live service games. Games a solid 7

Played it for something like 60 hours currently and have had a blast with it the entire way through. The grind doesn't even feel that bad and I absolutely hate grindy games. The shooting is solid and impactful and it's precisely the kind of gameplay that I want from a game. Sorry the reviewer didn't like it. In fact, critics have been overly harsh to this. It's a F2P game you don't need to spend a dime in and it's got excellent, fun gameplay. The review doesn't even mention the Void Intercept bosses, which is one of the most fun and challenging parts of the game. I feel like gamers have become spoiled, expecting AAA quality, even in something that is F2P that you don't need to spend any money in. For a F2P game, this is a game that I've probably had more fun playing than anything else I am playing at the moment.

Game is modeled bad. First of all Ultimate items and descendants not very ultimate at all. In fact weapons\reactors actually a downgrade since it requires you WIELD them not just equip like a purple. 2nd off everything about them is negative they typically less base dps than the purple counterpart for weapon. AND you have to make the weapon level 4 to get rid of all the negative effects. All that work for what basically amounts to half the dps of a decent Tamer with some garbage unique ability.

Everything on the store is basically just paying to do everything the game has to do. You buy all your descendants then what? IS basically nothing to do except farm up new weapons which in reality does not take long if you not distracted. And your catalysts just an annoying farm you got to do.

Farmed up to mastery 21 without the paywall. But if you want to go further you will at least buy descendant slots or be erasing a whole lot of them already deleted blaze and gley(Farmed Ult gley).

It seems this is what we're supposed to get used to when it comes to live service/F2p games from the beginning, a base game with hardly any story. If players in the beginning support the game with their wallet and they get enough funding they'll start adding the "meat and potatoes" next and give you what the game is supposed to be, but first thing is first they need the money. As a result we should expect generic scores for these games if they start out like this; and get a re review if they A) survive their first year B) updated their game from a basic core concept to more details i.e via story, gameplay, enemy variants etc. ala Warframe. I think I would prefer if there aren't any reviews for these games in the beginning of their launch, just because this is what is expected, just let people play the game see if it survives and has a pulse after it's initial year and the said company of the game is invested in taking this game further, these games need a 4 year+ window to be judged seriously.

Ton of potential here. I say in a year, it will finally feel like it’s supposed to.

@ZombieVirolina: "It sucks now but in a few years" is not acceptable for games. A game should be a decent product at launch and only get better with time. And Warframe is hardly any less soulcrushing in its grind.

The grind is part of what some players enjoy. Think Warframe. That is essentially a grind-fest, yet it still manages to be fun during the process. But remember, people bombed the hell out of Warframe when it first came out too. Now, with time and changes made with players interests in mind, it has become a bit of a staple game for these kind of class based shooters.

Whether Nexon cares enough to listen to players and help enhance the game over time is the big question. Unfortunately, I don't think they will. But I could be wrong. Time will tell.

@RELeon: They've already had positive response to updates they've made based on things players were unhappy with. I don't think we need to worry about them being receptive to players wishes.

@RELeon: You don't think they will listen to players? They've been listening to players since the first technical test, I don't even remember the last time a development team listened that much to the community, which is honestly weird coming from Nexon... I just hope they keep that up over the years.

I have about 130hrs in and im enjoying the game. I dont mind grindy games, but some blueprint percentages are not accurate. The developers have addressed the complaints about this and are going to tweak it accordingly. But it doesnt detract from it being a bad game. The game has only been out for 2 weeks and there is lots of room for improvement and development to suit the player community. Also another thing I find with grindy games is that everyone wants everything right away, and when they get everything they get bored with the game they are playing. It's going to take time.

So to give it a 3/10 is a bit harsh. :(

Yeah, seems like there are already better free to play progression grinds out there, and I'm not seeing anything particularly novel about The First Descendant.

@mogan: i spent the first half of this year confusing this game with last berserker, glad thats finally over. If theres another game called the middle assailant or somthn like that i wouldnt be surprised at this point.

Not played this, or even really looked into it, but I assume the grind is part of what people are into. They want to put in a lot of hours to unlock all the stuff you need to be more powerful.

I'm not saying I agree with that, and it certainly isn't for me. But that's the impression I get with games like this. I wouldn't say it's predatory because you should go into a game like this fully expecting it. It's Free to Play but they aren't giving you a game out of the goodness of their hearts. They're going to try and nickel and dime you at each turn, and they're going to deliberately make the game feel tedious in places to see if they can finally get you to crack and open that wallet.

Accurate. I can't say a single minute of my time with the beta was fun at all. Always wondering when the fun part would come, or when I'd unlock something fun to use. Just a shell of a game.

What a joke review... It's a free to play game and and the reviewer complain about having a store for convenience. You got to play 40 hours without any paywall or anything and you can continue playing for a hundred more hours and you won't find a paywall unless you want to collect every descendant without dismissing a single one you don't use/need.

The business model is not predatory at all, I don't even think this reviewer knows what that means. Cosmetics are often locked behind the store in soooo many games but here you just have to complain about it, the bias couldn't be more obvious.

It's a grind game, if that's not your cup of tea then you shouldn't be reviewing this game, it's not for you. Reminds me of the same Gamespot reviewer who gave Rust like a 4/10 because the PvP survival aspect was too hardcore when that's the whole essence of the genre... Who knows if it's the same reviewer.

@rolento25:The average steam reviews disagree with this. The game has been getting positive feedback for most of its life span and also has sold quite well. If you consider Rust to be a 4/10 game then the game is definitely not for you to objectively review it.

what a worthless review the game is free and fun you can get everything but cosmetics in game for free it just takes a bit of effort not even that much and the craft times are the same as warframe and how it works and i enjoy that you don't have to spend all your time on it to get anywhere just pick it up and go after something cool plus the first season has not even started yet give it some time to build up warframe is going strong now but the early launch game was a mess with no real story or direction meanwhile this has just started and has to get momentum built up also this guy can't read valby does boost electric and non elemental damage and slows all at once

I tried it for a few hours, I didn't think it was bad, but I didn't have fun either. Many people are enjoying it, but if I wanted to play a game like that, I'd just get into Warframe again.
