Super Bomberman R Review

Old-school bombing fun.

It’s been several years since we last saw Bomberman, but if ever there were a perfect time for the bizarre little bomb-crazy robot to make a comeback, the Nintendo Switch launch is it. Long beloved as one of the greatest multiplayer party games, Bomberman’s classic, simple premise is a perfect match for the Switch’s focus on social play.

Super Bomberman R holds on tightly to its roots, with entirely familiar controls and gameplay. For most of the game, you run around a small maze, moving in four directions, planting or throwing bombs to dispatch your enemies. Destroying certain blocks can reveal power-ups that enable you to toss more bombs in a row, increase damage and speed, and change the bombs into different forms. Meanwhile, power-down pickups can reverse effects, which lowers bomb damage and the number of bombs you can throw.

Now Playing: Super Bomberman R - Planet Timbertree Gameplay

The golden rule of Bomberman is simple: Don’t get blown up. The meat of the game is the multiplayer--and, thankfully, the developers at Konami and HexaDrive didn’t skimp here. Making natural use of the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers, local play allows up to four to gather around the portable screen--or eight when playing on a TV. If you don’t have enough players available, however, there’s also online play for up to eight combatants.

No Caption Provided

Online multiplayer works well most of the time, but there are occasional moments where the action feels sluggish and unresponsive, as if Bomberman is trudging through mud. While this is a sporadic issue, it's noticeable enough that it begs for a fix. Thankfully, when matches run smoothly, playing online is still enormously enjoyable and competitive in both ranked and unranked matches.

Since each player only needs one Joy-Con to play, Super Bomberman R makes for a highly convenient two-player game. There’s a wide range of battle maps available right from the start, and eight different Bombermen (and Bomberwomen) are available. Points earned while playing can be used to buy even more characters and arenas, and you can even buy headgear to customize your little bomber.

There’s a surprising amount of variety in missions goals over the course of the story mode’s five uniquely themed planets.

Super Bomberman R also includes a story-based campaign that supports drop-in two-player co-op. More than 50 levels of bombing action are backed up by an amusingly goofy story of the Bomberman Bros. stopping the nefarious plot of the Evil Emperor Buggler and his dark bombers. There’s a surprising amount of variety in missions goals over the course of the story mode’s five uniquely themed planets.

While the majority of levels simply focus on destroying a certain number of enemies, other missions cleverly task your bomber with rescuing citizens, finding keys and switches, or surviving endless enemies for a certain period of time. Maps are frequently multilevel as well, which can heavily affect how bombs explode above or below. Bomb blasts can travel over ramps, for instance, but they won’t work across gaps or drops.

The last two levels of each planet revolve around boss battles. The first is a straight-up maze battle, where you must hit your foe with a single blast. The bosses are tricky, however, and seemingly always know the exact right spot to stay in to avoid blasts, so these sections can be surprisingly challenging. The second part of the battle takes place against a giant robotic version of boss in an open arena. The goal is always to use bombs to hit weak spots in order to stun the boss--and then inflict major damage to a central part of your foe.

The bosses, like the rest of the game, are colorful and well designed. Super Bomberman R is slightly modernized, done up in a distinctly retro 3D look. It’s charming, but it’s not overly impressive visually, though the sound effects and score (including J-pop vocal tracks) are a lot of fun. Putting a Bomberman game fully in 3D isn’t necessarily new, but the use of an isometric perspective instead of a top-down view does cause some issues.

The heart of the game--the battle mode--is a welcome retro rush, and decades since the franchise debuted, it’s still one of the best party games around.

At times, this perspective (and the active camera that goes with it) makes it hard to discern gaps, blockers, and minor elevation changes on a map, which can be frustrating when trying to flee enemies or bomb blasts. Your little robot can frequently be obstructed by the huge bosses as well, resulting in instant deaths simply because a giant robot leg blocked your view.

In almost every respect, Super Bomberman R plays it safe with its tried-and-true formula. The story mode is short (less than two hours at most), but fun with some creative boss battles and plenty of nostalgic throwbacks. The heart of the game--the battle mode--is a welcome retro rush, and decades since the franchise debuted, it’s still one of the best party games around.

It's a fun game, but as others have stated it's overpriced.

As the story mode goes, it's not really anything to write home about, but is somewhat funny and entertaining, and the varied goals in each stage keeps things kind of refreshing. So far, each planet has focused on one of the bomber brothers in one way or another, as they get separated from the team and cause mayhem for White Bomber.

I have played Bomberman games in the past with much better and meatier solo modes. And while upping the difficulty to expert might provide some added challenge, it's still kind of boring compared to a massive and highly entertaining launch title like Zelda. I will say, I've died many times in the campaign, and while I'm about halfway through it, things are likely to get tougher since I no longer have enough coins to pay for additional lives. It might not be a bad idea for me to just clear my save data and restart altogether!

If I ever get to try out the Switch's online play anytime soon, I'm anxious to see what the online community is like for this game. Everyone else will probably be like ninja bomber assassins by the time I get to play them. : x

The biggest missed opportunity here was not having a "N64 Battle Mode" where the players are in a full 3D environment. That's my favorite battle mode.

I'm gonna get this game once it hits its "down to earth" price tag.

Not willing to pay 50-60$ for what looks like a glorified mobile game.

When it falls to ±20$ tho I might get it, kids will have fun with it, no doubt!

$50 for a 2 hour campaign that resembles far older titles is a bit steep, Konami.

@fibaglassmonkey: Bomberman isn't a "pretty good" party game. It's THE party game.

@fibaglassmonkey: You could always go spend $40 on 1-2 Switch. That's a gem right there.

I tried to play online... absolutely horrible. I'd press the bomb button at least three times and no response. Suddenly, I'm blown up by my own bomb that I never saw. Shame, because I was really hoping to spend a lot of time online with this one.

Your personal experience are your own but I've never had an issue playing online with Wii U nor on the 3DS for that matter.

@eliminatorpaige: Ok, might be a region thing then maybe? I don't think JPL has bad internet or is a liar..

Only recent Nintendo games I've had an awesome time with online is Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon. New Smash Bros. is similar to what JPL is talking about. It just plain doesn't work.

@eliminatorpaige: Yes, it may happen to be my experience, but when Konami themselves admit to server issues, then it's kind of a universal issue, even though I never tried to pass it off as such.

This is Konami trying to quickly make a quick buck off of the fact that the Switch library isn't very deep atm. LOL... I wouldn't buy this if it were $10 let alone $60

Some games like Tetris don't really need to change very much. It works, it's addicting, and most importantly nobody's still trying to charge you $50 for it. The same can be said for the classic Bomberman formula... except they're still trying to charge you $50 for it. I really hate to say it but I don't see much that justifies the price tag.

You wanna charge people that much money? You should do something closer to what the N64 Bomberman games were trying to do (only better). A 3D Bomberman game with tight controls, new moves, and structured levels like Super Mario 3D World would've worked. Pair that with a multiplayer component with bots & live players, maybe a few dozen challenges in the classic Bomberman formula, and you would've sold me for $50. That classic formula... unless you're selling it on its own for like $20 max, it should at this point be considered an extra game mode as part of a bigger game.

I will definitely wait until I see this thing for $20 or $30 on the shelves... which will actually happen unlike Nintendo games because Nintendo doesn't know what the **** a sale or a price drop is.

@jinzo9988: I hoped/thought being 2017 and this will be the same basic gameplay (which is fine) so for the nearly full price this game will be packed with content, like levels, tonnes of customization options for battle mode, stuff like that. The same old gameplay which I loved in the past would be fine, but this has less "stuff" than the one on the PS3 ages ago, and the coin system for buying new content, I don't like it.

@jinzo9988: I picked up the game myself but can't argue with that. I wanted a party game at launch and just wanted to support the return of Bomberman. I would totally be on board if they did another game like BM64 or Generations.

@Kusimeka: True its a bare bones version, p rob slapped together at the last minute.

The Xbox 360 version from a few years ago was 10x better.
