SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated Review - Expired Nostalgia

  • First Released Jun 23, 2020
    released
  • PS4

A nostalgia trip that nobody should pack their bags for.

Nearing the end of SpongeBob's journey under the sea, you're tasked with guiding a ball through a giant Rube Goldberg machine in Mermaid Man's Lair. Once you activate the machine you have to match the ball’s painstakingly slow speed while using SpongeBob's arsenal of bubble abilities to make sure it doesn’t fall over. It’s a simple task in concept, but trying to execute it is some of the most unfun and Sisyphean gameplay in recent memory. In one section of the puzzle, all you need to do is stand on a button, and that button opens a gate for you to bowl a bubble into so you can progress. The only problem is that during SpongeBob's wind-up animation for bowling, he walks forward. That means you fall off of the button, which closes the gate and prevents you from bowling the bubble where you intended, when you intended. These kinds of gameplay barricades are common, and force you to restart and face your demons again, and again, and again.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated is rarely amusing or challenging, and completing it is an entirely dry experience. It looks nice, and brings back fond memories of a classic cartoon through iconic set pieces and tight voice acting, but its uncomfortable and outdated mechanics make you feel frustratingly trapped and are ultimately outclassed by countless other modern and classic platformers.

Now Playing: SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated Review

SpongeBob is a show built on rapid-fire humour and good pacing, but this game misses that mark. The game is a remake of the 2003 cult classic 3D collect-a-thon platformer of the same name. There were three versions of the original: a 2D platformer, a 3D platformer, and one full of minigames. This version took me around 20 hours to play through the main story and get a bunch of bonus collectibles, and from the movement to the jokes, the whole thing feels slow, with none of the comedic timing that makes the show so beloved.

It starts off when Plankton accidentally creates an army of uncontrollable robots that you have to defeat as a rotation of familiar faces: SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star, and Sandy Cheeks. The main menu is a hub world where you can select stages based on notable SpongeBob locations like the Flying Dutchman's Graveyard, Jellyfish Fields, and Goo Lagoon. Your main objective is collecting Golden Spatulas. They're littered around the world and are used to unlock stages. You can also find Shiny Objects and Socks which can be spent to buy spatulas from Mr. Krabs or Patrick respectively.

Diving into the game is exciting at the beginning. The Greater Bikini Bottom Area is carefully re-imagined into a clean, revitalized style that’s popping with a new paint job. It looks glossy, but you have to wonder how necessary the whole visual update is when the original doesn’t even look bad. It’s got the same voice track as the original, with almost all of the voice actors from the show picking up their roles for the game, directing you around to various objectives and making short conversation. You can tell the voice actors are trying hard to carry the experience, but they can’t do that because they're only given a few canned lines that repeat over and over again outside of the cutscenes. In a sense, Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated functions as a SpongeBob museum, highlighting the environments that give life to the series. There’s a keen attention to detail in recreating the original's charm, which is done well, but this underwater world's allure falls flat without quality-of-life updates that consider how differently we play today.

After the first few areas, exploring quickly becomes a chore. Some spatulas are thrown at you for doing nothing, and others feel impossible to get due to bad camera angles and unexplained systems that you’re somehow expected to know. Luckily there are a ton of helpful existing forum posts and walkthroughs for the OG game that can guide you through the most annoying parts. But that lack of consideration given to the spatula’s locations is off-putting and causes the game to start dragging within the first few hours.

Movement is just as unpleasant. It’s a constant wrestling match with mechanics that are both restrictive and awkward to a point that they remove your focus from the current objective and makes you want to put the controller down. Moving platforms are slow, and you have to jump on them often. If you miss them you end up bored, sitting there, waiting for the platform again while looking at an idle animation for too long and listening to the same short music loop on repeat. Even if you like the Stephen Hillenburg bangers, this gets annoying fast. Once you ace a moving platform’s weird rhythms, it doesn't mean it's over. Sometimes there are robots placed right at the end of those sequences that are too large for your character to move around properly because of their lack of mobility. It just feels cruel. It feels like your only options are to have SpongeBob try to jump to a place out of bounds and get escorted back to the stage by the giant floating hand named "Hans," or fall to the start.

...this underwater world's allure falls flat without quality of life updates that consider how differently we play today.

There were multiple points in the game where I climbed up to the top of a high structure and a rogue robot knocked me all the way down into water. Ironically, none of the protagonists can swim, so I instantly died and respawned at a checkpoint. Having to start all over is truly deflating. I’m willing to learn how to excel with a game’s controls even if they're difficult to grasp at the start, but with Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, it isn’t a matter of understanding the controls and abilities--it's a case of the controls just not working well. It's fine for games to punish players for being bad, but this game just feels constantly punishing for no reason, and it doesn’t seem to notice it or acknowledge it. Sometimes there are different ways to get to golden spatulas, but the game also randomly blocks paths with invisible walls, rendering your attempt to get there useless and telling you that your solution isn’t right. Walking into those walls feels like a slap in the face just for thinking creatively.

The levels revolve around walking to recurring characters around the map, picking up tasks from them, fighting robots, and swapping between two characters to utilize their strengths and complete the area. The loop could be enjoyable, but you can’t run in this game. Or dodge. Or swap characters conveniently. It's grueling. You have to walk around slowly, fight almost every robot in your path (some areas are way too packed with enemies), and frequently move back and forth to Bus Stops that are out of the way 90% of the time for character swaps. The protagonists all have distinct play styles that grant you access to different parts of the maps--if SpongeBob can't jump there, then run over to a Bus Stop so you can swap characters to Sandy and Lasso Glide over. But if you die, good luck keeping your cool. Deaths can feel beyond unfair, restarting your progress to the point that you may end up looking into the dark depths of the loading screen abyss thinking, "Why? Why me?"

No Caption Provided

The fleeting fun I had during this game happened during the boss fights. They wake you up out of autopilot mode by transforming the game’s monotonous motions into something that demands your attention. Your colossal foes and the tricks up their sleeves cause you to start thinking about your movements carefully. The cutscenes before the start of the fights are genuinely funny, backed by an intense synth tune, and each battle is commentated live by a talking fish. These moments are a bright light in the game and make it feel alive, just for a moment. It’s a delight to have the game make you laugh at these points, because most of the other jokes in the game just don’t hit.

If you find you still have fond feelings about the original SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, you should watch a speedrun of it or find your old copy and dust off that PS2. This one isn't it. Remasters, ports, and remakes are nice because they make games more accessible to new audiences, and the ones that excel understand that some features from the game's era are antiquated and should be updated or removed. SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated flops like a fish out of water when it comes to this. It’s a game so focused on emulating and embellishing the original that it doesn’t know the parts of itself that are fun and the parts that aren't. It lost sight of the basic elements that make a collectible platformer enjoyable. This game doesn’t promote curious or keen gameplay, the movement isn't smooth, and gathering collectibles never feels rewarding. Ultimately, the game winds up being an unpleasant nostalgia trip that nobody should pack their bags for.

The Good

  • Strong voice acting performances from the original game still do a lot of heavy lifting
  • Entertaining boss fights that are funny and full of life

The Bad

  • Dull moment-to-moment gameplay
  • Stubborn controls that show their age
  • Collectibles are either too simple or too tedious, and they aren’t rewarding
  • Combat interactions can feel incredibly unfair, and death is unforgiving in the worst way

About the Author

Funké played SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated for around 20 hours total, which amounted to one full playthrough and scavenging for additional collectibles. PS4 code was provided by the publisher.

As someone who likes platformers and wanted a simple game after playing through the masterful RE4 Remake, I nabbed this game on sale for my Steam Deck for six bucks.

I was expecting a broken mess full of bugs and gameplay that was on the level of a Bubsy 3D or Earthworm Jim 3D.

Instead, I got a shiny little fun platformer. Feels like a 6-7 to me. It definitely doesn’t reach the heights of the 9-10 platformers out there, but it’s a decent game for what it is.

You are an idiot. 2/10 should be reserved for games that barely function and have almost no redeeming qualities. This is a joke of a review from a joke of a reviewer.

The Spongebob game is sooooooo much fun still! I will never trust these reviewers anymore telling me to think otherwise. And why? Because they can't tolerate shifting the camera controls? These people would give Anthem a 7/10. I'd never trust them.

If a game I reviewed and rated at 2/10 consistently gets around 8/10 from the public, I'd look for another thing to do for a living.

I honestly created this account simply for this comment, as this review is a joke. I think this is the worst negative review I have seen on this site. I no longer tend to use this site, but I heard about the review of this and that is now why I am writing to you. Let me break down this review, so we can all have a laugh.

It is said that the bubble bowl animation is too long to wind up, and causes you to move forward and miss the target

* There are multiple reasons why this misses the mark. 1. You can let off soon after starting the animation and throw early. 2. You could start further back when doing so. I really don't understand how this is hard, especially since my 5 year old was able to first try those platforms....

"SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated is rarely amusing or challenging, and completing it is an entirely dry experience."

* Reviewer states said above line, but complains throughout about difficulty of moves, knowing where to go, etc. This contradicts the rest of the review, and makes 0 sense.

It is said that most of the voice actors came back, but they did not have sufficient lines to make the game enjoyable. (I summarized the long winded portion of this)

* The voice actors did not "come back", as they were the previous audio files that were touched up for this game. They DID however release voice lines that were recorded for the original, but did not make the cut back then. This shows the lack of knowledge from the reviewer before spewing this. This could have been checked when the reviewer had to Google how to beat this game...

The next complaint is about character swapping not being convenient, and death being too penalizing for the experience

*Once again, this is a REMAKE so the first complaint of this is null, as they remained faithful to the original. Some levels are designed for certain characters, and if this was changed it would have broken the level layout. Also, Purple Lamp Studios actually added additional checkpoints to make this easy game even easier, thus voiding said second complaint.

Two Boss Fight Quotes to summarize: "They wake you up out of autopilot mode by transforming the game’s monotonous motions into something that demands your attention" & "It’s a delight to have the game make you laugh at these points, because most of the other jokes in the game just don’t hit."

* It was earlier complained that the game was difficult and penalizing, but now it is being stated that the game is so easy that they were in "autopilot". Nonsensical to say the least. It is then stated that most of the jokes fall flat, and it is clear that the reviewer did not watch the show for seasons 1-3, as this is what the jokes are based upon. The jokes during those seasons were "peak" Spongebob, and had buildup to the punchline, and were not simply slapstick.

The final portion that the reviewer includes is that if you enjoy the original, to not play/buy this game, and go dust off the original.

* The point of a remake is to not only introduce new players to an old game, but for the veteran players to relive the experience. Historically, Gamespot does a poor job of reviewing remakes, as they criticized Crash Bandicot Nsane Trilogy for being too hard and too faithful. This is the POINT of a remake is to be faithful.

All in all, it shows that this reviewer should not handle remakes OR collectible hunting games at all. Somehow, this reviewer states also that it took them 20 hours to beat the game, and that would be near impossible with the game being so easy. My first casual playthrough for the remake took 6 hours, and I was in no way speedrunning the game, nor have I speedrun the original or played it in some time. This review is the biggest joke of 2020, and I do not expect much from Gamespot as is, but even this is bad for them. I hope for this site, which I will still only visit if something absurd like this goes viral on the interwebs, has more tenured reviewers (not "journalists") or people that are able to use their "thinky think" publish reviews on the site. I do not wish poorly on the site or the reviewer, but reviews this terribly done will slowly be the demise of Gamespot.

**** For people that actually enjoy Spongebob and do not hate it like the person above, if you have a PC, get it on there. You'll thank me, as this game at 144 FPS is beautiful and it is surprisingly well optimized on that platform.

Wow a 2? Someone at the higher ranks should investigate this person and this review and his ability to properly review games. The content in his review look more like a 5+ type of score but somehow he end up with a 2. I gave the game a 7.9

I give this game a 8/10 for some consideration to the public, but a 9/10 for me for sheer fun & nostalgia! This review is BS!

Can it be better, sure, but I much rather have this awesome remaster than not!

Gamespot, you should honestly just consider retracting this review entirely. This review is hilariously tone-deaf and hints at a more systemic problem with reviewers (that being a lack of awareness or experience with non-AAA or indie "art" games). You're only further reinforcing the "game reviewers aren't gamers" belief and alienating your audience by publishing this tripe.

I actually made an account just to comment on how awful and ridiculous this review is. The game isn't 2/10 terrible, this """journalist""" is. There's a reason every user review for this game is overwhelmingly positive - because this is a good game. It's a faithful remake of a game everybody loved and the vast, vast majority of people who loved the original love this game too. I wont deny that some animations need to be ironed out and other minor changes but for a game to be 2/10 it has to genuinely be borderline unplayable.

Just because this reviewer has no motor functionality and/or has never touched a game before, does not mean the game is "dry" or that the humor is bad. 99% of the voice lines are literally from the original game. In fact, the original is so much more unpolished than this game due to its age that its almost painful. Look at any speedrun of this game and you'll see how many bugs there are under the hood.

The fact that he had to specifically reference the mermalair ball spatula is pathetic. That level was challenging for children 17 years ago and since the remake is faithful its supposed to be challenging now. "Waah waah bubble bowl makes me slide forward during windup!" So walk backwards more to compensate for the momentum you gain. "Waah! Bubble bowl makes me slide off the button!!! this is too hard!" If you had a working brain you'd understand that if it can make you slide OFF the button, then it can also make you slide ON to the button.

The fact that this review is still up and tarnishing this great game is beyond me. This should be revised immediately by someone with common sense.

This review is completely and utterly unfair. Why ANYONE would be willing to be classifying this game as "unplayable" is beyond me; I've loved this remake so far, and I only have access to the Switch version. I understand that this game has its problems, and I will not ignore them, but it's still a great game. A TWO OUT OF TEN is a completely unjustifiable score, and the reviewer should be ashamed of themselves.

Do review sites just pluck random dudes off the street for reviews for games that they aren't bribed to give high scores to?

This game is so easy, I breezed through it pretty quickly and I had a lot of fun along the way, there were some moments that felt relatively challenging but nothing that got frustrating or felt unfair. There's also little to no consequence for dying, so if you do it's not really a big deal. No idea what this guy is talking about. Even if you thought some of the combat felt frustrating or unfair, that sounds like more a 5 out of 10. A two out of 10 is insane, sounds like Funké was just having a bad day. The game isn't broken or unplayable by any means. Seeing only the extreme sides of a spectrum and ignoring any middle-ground is generally indicative of a personality disorder.

This is a disgraceful review in my opinion. It's not so much the criticism, as what one person enjoys, another person might hate, no, it's the offensive score he slapped on the end that is not backed up by the review.

I never played the original yet I have been enjoying playing the remastered version on Steam. This is not a difficult game by anyone but his standards, even the ball puzzle, mentioned by the reviewer as frustrating, took me three attempts and two were just learning how the puzzle worked, which is part of the fun if you ask me. I have played the game for about 10 hours and loved every minute of it as a fan of platform games.

Due to not having played the original, I don't have rose-tinted memories of playing the original to fall back on but so far this is easily a solid 6 or 7/10 in my book. It is perfectly playable, it's charming and it's also enjoyable to play even to someone who has never watched SpongeBob SquarePants.

Awarding 2/10 for this game is insulting to the developers. I can accept that the game might not be to the reviewer's taste but giving it a score that is basically reserved for the most dire, broken, bug-ridden rubbish is just grossly unfair. Even IGN were more reasonable with their review, giving it a mediocre score of 5.

I almost get the impression that this reviewer set out intentionally to hate this game, perhaps because he is not a fan of the genre but was given what he deems to be a kid's game to review. Maybe he just likes games that hold his hand all the time so he doesn't have to think? Whatever, I simply cannot understand how he can justify that score.

This review is unfair and opinionated. It seems like the reviewer rated it low because he dislikes older Spongebob and was frustrated at how the game actually challenged him.

If you're a long time fan of Spongebob, enjoyed the original game, or just like platformers, then this game is definitely worth playing. Ignore this ill-conceived review.

Mainstream game reviewers can't even beat a kids game to save their lives. The majority of complaints in this review come from insane levels of nitpicking. These problems don't affect normal players who have more than two brain cells and have developed fine motor skills. The game is a Spongebob tie in game made for kids, if you're seriously having problems while playing it then you shouldn't be reviewing games.

I played the hell out of this game on the Xbox 360 and the PS2. I don't understand this reviewer's opinion of this game at all. This new version for the PS4 plays great. It's as good if not a little better than the old game. If you loved the old Battle for Bikini Bottom, you'll love this version. I'm playing it now and having a blast.

This is an extremely bizarre review. Like, this guy knows it's a game for kids, right? He's supposed to review it as if a kid would be playing it.

What he's doing is the equivalent of calling Dora the Explorer horrible because it can't hold the attention of your average 40 year old.

My kid loves it and didn’t go on Twitter and personally attack people for disagreeing with his opinion. 3 yr old 1 Funky 0....

@theappraiser: You do realize he represents the company with that review towards this game, even if some other workers in gamespot would think otherwise about the game.

Yeah, I’m playing this game and this reviewer is crazy and extremely lacking in objectivity. Like I’m not saying it deserves a perfect score or that you have to like it, but no reputable source could seriously look at this product and give it a 2.

You should only give a game a 2.0 if it literally is so broken it's unplayable. I don't see that here.

don't trust this "review" at all... the game is as fun as it was before and better!!!!!

"reviewers" these days are just kids who don't know anything about REAL games.. they just want interactive movies.. that's what they mean with the phrase "how we play today".

The reviewer isn't a games journalist, he's a freelance entertainment journalist that reports on reality shows, makes sense he would give such a low score then

https://muckrack.com/funke-joseph/articles

Explains why clicking on his name takes you to a 404 page and why he can't figure out how to do basic movements in a video game

Anthem - 6

Crackdown 3 -5

GS is telling us that those games are better than a cult classic remake? How much has GS been drinking lately?

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: The game still doesn't deserve a two. GS is embarrassing themselves again.
