Shadow Of The Colossus Review: A Timeless Classic

  • First Released Oct 18, 2005

The new Colossus.

2005's Shadow of the Colossus was a revelation, a game whose gorgeous aesthetic and reserved tone were, at the time, undeniably distinct. Together with its unique take on boss encounters and a stirring soundtrack, those aspects made the game a defining title of the PlayStation 2 era. But it was also a game infamous for its technical issues: most notably, the ambitious design of the titular colossi meant the game would often suffer from a choppy, aggravating framerate.

A 2011 HD remaster for the PlayStation 3 alleviated these problems, but now, with 2018's Shadow of the Colossus for PlayStation 4, Bluepoint Games has completely rebuilt every aspect of the game's world while leaving the underlying structure and mechanics intact, a move which not only rejuvenates the game visually but uncategorically intensifies the utter majesty of this extraordinary experience.

Now Playing: Shadow Of The Colossus Video Review

Shadow of the Colossus takes place in an ancient world, where young warrior Wander and his horse Agro transport a deceased loved one to a forbidden, sealed land. With a mythical sword and an ordinary bow, Wander hopes to take advantage of a fable that suggests something in this isolated province has the means to bring back the dead. There, he encounters an omnipresent entity who compels him to destroy sixteen colossi scattered throughout the territory in order to enable his wish.

If you've already played a previous version of Shadow of the Colossus, you'll find that Bluepoint's rendition feels much the same, barring some minor differences in controller mapping, some subtle quality-of-life tweaks, and a new Easter egg. The locations of each colossus and the methods of defeating them remain the same, as do the locations of every white-tailed lizard and fruit collectible. The weight and movement physics of Wander and Agro feel unchanged, and New Game+ rewards are identical.

But the impact of the completely rebuilt world is transcendent. This is a world that is geographically as you remember, but one that still astounds you as if seeing it for the first time. Highly detailed environment modeling in tandem with impressive light and shadow simulation bring amazing life to the game's breathtaking biomes. Forests are densely packed with majestic tall trees and twisting foliage, dappled beautifully with soft rays of sunlight. Vast, arid deserts feel hauntingly desolate as you try and sight somber ruins through a wispy sandstorm. Even the simple sight of mountainous crags and cliff faces is impressive, with shadows acutely defining their rocky surfaces, making them pop ominously. Every time you crest a hill, emerge from a crevice, or change your perspective, the landscape will be a sight worthy of pause.

No Caption Provided

The increased fidelity of the reconstructed colossi is just as spectacular, and the mere sight of one in this version of the game is even more awe-inspiring than it is in your memory. Each foe--some small and nimble, the rest impossibly titanic and overbearing--is a terrifying beast of stone, fur, and leather. That fur is now noticeably more dense and luscious, and hanging onto it for dear life as your enemy tries to violently shake you off feels even more intense. These moments are enhanced by the detail of the distant environment that lies far beneath you when on top of a colossus, combined with motion effects that amplify the sense of danger at these dizzying heights. The first time I mounted a flying colossus in this version of the game, I could feel my chest wrench as I squeezed my controller to hold onto its wing for dear life while it soared, flapping wildly through the air. It was exhilarating.

Playing on a PS4 Pro offers you the ability to further enhance visual fidelity via high dynamic range color, as well as the choice between two different graphical options with different priorities. Cinematic mode enables 4K resolutions, as well as allowing for impressive downsampling (that is, scaling down a higher-resolution image) for 1080p displays at a targeted 30fps. Performance mode provides less impressive graphical quality but maintains a smoother frame rate targeting 60fps. In my experience, I preferred the crisper image offered in Cinematic mode--once you realise you can recognise the definition between each individual blade of grass, it's hard to let that go. However, the visual quality offered by both modes still enhances the experience of the game in ways previously mentioned, especially for those whose last memory of it was suffering through sub-30fps framerate issues on the original PS2 release.

The visual reconstruction doesn't detract from what makes Shadow of the Colossus great, and the game's holistic and understated direction still comes through strongly: its muted colors, cinematic camera angles, and stark absence of music while exploring the world still evoke a poignant tone of desolation and solitude. The world's large forsaken landscape doesn't feel bereft of things to do, because simply riding through it and enjoying at the majesty of the land, accompanied only by the sound of Agro's hooves scraping against the earth, is a meditative experience.

Fighting a colossus is still a grand, solemn, and tense challenge that is exhilarating to overcome. The impassioned orchestral soundtrack heightens the pressure of every maneuver: Deciphering a method of mounting your impossibly enormous enemy, clambering to reach their vulnerabilities as they try to fling you off, and driving your sword into their flesh. Every moment of a colossus battle is thrilling to execute and witness, whether you're doing it for the first time, or the fifteenth time in a post-game time trial.

While the passing of twelve years hasn't affected the overall quality of Shadow of the Colossus, there are two technical annoyances that persist and remind you of a bygone era. The third-person camera system does not clip through world objects, so it becomes erratic and troublesome to adjust when moving Wander through enclosed spaces, or near a solid object. Additionally, the game's unforgiving climbing system, which asks you to jump with the X button and grasp onto a ledge or surface with the R2 trigger, is occasionally temperamental in certain situations; there may be times when contact with a ledge may not correctly register even though you may have been holding R2 well in advance and correctly estimated the distance needed for your jump. However, both of these issues affect only a small amount of your time with the game and should not be considered a significant strike against the whole. In the case of the climbing system, it's a quirk that's easy to come to peace with because of how absolutely essential the mechanic is to creating the rousing pressure and suspense of colossus encounters.

No Caption Provided

Shadow of the Colossus is a tremendous journey, and one well worth taking and retaking. The visual overhaul is stunning, thoroughly enhancing every facet of Wander and Agro's excellent adventure. Galloping through the tranquil world is always breathtaking; felling a monumental colossus is always humbling. Shadow of the Colossus is a beautiful reconstruction of an already exceptional title. It continues to be a modern classic and is an extraordinary game that everyone must experience.

The Good

  • Stunning visual reconstruction that enhances the original experience
  • A beautiful world that is a treat to traverse
  • Fighting colossi is riveting to perform and spectacular to witness
  • Sensational cohesiveness of audiovisual design, narrative, and mechanics
  • Agro is the still best horse in video games

The Bad

  • Third-person camera is still erratic within enclosed spaces
  • Unforgiving grip system can sometimes be temperamental

About the Author

Edmond Tran still remembers the day he bought the PAL cardboard sleeve version of Shadow of the Colossus for PlayStation 2 over a decade ago. He cherishes it, and even kept the original shrink wrap because that's not a weird, obsessive thing to do at all. He patted Agro about 87 times in this remake with a copy provided by SCE.

Please just tell me... since you... uh... say in the title that the game is a TIMELESS CLASSIC....

WHY IN THE **** you gave it a 9/10?

This is why Gamespot makes no sense.

If it's a timeless classic, and you give it a 9/10 ---- you do not understand logic and qualification.

For anyone complaining about the controls: Yes. They can be infuriating, but it was a design choice. Not poor work done on the controls. Do you realize how incredibly easy this game would be if it had the common modern control feel? It would be a breeze and then you’d complain even more about the runtime of the game. It would go from a 3-4 hour game (I did it in about 3 hours, but I remembered what to do) to a 1-2 hour game. That’s assuming you know exactly where to go and how to take down each enemy. The controls are part of what make this game what it is. I’ll tell you what I tell people who complain about Dark Souls and Bloodborne being too hard. They made the right choice by not trying to appeal to the average casual gamer. Any decent gamer can get through this game and see it for how amazing it is.

@frosty988: i had no problem with the controls only a casual not used to the experience would complain about controls, (of course nowadays people complain about anything) my response was = get GOOD, not redneck git gud, but just get good, not as in arrogance, just GET good...practice, get used to its mechanics...its not bad...its not hard to grasp at all...the controls are fine to me, but i went in with plenty of experience for this game...not everyone will agree, no big deal.

For someone who played the original it must be a treat to play this. But for someone who never played SOTC this is a complete failure. The climbing is clumsy and buggy. try to do anything else then what was intended for the player to do as you try to figure out how to solve the puzzles and you are in for a world of pain and bugs. The Puzzles are meh. The story is not worth mentioning. There is so much padding in this game its pathetic. The world is empty. There are but 16 colossi/puzzle and that's it. It's a 2 hour game stretched to 6 hours and all of it feels bad and clumsy since all that was improved were the graphics. This is probably the most overrated game ever.

@deactivated-5c66a5fc40886:

I disagree.

I have played and beaten ONLY this version, and many times while playing I told myself how glad I was to have waited for such a beautiful presentation of the game.

I almost went to buy it after reading this article, then I read the short gameplay. Well i guess it is to wait for the used copy then or some of the best buy crazy sales days.

I played for the first time this game on PS4.

It is a joy for the eyes and the concept is wonderful, but the experience is ruined by a bad control system. The camera and the movement of the character are clumsy ... I still like the game but I was hoping in a more enjoyable adventure (some time it can be very frustrating)

Just played trough it on PS4. Never played the original or the Ps3 remake. But god damn this was refreshing. Stunning in every way.

Its atmosphere reminds me of Infinity Blade (iOS game for touch). The whole "Just you against a few foes" No side-mission or other side distractions.

It's really linear but well crafted that way. When games becomes art you are faced with several challenges. There is a lot of feeling, visual and compelling emotions attached to SotC. it knocked me of my chair...

Think i´ll get a 64" TV now...

@Sindroid:

The first underwater/above water colossus was the one that blew me away and made me realize I was playing a true classic.

When I grabbed its back and got pulled under water the first time and then back out... I was floored.

@Sindroid: Wowww i almost forgot about Infinity blade in iOS, they really look alike. i got my copy a week ago and my God this game is wonderful, i didn't play the PS2-PS3 versions and I'm so hooked. A lo of people are talking about how the world is empty and the controls are clumsy let me tell you what!! first of all i think it is how the original developer wanted the game to be, if you really payed attention to the game story, the land is inhabited only by those giant monsters no puzzle at all you only go and search for them and kill them, second the gameplay for sure is a little weird but they used the same gameplay as the original game only new assets, specially graphics, that's what makes this game a piece of art. Love it, imma play it again and hope i can platinum it.

Ok Guys!
Big fan of SotC here who lost the fight against "common sense" and bought this game for the 3rd time!! haha!!

I wanted to come here to make a point on the game from a NON PS4 PRO user.
Seeing all the reviews and most of the previews being released shown for PS4 PRO, comparing the "performance" and "Cinematic" modes and all, got me a little worried on how well (or bad) the game would run on an Old, Vanilla, PS4 which is almost 4 years old now!

Well I gotta say I am impressed and count this game as one more game that DOESN'T convince me to get a 4K gaming grade TV and a PS4 Pro!
It runs very very VERY well even on regular PS4.
I tought I'd feel an urge, a need for 4k/PS4 Pro some time sooner or later but Sony seems to refuse to "lowball" us and make us feel like we HAVE to upgrade to actually enjoy current gen games!
To me, 4k/PS4 Pro right now could be considered like "Icing on the cake" which despite being enjoyable just doesn't feel smart if you're a bit tight on money!

Of course it won't support HDR, there'll be a little more aliasing but it's barely noticeable unless you get very very finicky about it!
So, all in all, I just downed 2nd Colossi and I'm enjoying it!

As for the game and the "remaking", somehow, I think there was a greater difference comparing the blurry and choppy PS2 graphics to the PS3 remaster than this remake here...
I may be wrong tho, it's been a while since I didn't play the game but in my memory, it seems like the PS3 version was already looking pretty good.

This PS4 remake isn't as jawdropping as let's say some very MAJOR remakes like the 1st Resident Evil which the total remake made it look like a totally different game...
It's a considerable rehaul but when taking Resident Evil in comparison, it is a little weak and underachieving.

So, overall I'd give it a 8,5~9.0...
I wished they would've added some stuff since they sold us the idea that a "Remake" should be so much more than just a "Remaster".

No matter what, we want a Sequel to this or a game of the same genre!
In the meantime, I'll get back to it!

Enjoy!

My advice?

If you do have a video game store that still rent games near you, go ahead and rent it for a weekend.

2~3 days should be more than enough to play through it and you'll be glad you paid 5~10$ instead of 40$ for the "experience".

I can't really recommand a full 40$ purchase as it's about 6~10 hours top and that's if you're taking your time, enjoying the scenes and all.

I would recommand a purchase if you're the kind of player who likes to replay his classics every once in a while but if you're the kind of gaming mercenary that hops from one game to another non-stop and never care to replay past games, it would be too much money to be worth it!

I'm pretty sure most of those who'll buy this (I might) will do it relying on nostalgia.

@Random_Matt: It sold great. They weren’t trying to sell millions of copies. This is a game in the same bracket as the Dark Souls series. They didn’t dumb it down for the average casual gamer. They made a challenging game for the more adept gamers. Also, if you haven’t played through it, you just won’t understand what makes the game special. There is a story, and each Colossus is unique with completely different ways to bring them down. Not every game with big, open areas needs to have a bunch of side quests. You’re supposed to admire the scenery. The world is meant to sort of be another character and give you more of a sense of wonder about where this is and why it is how it is. Like I said though, some people just won’t get it, and that’s exactly what they were going for.

@Random_Matt: Those 16 colossi, each with their story, moves, looks, plus the whole beautifully crafted exploration elements, makes this one of the best gaming experiences ever. It's not leader in sales because it's not for everyone, call of duty will always outsell games like these... ;)

@iaruelas:

("little challenge")

If you only know how much Every one of the 16 are sooooo different and in some many cases so challenging/hard to bring down. This is the very game that led me to buying my first console a PS2-slim back in the day and SotC had already been out for years. I bought it again w/ Ico & SotC together on one PS3 disc tho not sure I'd buy it again for $40 for one thing I don't own a 4k TV just the Sony 1080p. This is one game of very few this gamer anyway will NEVER forget! Anyway have a great day.

Whohoa. That's what I call an overhaul. From a technical point of view they did a really through job.

After originally playing it on PS2, eons a go I took another ride with HD remake for PS3. The game played the same but the visual improvements were not so overwhelming, mainly due to the fact that they didn't do much apart from raising pixel resolution of the image. In fact, higher resolution might have made flaws of low-poly geometry and dated textures/shaders even more visible than in original version of the game.

But this just simply looks very good. I didn't plan on buying a PS4, though... Fat chance on getting this on PC, right? I think these guys work on exclusives only...
