MLB The Show 16 Review

  • First Released Mar 29, 2016
    released
  • PS4

Hitting ’em where they ain’t, one more time.

One of the most famous quotes in baseball history comes from Wee Willie Keeler. When asked about the secret to his success at the plate and what advice he might give others, the tiny right fielder replied simply: “I have already written a treatise and it reads like this: Keep your eye clear and hit ’em where they ain’t; that’s all.”

Which brings me to MLB The Show 16. Like Keeler, the latest addition to Sony’s long-running baseball game franchise is also one of the greatest of all time, once again making its spectacularly realistic simulation of the National Pastime seem awfully easy. Even though the series has been so good for so long that I’m always tempted to take it for granted, every spring I find that the game has been improved just enough over the previous edition that I can’t imagine going back to its predecessor. This year is no different. While the features list doesn’t contain any showstopping changes, the new MLB game has grabbed me yet again.

First up is the overhauled Road to the Show. This combination of franchise play and role-playing where you create a teen phenom and guide his progress from the minors to the majors is always where I spend most of my time, so I am happy to report that this mode has been substantially improved for 2016. Granted, the biggest change is the ability to finally play a full series in a row and upgrade skills in the player training screens without dropping to the main menu after every contest, but credit has to be given for speeding the game up so dramatically. Road to the Show is much more enjoyable now, especially with position players where you generally see only a handful of at-bats, on-base appearances, and fielding attempts each game. I was able to zip through months of play with my third-baseman alter ego in just a couple of sittings this year, something that was previously impossible due to constant menu interruptions and lengthy delays for loading and saving.

ShowTime has almost as much of an impact on Road to the Show gameplay. Basically, this is a control gimmick that works like a baseball-centric take on bullet time. Hold R2 when hitting, running the bases, or fielding, and everything slows down to give you more time to zone in. You can’t use this endlessly, as there is a meter keeping you somewhat honest here. But even still, this is a pretty blatant cheat that is hard to line up with the realistic nature of the rest of the game. I actually felt guilty when using ShowTime, although the abrupt transition to slo-mo actually tended to hurt me more than it helped. It made fielding attempts erratic and got in the way of the rhythm of at-bats. I still tried to use it on occasion when hitting in key moments, though. The cool factor of being able to slow down pitches to the point where I felt like this must have been how a guy like Willie Keeler saw the ball was an undeniable lure, especially in key moments with runners on base.

Perks are linked to special bonuses that can be used in Road to the Show games to buff abilities at the cost of portions of your ShowTime meter. Some are consumed instantly, others last for full games. You can use a perk to force a pitcher to throw nothing but fastballs in an at-bat, for instance, or to start every at-bat up 1-0, or even get the benefit of starting with a 2-0 count with the bases loaded. There seems to be a perk for just about every situation imaginable. You can even make an enemy runner try to steal.

I’m torn about both ShowTime and Perks. I like them for the added spice they provide, and can see the appeal of using them to liven up long seasons. ShowTime can be seen as a way of depicting the preternatural vision of great hitters (as noted above) and Perks can represent things like mind games getting into the head of opponents or a player’s reputation and a tough situation forcing favorable counts. Of course, the baseball purist in me finds all of this somewhat fraudulent. All I can say here is that you’re not forced to use either feature, and can safely ignore them if you want to keep things real.

Bowman Scout Day is another new Road to the Show feature. Here you show off for assembled scouts, going through various on-field drills to prove that you’re worthy of a high draft pick. The end result is a full scouting report just like the one provided to real wannabe big leaguers. It’s a little too much of an all-or-nothing exercise, especially given that you’re put on the spot without the benefit of, say, grinding it out in high school and college in advance. But it’s still a nice added touch that makes the subsequent draft feel like less of a crapshoot.

The other main area of MLB The Show that has been jazzed up for 2016 is Diamond Dynasty. It still seems awfully fussy to me, more of a store for player cards and attribute-boosting gear like special bats, gloves, and the like than a coherent sidebar to the main Road to the Show, franchise, and one-off match-up styles of play. There is a lot of content here now, like the ability to sign on with one of a handful of MLB star captains like Josh Donaldson for specific goals, the chance to fulfill missions, and even the option of buying classic stadiums like the Polo Grounds and Shibe Park.

As in previous entries in the franchise, though, there is a clear nudge toward micropayments in Diamond Dynasty. Many of the items on offer here cost more than you could earn via gameplay unless you quit your job and devoted your life to arcade baseball on a full-time basis. It’s also annoying that so much is locked out at the start of play. Of course, you never have to buy anything, but the tease is always there; wouldn’t it be easy to spend a few bucks in the real world and pick up a power-boosting Sam Bat or two?

Battle Royale, while attractive at first, seems like more of a stunt to have any lasting appeal.

Still, the addition of two new modes of play in Conquest and Battle Royale did pique my interest. Conquest is a fantastic single-player idea where you create a team of randomly assigned scrubs and try to take over the U.S.A. (plus Toronto, which floats off the map above the Great Lakes) by conquering territory from neighboring franchises and challenging other teams for some of their fanbase, all done via turn-based strategizing and three-inning games. Consider it baseball Risk. I can see Conquest becoming an addiction, too, as I got hooked on a “one more turn” cycle just playing the game for this review in an attempt to dominate the Midwest. Some more tips need to be provided for the various stages of play, however, as the game dumps you into the deep end at the start with little guidance for how to attack and defend your territories.

Battle Royale, while attractive at first, seems like more of a stunt to have any lasting appeal. It’s an online tournament that pits drafted teams of 25 players against each other. Prizes for multiple wins include packs of player cards and access to the best players in the game, including a roster of MLB legends. You only get one round free, though. Subsequent entries into the Battle Royale cost 1,500 stubs (the in-game currency), which again ties back into the whole storefront angle of Diamond Dynasty that turns me off. You can earn stubs pretty readily during play, but it’s still a deterrent that rewards those with tons of grinding time and those with a willingness to whip out a credit card. More casual players are something of an afterthought here. I experienced a bit of lag in each of the Battle Royale games that I played online, just enough to occasionally interfere with batting. It could be lived with, although any hitching in a baseball game can be a killer.

Slo-mo replays turn even routine double-play balls into things of beauty.
Slo-mo replays turn even routine double-play balls into things of beauty.

The game's presentation has been slightly improved across the board compared to MLB The Show 15 and it generally looks fantastic, under the sun or under the lights. Player models are the one exception, as they still run the range between photo-realistic likenesses and creepy caricatures. Too many players have dead doll eyes and spotty facial hair, especially the randomly created scrubs in the minors that you see during Road to the Show careers.

MLB 16 The Show improves in many ways it needed to, but don't expect it to feel like a totally new game. New features like ShowTime and Conquest, along with steady-if-unspectacular improvements to on-field action, animations, and visuals, make for subtly better game that fans of the franchise will appreciate. Once again, Sony makes it look easy by giving us yet another baseball simulation that not only hits ’em where they ain’t, it clears the fences completely on a regular basis.

The Good

  • Features a wide range of new options and incremental improvements
  • Overhauled Diamond Dynasty mode includes the fantastic new Conquest
  • Impressive visuals, with stellar lighting effects and detailed stadiums

The Bad

  • Perks can seem like cheats
  • Persistantly pushes microtransactions

So unless I'm missing something, there are some fundamental features still missing from the game. For example, why isn't there a caught stealing percentage for catchers? Why doesn't this play some role in how the gold gloves are chosen? What about a batting average for pinch hitters? I feel like these two stats are very basic and the game is still missing them. Also, there should be a way to create utility players. The All-Star Baseball video games of the 2000's had that option.

next year this game will be full on arcade baseball, showtime and perks lol next its going to be a perk that has you hitting a homer, just make contact lol crazy. I'm a fan but its getting crazy. the commentary is still ultra repetitive. every 3-2 count they say the same thing about how good my guy is because i get into 3-2 counts. same dialogue for plays over and over

This is the only sports game I buy every year but I always wait for a sale. Grabbed The Show 15 for under $20 only a few months after release last year and I'm hoping that happens again.

I don't see the perks as being cheats. When I use a hitting perk I strike out anyway, lol!

@veryusername: No, not at all. Did you actually bother to read the review? The graphics are WAY
better. Movement and flow with new coded animations are stellar. As a Show fan, I'm always very
skeptical about just paying for a new roster (COUGH - See Madden until this year). Show 16 rocks!

And yet, we just had this article....

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/mlb-the-show-16-facing-crippling-server-issues-rep/1100-6438648/

The game is having alot of problems, and it seems (as i said below), this may be the worst one yet. So, i don't know if the Review were cognizant of these issues, but we have to get the whole story.

@jagdedge124: As I wrote to another commentor below I haven't seen too many issues w/ the game again I'm no professional reviewer and I'm not saying you are wrong just ..I haven't seen the so-called server stability issues and performance issues (and of course the whole microtransaction thing isn't forced whatsoever more of a joke then anything) but...idk I'm enjoying it personally I rarely buy a sports title infact its been SO long that last time I played a real sports title that I owned was ..... lol....NBA Jam ? maybe a tad bit of Madden '00 ? lol I'm talking since I was in high school (late 90s, early 00's) 15-16 years since I've owned any 2K title or Madden or MLB related (for baseball I played Ken Griffey Jr Baseball lol) so naturally If in all these years I finally want a new sports title (for basketball/football/baseball) I would prob go with whats new...of course given that the titles do ok review wise (and I read a few reviews and overall metacritic scores to determine if I want the title) i made that choice with NBA 2K16 when the wikipedia page (official) said the game has sold very well, reviews have been high across the board almost a universal acclaim (despite some hitches w/ some of the issues) with that I bought the PS4 version...and have enjoyed it quite alot...but I dont own MLB The Show 16...have only played it very recently at a friends house for a few hours and have enjoyed the title as well...I can't speak of previous titles cause I haven't owned any in the last decade (I mainly play platformers +ARPGS+MMOs+action/adventure - basically anything rpg reguardless of subgenre (JRPG, arpg, etc) and platformers both 2D/3D being my favorite genres...sports and racing I generally stay far away from as I haven't watched a sports "event" other then superbowl every year, I can't tell you any of the players on any of the teams and what their stats are...when I was a kid...playing baseball (middle/high school) and collecting baseball cards and going to Baltimore Orioles games that was different..but as a kid we do things or enjoy things we don't as when we're adults I did paintball, basketball, baseball, football and video games as well since the late 80s when I was just a kid in his single-digits...videogames have remained (other then reading/literature) one of the few hobbies I still enjoy...I have only recently wanted to hop back into a few sports games particularily baseball + basketball (despite everyone around here being a football fanatic...seems like its nothing but football here in Maryland - IE the ravens ) but I just can't get into football as much as I've always enjoyed baseball as a kid...so I wanted / want a good baseball game (cause anything would be better or an upgrade vs the last baseball game I played nearly 17 years ago) lol most of the guys commenting on here are guys who play sports titles on the regular and buy year to year incremental update[d] games like these series...and theres nothing wrong with that but for someone like me coming just recently back into the circle so to speak I guess buying the newest version of this series/franchise would be the best bet ? cause I don't have any previous gen consoles...usually I sell (I don't have a need to collect) older systems when newer consoles/next gen comes out I do still have a X360, Wii U, PS4, PC (not very high end, just a ASUS all-in-one desktop i-5 processor, 8gigs ram, no dedicated video card) so while it can run minor stuff like Diablo 3 (and some of the other blizzard titles on lower settings) it's not running you know Dark Souls III on ultra settings or anything lol...its why I rarely play PC games...I prefer plug n play couch-lock console games (reguardless of the debate on how alot of console games don't run as well) I seem (either I'm easy to please and dont notice alot of the frame-rate hitches that alot of the console counterparts have OR just don't care) either way 99% of the titles I play are either on a handheld (new 3DS XL) or the 3 consoles I currently own ^ as listed above. I would like to think I don't do fanboyism I don't pick one platform over the other...cause I do have a tablet (samsung galaxy tab) a PC (as said asus all-in-one w/ speaker system) high speed internet + wi-fi like most of the world lol, 1 handheld a new 3DS xl (I don't include my phone, cause even though its a smartphone its a older model and I only use for unlimited text/unlimited minutes and occasionally GPS) I rarely use it for much else when on the road...I know this is a long-winded response and off-topic but point I'm making I guess I don't buy into the stereotype (of keeping up to date with things) especially games even though I enjoy games and I always have a title that I'm currently playing 99% of the time its never a sports title...I haven't really dived into sports games since what ? the 5th gen consoles ? N64, first PSX title etc mid 90s when I was just starting high school (1996-2000) I'm in my mid 30s now so...I've lost touch with whats what in sports title, I wouldn't even understand half of the options career modes, etc it would be all new to me...so I don't even know where to start. lol

I think I have a pretty decent understanding of how you guys review games, but I would love it if you would start saying what would make you give it a higher score.

The games that are consistent with the quality always tend to start getting 8's after awhile, even though there are no real problems. I understand how minor improvements aren't enough to push these games into the highest scores, but it would be interesting to know exactly what you're looking for to make a "perfect" game in your eyes.

All games wouldn't benefit from this extra "what we want from this series" section, but I think it would be perfect for games like MLB The Show, other sports and racing games and any other series that stay consistent with quality.

Great review BTW. I'm honestly just curious about this stuff.

@PS2fweak:

Well, personally for me, the only "perfect" sports game i've seen over more recent years, is probably NBA 2K11. I would think sports games are certainly a bit different than others.

You have to articulate, what indeed makes the game an absolute improvement over the prior year, and is a roster or other minor updates, worth purchasing what can be more or less the same game every year, with some minor tweaks.

For people who may be new to the series, they can still purchase older games of the same series, that may be the same, or even better for a cheaper price, so there has to be major innovation (and positive innovation) that would make the game better than the prior years.

That's really only a snippet of what i would consider, but as far as THIS game, as i cited above, there may be even crippling problems, that may make it even much worse than prior years, and so an 8 within itself may even be a gift.

I would say, that competition in the market makes for better games (i think The Show was at it's peak when 2K was competing, as was NHL and Madden back in the day), and when you have no relative competition, the games tend to either stay the same, or even get worse, be it nobody has another place to go in the market.

@stealthy1: Agreed. They even poke fun at it if you want to buy Stubs. It'll say something like, "Hey, if you want to buy them, we're not going to stop you."

As for their other negative about perks feeling like cheats. They're right... to a certain extent. But no one said you had to use them. Plus, it's only for Road To The Show which is OFFLINE only. People are free to do whatever they want, as long as they don't do it online and ruin it for others.

@goodgamesguy: Stadium and player graphics are top notch. Haven't made it to the MLB in RTTS but some of the AA and AAA scenery outside the stadiums is atrocious though, have you seen the water and the traffic on the bridge at Jacksonville? It looks like one of those scrolling duck shooting games at a carnival. I know its not that important but man...

Right, that's where the problems are. I don't know if they have the same problems on PS3, but i'm not taking a chance. I'd go to the shownation forums to find out more about them, but it's not looking good.

@jagdedge124: I already have the PS4 version runs fine for me I can't comment on the supposed "server stability" issues quoted above in other comments or the so-called issues on the PS3 (maybe its true I'm not arguing that) but personally if you have a PS4 (and enjoy a sports title from time to time) I'm enjoying NBA 2K16 + MLB 16 I like baseball and basketball (and football) but I dont want more then 1-2 sports titles and for someone like me who rarely buys sports games (hell last time I owned a sports title was NBA Jam LOLOL THAT long ago lol) so naturally why would I go back to a older title ? I have 2 friends who already have both NBA 2k16 and MLB 16 - and are enjoying it...but again to each their own no-ones right or wrong just saying you know I think so far what I've played (microtransactions ARE NOT forced + online aspects from what I've seen have been pretty solid and the gameplay and visuals are fairly good) I'm obviously not a professional reviewer but I know a good smooth running experience when I see one but you know maybe your right seeing something I'm missing ? good day.

I'm sorry, America, but, I'm not a fan of baseball. That said, this game impresses visually.

@sladakrobot: I love you. Video games are nothing. How does that make you feel?

@reduc_ab_: I laugh at these kind of comments, but I have to say if I were to edit these comments I would make 1 change. I would say love is nothing, video games are everything and are you hungry for dinner ?
