Devil's Third Review

Ivan the Terrible.

Devil's Third opens boldly with your hero--a Russian Vin Diesel lookalike called Ivan who is permanently topless and covered in Japanese tattoos--playing a drum solo in his cell in Guantanamo Bay while a riot ensues throughout the rest of the camp. Why has he been locked up in Gitmo? "TERRORISM", says his on-screen bio.

Despite this, he's apparently good friends with some guy in charge of the facility who sets him free to quell the riot. He does this by murdering everyone in sight with his fists, or a pipe, while occasionally getting attacked by swarms of vampire bats.

Devil's Third is an action game that combines elements of melee combat--as per director Itagaki's previous work on the critically-acclaimed post-reboot Ninja Gaiden franchise--and cover-based shooting from both third- and first-person perspectives.

Unfortunately, while the freedom and precision of movement in 2004’s Ninja Gaiden was wondrous, Devil’s Third's melee combat feels unresponsive and clunky by comparison. There’s none of the careful consideration of your use of space and movement, no moveset to learn inside-out to ensure you cut everyone down with breathtaking efficiency. Instead, Devil’s Third invites you to just wade in and mash the attack buttons until everyone is dead, with action occasionally punctuated by a comically violent execution animation. The ability to dodge and block incoming attacks is available, but seldom used due to most of the enemies offering no tells of their next move.

No Caption Provided

As you might expect from a man who runs around waging war with no shirt on, Ivan can't absorb a huge amount of punishment. Often it only takes one or two enemies to get the drop on you and it's do svidaniya, comrade. This isn't an issue in and of itself, of course--the likes of Dark Souls or God Hand succeed, and indeed thrived, by using a more vulnerable protagonist--but unfortunately it doesn't work so well when enemies are capable of literally dropping in out of thin air.

At times, you are punished because the game does not understand its own rules. While Ivan can snap to nearby cover with some degree of reliability, enemies will often land shots at him even when you'd swear blind that they shouldn't be able to. Worse still, you'll occasionally see enemies shooting at you through their cover, never mind your own, and the controls occasionally become unresponsive as if you're dealing with some kind of simulation of online lag.

Because Devil's Third throws both gun-toting and melee enemies at you at the same time, so much hinges on a seamless transition between the two combat styles, theoretically creating interesting situations where the player is constantly forced to adapt. In reality, there is a slight but absolutely crucial delay when switching between your gun and melee weapon, leading to poor Ivan getting repeatedly shot or stabbed while he fumbles around with the various instruments of death magically stuck to his entirely nude back. Indeed, you'll frequently find yourself trying to gun down sword-wielding foes, or sprint at someone with a hammer while he fills you with bullets, purely because it often feels like the delay when switching weapons is more likely to get you killed than using the wrong style of combat.

"Control issues, combined with Ivan's frailty, often make combat a joyless and frustrating experience."

While Devil's Third may raise a smile with its self-aware sense of humour, the control issues--combined with Ivan's frailty--often make combat a joyless and frustrating experience.

The game also tries to alter the pace occasionally, including one section where you have to use Ivan's infra-red sunglasses to detect anti-personnel mines. This section, though brief, is tedious in the extreme as it simply involves creeping through a warehouse at a snail's pace while shooting the occasional mine. Worse still, the mines are reintroduced with no warning at all after a few battles, implying that the player is expected to keep the sunglasses activated and patiently crawl through the rest of the level, just in case.

Devil's Third does offer some welcome respite with its inventive multiplayer modes. As well as shooting at each other or hitting each other with hammers, players can also find themselves herding brightly-coloured chickens or collecting fruit and hurling it into a giant blender. And yet, because of the control issues shared with the main campaign, it's difficult to envisage players taking the game seriously in the long term, despite the multiplayer modes' initial charm.

Click on the thumbnails below to view in full-screen.
Click on the thumbnails below to view in full-screen.

Worse still, as the multiplayer component of the game is being released for free on PC, the microtransactions and currency system of a free-to-play game are entirely present in the Wii U version. This allows players to buy their way to the more expensive weapons with real money if they so wish, which will surely infuriate players who are quite reasonably unwilling to do so.

Despite the occasional laughs and wonderfully weird multiplayer modes, Devil's Third is near-impossible to recommend. The numerous issues with the controls as well as crucial elements of the game's combat systems soon mount up to provide an experience that frustrates far more often than it entertains, resulting in a missed opportunity for what could've been a cult hit.

The Good

  • Occasionally funny, intentionally or otherwise
  • Comical and inventive multiplayer modes

The Bad

  • Clunky, frustrating action
  • Plenty of bugs--some funny, some infuriating
  • Free-to-play elements in a full-price game
  • Utterly laughable main character

The last time I saw such a poor rating was on Rise Of The Robots for my Nintendo N64. Now I am sure if you had the box and instructions and game. You could fetch a nice price on Ebay for that game from the 80's!

Gamespot, you gave this game a score of 3, and Big Rigs Racing a 1. That's a quality difference of exactly 2.

On the other hand, you gave Donkey Kong Country Returns on Wii an 8.5, and Tropical Freeze on Wii U a 6. That's a difference of exactly 2.5.

Are you saying that Devil's Third and Big Rigs are closer in quality than two games which are in the same series, by the same developers, and likely running on the same engine?

Its kind of pissing me off that this is still in the featured at the top of the Wii U section. You guys reviewed Super Mario Maker. It got a 9. Why not feature that? Or are you trying to kill Nintendo?

@electricocarinaYeah I agree, reviews been really weird towards Nintendo lately even if majority of the Wii U games are absolutely great. Think the closest I ever come to great gameplay on a playstation console for example is Southpark the stick of truth and that says a lot. And I also actually really enjoyed this game so really don't get what's up with the review and then I also played trough for example the last of us. For me this game should have deserved at least a 7. And yeah the only bad thing I can really say is that the game was a little linear, besides that it was really fun to play.

@timetraveler_x: I'm not judging this game yet just because i haven't played it yet, but It seems like if the console sucks its an excuse to give games they can make fun of in any way a bad review. And people who make fun of Nintendo for this are dumb asses. Nintendo didn't make this game itagaki did. Nintendo of America is only publishing it because people are demanding it. I don't make fun of PS4 because Order 1886 got bad reviews

Hey everyone, I just reviewed destiny and it sucked. Its no more then a rip off of halo and call of duty. maybe a little borderlands in there. It doesn't nothing new and has lots of issues that have been patched. I guess that game deserves a 10 since its really the god send of gaming. But devils turd is just an abomination to gaming that should not be played but anyone but the 10 reviewers on these lame internet sites who are all just fan boys of whatever games they like and too immature to be level headed enough to that they games they claim are just amazing, are all just as bland and crappy knock offs to someone else. After what has been 20 years of pc and fps gaming, im bored with that genre. So that means that all those games are 3/10 for me, so everyone stop playing uncharted 4 before it even comes out. its going to suck.

btw, I am going to buy devils turd day 1, just like I did watch dogs day 1, or human revolution. For the gamepad support. I don't expect it to be anything better then a ninja gaiden game. enjoyable with flaws.

I'm a little puzzled. Why is Gamespot reviewing Devil's Third when its not coming out until December 11? I didn't read the review yet, but it puzzles me that Gamespot would review it now when there is still another 2 and a half months til release and Valhalla could still test and refine Devil's Third.

Bought the game and don’t get the grade. It’s really fun, the graphics are great and the gameplay is solid. Actually watch the single player gameplay and you will probably agree with me. It’s like the game gets a bad grade just because the main character is Russian or something?

For example the Swedish Ign review gave the game 7. It’s just ridiculous have much shit this games get from the US reviewers. Even seen other pages giving this game 9 out of 10 stuff.

@dani_i89:Well Dani, let me guess. You're one of those dudes that own an Xbox or a playstation or something like that and consider that to be one of the greatest consoles in the world. And really haven't bought this game or even owns a Wii U for that mater either.

I personally owns both a Wii, Wii U, a playstation 3 and playstation 4 and consider each consoles good in it's own right but with completely different strengths and yeah I own alot of games on each console to. For example, I really like resident evil 5, 6, GTA 5, Catherine, Tomb Raider on the playstation 3 and 4. But yeah, the Wii U have som solid titles to, like Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, Huryle warriors, Splatoon and so on. They are not the same but great in their own right.
So yeah the Wii U kicks as and this game is actually pritty good, looks nice, have a nice feeling to it. And yeah it's not the dead serious type of game as Catherine or heavy rain is that just gives you mental issues if you play it for to long. Instead it's an easy going, hard boiled action game that's just perfect when you want to kickback and kick some as.

@timetraveler_x: Your first mistake was assuming i'm a dude who owns a different console and just hates on Nintendo. What I currently own makes no difference.

The fact is that I gamed religiously on Nintendo since the NES up until the 64 (my all time favourite console). Nintendo was just magic. The Gamecube was a bore fest, and after that Nintendo sold it's soul for a quick buck. Nintendo was known more for it's motion sensing controller by the masses (non-gamers) than by actual gamers. It's why WiiFit is one of the best selling games of all time. Nintendo found a way to appeal to the casuals, which Nintendo says is a good thing by "reaching out to more people". In doing that, they failed people like me, the hardcore Nintendo fanboy in me is long dead...the person who cared about gaming and not gimmicks. The fat iPad ripoff of a WiiU controller is no better.

I'm sorry, but the fact is that most Nintendo games have been dumbed down for the younger/casual generation. They can't release a game without making it all cutesy and fuzzy, and when they don't, its just plain uninteresting. Hyrule Warriors is a disgrace to the Zelda legacy and Splatoon is just....meh. Couple the bland games with the outdated hardware, there is simply no game that immerses and amazes players. As sad as it is to see Mr Iwata has passed away, I honestly believed he killed Nintendo. From a business perspective, I believe Nintendo is better off without him. Gaming has evolved and moved forward. Nintendo simply hasn't.

I take this as you haven't really owned a Nintendo console since snes. Infact, you probably got the first playstation and stuck with it. And yeah, Nintendo is not about stuffing in hardware in the console. But if you trully think Nintendo is about WiiFit then you're just a lost cause.
For me Nintendo is about two things:
* Giving you a different gaming experience from game to game witch they do really well.
* Producing games that make you happy.

@timetraveler_x: The dumbest thing people say about Nintendo is that "it makes you smile". Other modern games on other platforms not only make me smile, but they make me think, they make me wonder, they shock me and they amaze me. They can also make me smile, make me laugh and keep me in suspense (The Witcher 3 basically does all of these...you will NEVER see a game as well thought out an complex as that on Nintendo)

The 'smile' thing is just a nice way of saying it's a cutesy game that doesn't do much else other than remind you how cute the game is.

The 'fun' argument is also stupid. If games weren't fun, then we simply wouldn't play them. A lot of games (like CoD) are really bad examples of modern gaming, however there are many other modern games that do what they are designed to do and make the player feel what the game intends for them to feel. That, to me is how a I define 'fun'..by being immersed. Nintendo's definition of 'fun' is watching Mario jump on the baddies heads and listening to that funny 'POP!' sound.

@dani_i89:

Some of the games that keep it simple have been masterpieces by Nintendo. Such as Splatoon and Mario Kart 10.

Nintendo needs to step it up (I own all three consoles), but to say Nintendo is not doing "it" anymore would be wrong. They are still making great games.

@dani_i89: You're absolutely right. As the average gamer gets older, we seek not necessarily for more complex experiences, but for more engrossing, meaningful experiences than just the 'fun' or 'happy' aspect. Games nowadays have to be immersive. And also, A LOT of what we consider fun in a game nowadays has to be with a certain amount of stress and tension. And challenge. We have to feel challenged. We also want to be amazed by an unexpected turn in a game's narrative. Or a game has an atmosphere/art direction so consistent, that provides us acess to an strange, alien world. And sometimes games deal with moral choices or mature subjects(that range from ethical dillemas to other philosophical issues). All of this considered, it seems Nintendo keeps repeating the same old formula, that has become shallow, compared to others we had in the last decade(or more).

@dani_i89:Yeah, I agree that complex games are nice to, liked heavy rain for example as I said above. Tried the witcher but it didn't really fall into my taste, but yeah I have friends that like that one. But I still think you're saying stuff without having a clue what you're talking about.

Nintendo is fun for alot of reasons and also superior in other aspects and let me share some of my experiences bellow.

Guess one fun thing about them is that they make interactive stuff. Either if it's a console or a game. For example Super mario 3d land for the 3ds had a certain moment in the game where you actually had to shift between the 3d view and the 2d view to solve a problem. Zelda for the ds had moments where you actually had to blow out candles trough the microphone to solve a puzzle.
In zelda and Metroid for the Wii you could actually aim with the Wii mote. You could even jump off ledges and control how you fell just by tilting the wii mote in different direction.

Splatoon for the Wii U is about painting the map in you're color instead of just killing stuff. You can actually paint a trail on a wall, swim in the paint and in that way climb over it.

You have Project Zero 5 (survival horror game) that will be out in a Month or so where you will be moving around the gamepad to spot ghost that you can't see on the tv screen.

You have star fox zero that will be (for what I know) the first game ever to be played first person and third person at the same time.

You have Xenoblade Chronicles X that will be out by Chrismas that just looks asome (can't even put words on how much cool stuff the cramped into that game and how hyped I'm about that game).

I actually played Mass effect 3 on my Wii U gamepad lying in my bed last Winter, just preferred experience the game that way. It's this sort of diversity and great gameplay that makes the console and the games great. They have a mind for detail. You actually want to collect the collectibles (not just trophies and stuff). Or hey, how about this, you're not forced to have sing star installed on the console and you can actually move the incons whereever you want!
You don't have 740 addons with no clue what you want to get (dead or alive 5 for the playstation 4 actually have this). And each game doesn't come with 50 GB of forced downloadable patches that are just not optional.
And yeah the Wii U can play any of the classics you so loved as a child, in the tv or on the gamepad, you're choise!
And yeah you can actually get a Wii U and about 10 games for the same price as a playstation 4.
But yeah, a playstation or an xbox compliments the wii u in some ways and some games that are good. But yeah this is just my opinion as a happy owner of both system.
But you know what, I would still recommend getting a Wii U before you buy either of the other two consoles. But hey that's just me. ;)

I have a Wii U and Xbox One. I just have a Wii U because Mario is still there, otherwise I wouldn't. It's just impossible to see "great graphics" in a game like this, perhaps you could say it's beautiful.

Anyhow, this game seems to have a unique gameplay style. I cannot affirm whether or not this is good, but I am certain the game is kinda "original" (although a russian with japanese tattos does not convince me ^_^).

while i thought this game always looked bad, has graphics like a first year 360 or ps3 game maybe worse, im still holding faith for mario maker and if xenoblade is bad ill be crushed. Hell X was the reason i finally went out and bought a wiiu. While its been a good system i would be pissed if it was the only one i had not being able to play games like mgs5 and tw3 would suck. They shouldve never made the tablet controller and beefed up the wiiu a bit so at least they couldve got ports of the games coming out on one and ps4. And i wanna play mgs5 so bad but i really should wait on the pc version because my pc will run it so much better than the ps4(3770k at 4.7 and 2 780 classifieds) im just scared the pc port will end up like batman AK and have problems. So i think im going for the ps4 version just because i can play it sooner and it runs at 60fps anyway.
