The original BioShock is one of Tom's favorite games ever. He will most likely love any game that tells a fascinating story and uses the mechanics to build on those themes.

My love of the original BioShock is unwavering. Irrational's previous foray into a dystopian society explored the ways in which the foundation of civilization crumbles when everyone has only their own desires in mind. The powerful themes resonated throughout every inch of that modern-day masterpiece. Not only did plasmids add novelty to the combat, they furthered the ideas the game was centered around. Plasmids injected into your veins let you twist your body into an unrecognizable monster, and the enemies you fought against showed how debilitating overuse of these drugs could be. Important figures exemplified how various mindsets would function when the rules of decency were removed. Remember when you explored the blood-soaked hovel of J.S. Steinman, the plastic surgeon trying to carve beauty into unwilling patients now that morals had been absolved? Or when you gazed at the artist Sander Cohen's disturbing masterpieces? BioShock was a terrifying exploration of the manifestation of selfish desires left unchecked.

BioShock Infinite begins with a similarly intriguing premise. Jaded by the unclean, corrupt beasts that rule democratic lands, Zachary Comstock founds a city in the clouds free from the shackles that have been destroying the modern world. Columbia is a place of pure hatred. The elitist settlers believe they are the chosen ones, elevating themselves above the unwashed masses who dared to be a different race or have less money than the privileged few. The stage is set for a sobering exploration of how a segregationist's mentality is ultimately doomed. However, Infinite avoids taking a stance on the situation that it constructs, instead diverting its attention to a pair of characters who encompass tired stereotypes (merciless killer, gifted damsel) that have no relation to the thematic elements set up at the outset. With nothing of value worth exploring, Infinite quickly devolves into a mindless shooter buoyed only by its stunning artistic design.

Elizabeth never says no to a dance off.
Elizabeth never says no to a dance off.

Booker DeWitt is a guilt-stricken war veteran who readily massacres hundreds of individuals. Relating to the protagonist is nearly impossible, and not just because he's a terrible person whose hands are perpetually drenched in the blood of his enemies. Because Booker's words and actions so often conflict, it's hard to take him seriously. Why would we ever believe that he regrets killing Native Americans at Wounded Knee when he still willingly enters battle zones with murder on his mind? Infinite desperately tries to engender sympathy for Booker by giving him a troubling backstory, but it feels as empty as the rest of this adventure because his motivations are continually ignored to allow for another extended battle sequence. It hardly matters that he's on a rescue mission because there's so little investment in who he is. Instead of offering an emotionally complex individual as the star, Infinite instead introduces a female companion who desperately tries to give the game moral grounding.

Infinite quickly devolves into a mindless shooter buoyed only by its stunning artistic design.

Elizabeth is a bird in a cage, spending her days locked in a tower as she peruses the books that make up her most readily available companions. No average woman, she has extraordinary powers that allow her to open portals to other realms. A strong-willed woman who is well read with abilities that would make a superhero envious doesn't seem like a weak damsel, and yet Infinite trudges down the tired path of using women as prizes, so she's thrust into that role regardless. She's rescued by Booker early on in this adventure, and accompanies him as he mows down the armed citizenry of Columbia. Sadly, she's little more than an item dispersal system with a fancy dress. Elizabeth helpfully tosses ammunition and health when Booker gets low, and unlocks doors, but otherwise she serves as a bystander. She does offer one nice touch of humanity. When Booker kills enemies in particularly violent ways, she recoils in disgust, which is more character development than is found elsewhere.

Located where the sun touches the sky, Columbia is a gorgeous city in which every new location contains its own beautiful touches. Marvel at the intricate railway system connecting one floating section of town to another and appreciate the down-home sensibility of the quaint storefronts. Despite the disgusting people who live there, Columbia is a place where you want to spend your time, gazing at the myriad delights as you listen to the serene music that fills your heart with joy.

BioShock's Big Daddy's made sense in Rapture. These fools are just poor imitators.
BioShock's Big Daddy's made sense in Rapture. These fools are just poor imitators.

Treasure those quiet moments when you're allowed to soak in the stunning sights, because such respite is all too rare. Around every dazzling corner await gun-toting soldiers who are all too eager to make your life miserable. Infinite pushes unceasing waves of attackers your way to ensure little more than a minute passes without your trigger finger seeing action. Sadly, in the six years since BioShock introduced a fascinating world with mediocre shooting mechanics, Irrational has still not been able to inject the core action with the same appeal as the aesthetic wonders. The claustrophobic locations of BioShock's Rapture have been replaced by a sprawling cityscape in which enemies snipe you from across great distances, which transforms the personal conquests of BioShock into exhausting, pixel-hunt ordeals in which you're constantly being peppered by unseen heathens offscreen.

The chaotic endeavors are tiresome rather than thrilling because haphazard enemy placement urges you to sprint pell-mell across Columbia's skies. With no fluctuation in the rhythm of combat, these battles quickly lose what little appeal they offered. There's no deeper strategy necessary to dispatch the brain-dead foes who hunt you, so once you've succeeded in a few encounters, there are few surprises to keep you invested. With exhaustive numbers and thick skins, enemies long overstay their welcome, and there's not even interesting punishment to keep you fearful of death. Fall in battle, and you're resurrected right where you left off. This mechanic was introduced in BioShock and made things too easy back then, and it's even more baffling six years later that this punitive-free system is still being used. It's troubling that Infinite forces you to spend so much time engaged in these boring ordeals. As you fend off attackers for upwards of 20 minutes at a time, it becomes clear that these fights are terrible filler in a game bereft of meaningful content.

No Caption Provided

The standard assortment of guns Booker carries fail to enliven these excursions. However, vigors imbue you with crazy powers that complement your bullet-spewing antics. By tapping a button, Booker can unleash a murder of crows at enemies, or push them into the setting sun with a blast of water. Shocking enemies with an electrical bolt is certainly more interesting than peppering them with a pistol, but vigors have such little depth that they too grow stale before long. There's little reason to experiment with different powers, because once you have a projectile in your inventory, you can keeping using it until your hand grows tired. More troubling is how little thematic relevance vigors have. Their counterpart in BioShock is plasmids, and there's a reason plasmids exist in Rapture aside from diversifying the combat. But why would the citizens of Columbia, who consider themselves to be better than their peers, deign to infect their bodies with a foreign substance? It doesn't make any sense, and subsequently feels like it's stealing from BioShock without understanding why such powers resonated so deeply in the first place.

As you fend off attackers for upwards of 20 minutes at a time, it becomes clear that these fights are terrible filler in a game bereft of meaningful content.

And then there's the ending. Infinite's argument that an evil megalomaniac will always exist is an extremely cynical outlook. That history shows this is the case doesn't matter, because whether it's true or not isn't important. What is problematic is that Infinite, which desperately tries to avoid making an insightful statement on American exceptionalism or racism, doesn't lay the foundation for such a pronouncement to exist in the first place. Issuing this statement is merely a shallow way to link the universes of the BioShock games. Instead of exploring the inherent problems that would urge Comstock to found Columbia or Andrew Ryan to create Rapture, it takes the easy approach by stating the what without delving into the why. Contrast this late-game revelation with what transpired in BioShock. There, we realized that in a society built on objectivism, the protagonist doesn't even have free will. Such twists are satisfying only when the game builds on them throughout rather than just throwing them in at the end as Infinite does.

Infinite is a poorly conceived adventure that struggles to form a cohesive whole. By borrowing the core elements of BioShock but never working them properly into the narrative, the action is constantly at odds with the story. Infinite stands as one of the greatest disappointments in my gaming life because I know what Irrational is capable of and could only see the squandered potential of its latest foray. Infinite has a fascinating world, in both visual design and story premise, so it's a shame that its vision falters, shying away from exploring any potentially unsettling plot thread in favor of focusing on choppy action sequences that endlessly drag on. BioShock Infinite is an incoherent mess that fails in both its shooting and its story.

The Good

  • Gorgeous visual design
  • Amazing soundtrack

The Bad

  • Tedious, never-ending combat
  • Story refuses to explore difficult situations the premise presents
  • Mechanics clash with the narrative

A fanboy scorned may have been a more appropriate title. It seems Tom has focused on what Infinite isn't, in comparison the first two games, rather than what it is. It all smacks a little bit of a tantrum in the face of receiving something different and unexpected.

While it's interesting to read a different take and read the views of someone who evidently didn't enjoy the game, to score it as a 4/10 is quite incredible when almost all other professional games reviewers have scored this game as a 9/10 or more - just take a look at Metacritic.

@GlenPh These second-opinion reviews were always meant to be a more personal look at the staff's thoughts on the game being reviewed, as I understand it. Expecting these to be held to the same standards as the official reviews from GameSpot is missing the point of this entirely.

@c_rake @GlenPh If that's the case, then why is this 'other take' presented in exactly the same manner as the main review? There's a summary of pros and cons and an out-of-10 score. It's published to the main page of the website with the score given at front and centre in exactly the same way. By comparison your average user review is never given that kind of prominence. With that considered, I'd suggest that the review actually should be held to the same standard as any other 'official' review on the site.

@c_rake @GlenPh If that's the case then why do they replace the official reviews ? This is the review that pops up when you search for Bioshock Infinite.

@GlenPh Agreed. Tom's review comes off as nothing more than a temper tantrum over delusional expectations. I find it sad to see this coming from a would-be professional game critique. If you break the game down and compare it to the genre standards, it has an okay combat with it's own perks, a good and original story (compared to the medium, again), good character interaction, it's own art style that stands out. The combat is tedious if you suck at shooters and play the game on Hard. A 4/10 is just ridiculous.

generally i stand up for the reviewers on this site but in this case it's difficult to defend giving a review of a game, that's been out on consoles for months to a person who obviously doesn't like the game that he's obviously already played on the aforementioned console?

@RobDev I really don't understand your attitude that someone disliking a game disqualifies them from reviewing it. With that attitude there would never be bad reviews unless nobody at all liked a game, since the site would always ensure that someone who likes the game reviews it. Regarding your point that about this game having been out for a while already, the sub-heading the article states that it's a second look at the game. Personally I look at reviews more as editorials than as some kind of objective description. I enjoy reading an intelligent well written analysis of a game, which I think this article is. I also like it when sites have multiple people write articles about a game, especially when those people end up having different opinions of the game. I guess if you're just looking for a quick score telling you whether to buy a game or not, that could make things inconvenient since you might have to actually read the articles to make a decision.

Even though I think giving this game a 4 is a little too harsh, I actually agree with a lot of things that were said in this review.

I really don't like the combat in this game, it's standing between me and and the really interesting game and story that they created. It hurt the overall experience I had with the game. Only at the ending did I actually enjoy the gunfights.

I do agree that Rapture is way more interesting than Columbia, but I enjoyed walking around the city.

Regarding the characters , I agree in that , in some instances, their actions seemed unjustified, but I ended up liking them. I think there are some very interesting characters in that game, like the twins, for example.

I did, however, really like the story. I found it very interesting and I like the way the linked things up in the end.

His biggest mistake was expecting Infinite to be a carbon copy of the first two games. It's like, we already explored those themes, let's do something new, and this game did. I'm sorry his preconceptions overshadowed his enjoyment of this solid shooter.

WTF is this garbage? This game has already been reviewed. Post this crap somewhere else as not to clutter up the Reviews section.

Furthermore, what happened to the "REVIEWS" section?
1) I absolutely hate what GameSpot did to it and I am not browsing 636 pages to find what I am looking for.
2) Where is the "Browse All Games" link?
3) Did you dipsh*ts even realize that you can no longer right-click a review and open it in a new browser tab?
4) The game images are way too big

Revert back to the old style or make it user friendly.

@theGerman5113 I would hope that the new site works better for the staff and helps them to have an easier time updating. While I see nothing to get excited about over the new site when it comes to user features, as just about everything I've seen is done better on other sites, none of your complaints even make sense.

1: .....Have you considered searching for the name of your game like we all should have been doing in the past. The bottom game on the first page of the review page goes back about 2 1/2 weeks, that should make finding reviews pretty easy even if you are searching through that for some reason

2: :hovers over games, sees "view all games" link: Right there?

3: Really, that's pretty stupid. :goes and does it: NVM that isn't true.

4: For what? It goes back 2 1/2 weeks the page isn't that cluttered and I still don't know why you are searching for something specific on that.

Nothing he has said here is wrong. Its a terribly overrated game. Pretty much agree on all his points, especially about the ranged combat. Bioshock was so much more claustrophobic and you had to use an array of powers, instead of just the rifle in Infinite. Great review Tom.

The best thing about the reviews now is that the score, as well as the good and the bad, are on the bottom now. While scrolling down to get to the score the average user might accidentally read some of the words now to understand why the score is what it is.

@Legolas_Katarn Who cares about this review ? It's just made for "hey look I can give a 4 to a game, it's me, I need attention".

I don't care about the "number" but the opinions in this review are so bad that I cannot trust anymore this reviewer.

“it becomes clear that these fights are terrible filler in a game bereft of meaningful content.“ >>> Seriously ? I don't play shooters usually (since Dark Forces :D) but this game has such a great atmosphere/story/characters, it's really a good game and not like bad game that deserve a "4".

@Kevin-V @Sun-Tzu-GE then is he really the best person to be reviewing it? If the console version was already reviewed is the story in the Pc different? Why the need for a completely new review form a person who must have played the console version and gone in with a pre conceived mind set?

@RobDev Your point? Fucking lel, you don't have a point, the only point on the table right now is that different point of views are always good, you failed to refute this, as I predicted, so just stop man. And who cares if the review came out later? The previous site didn't allow for 2 reviews, this is probably more to show the new multiple review system than anything else. And you want everyone to review every games? Seriously? I can't tell if you're trolling me or if your brain just doesn't work properly.

And stop insisting you don't care when you clearly do, and making stuff up on the internet? Please, it's almost sad now.

@DepressiveMan @RobDev thanks for proving my point. I have zero interest in metacritic (what the **** difference does it make to me?) or even what score it got, you want 2 reviews fine. do them both at the same time. Not one 6 months later given to a hater of the game to cause controversy. I've never played the game. Why stop at two? why not let everyone review the game. I have no opinion on how good or bad it is but this is nothing more than a bait article. why bother to have an official review at all? Pathetic? sure, keep telling yourself that.

@RobDev hahahaha... Classic "You just don't understand", I fully understand that you think having more than one review is pointless, but you don't understand that that's retarded, having different opinions on one thing is always a good thing, because nobody agree 100%, you basically want games to be reviewed by only one person in the whole world, because who needs more than one review right? Tom and Kevin are 2 persons with different opinions, 2 reviews make sense.

The only reason you don't like that there is a new review is that you like the game and Tom gave it a 4, you literally mentioned Metacritic like you're scared that the metacritic score will go down, you're pathetic. And you can't say you don't care when you've been complaining for like an hour... I'm not the one who should be moving on.

So basically, your point is that 2 reviews is stupid, mine is that different point of views is always good, you can't refute that, so I win, good night.

@RobDev It's a new thing with the new site, they're now allowing more than one review for each game. I assume someone is going to be assigned to do the main review... Then if other reviewers on the site played the game and want to review it they can do it. I have no idea why you're so upset about it, more point of views is always good.

@Legolas_Katarn @RobDev @Kevin-V @Sun-Tzu-GE by giving this review to Tom it was GUARANTEED to be negative.

why do two reviews then, how many other games get 2 reviews? as you said, Kevin's done a review. The game is what, 15 hours long. no one can get a sense of the game without playing it for months? really?

@RobDev @Kevin-V @Sun-Tzu-GE It's not a review of the PC version it's just a review of the game. The review by Kevin was for both the PC and console version.

"they basically signed off on a scathing review before hand"

As opposed to what? Signing off on a review that would obviously be positive? Wasting the sites time by having someone who had never played the game play it and then write a review?

@Legolas_Katarn @RobDev @Kevin-V @Sun-Tzu-GE this is a completely different situation and you know it. He has played the game previously. there was no way he would review the PC version objectively. they knew this when they gave it to him. they basically signed off on a scathing review before hand and i can't really see any reason for that other than to cause controversy. In fact why do we even need an in depth PC review? is ANYTHING different in the game bar the graphics? is the story different? Is there extra content? it was a baiting review and usually they don't do that

@RobDev @Kevin-V @Sun-Tzu-GE Balance? He played the game like any other reviewer would and gave his opinion. If anything his opinion has more weight then most reviewers because he has had months to play the game and think over his opinion instead of having to quickly play and write a review to get it out by a deadline (not saying that Kevin didn't necessarily, but if they are going to do something like this for other games). Look at the new pokemon reviews, the current ones are all pretty much worthless, because they aren't even allowed to talk about a lot of what is in the game due to review embargoes.

@Legolas_Katarn @RobDev @Kevin-V @Sun-Tzu-GE there is literally no balance in giving a review to a person who's "been pretty vocal about how much he dislikes BioShock Infinite". then it's not a review, it's a rant. It's also pretty unprofessional.

@RobDev @Kevin-V @Sun-Tzu-GE Because people have different opinions and showing two very different opinions is better than two people just agreeing with each other. Why would a person who doesn't like something be wrong to review it? What kind of sense does that make? Now if he hated the entire genre and because of that would almost certainly hate the game and because he doesn't play other games in the genre has nothing to compare it to, that would make sense but game journalism is in a pretty sorry state if sites aren't letting people who don't like one specific game talk about it
