The original Resident Evil 2 is very much a beloved classic to many and is quite possibly the best game in the series (the first game gives it a run for its money) so naturally, with any kind of remake, there is gonna be a lot of scepticism with it. Thankfully and shockingly, We were delivered a fantastic remake that captures the feel of the original will giving it a modern look.
With stunning graphics, sharp gameplay and a dark atmosphere that keeps you locked in from start to finish, You truly can not help but be hooked by this game. It hits all the marks that it should have hit and then some so for that, I must give credit where credit is due. I truly appreciate the time and care that was put in by the developer to make this. This is a project that was clearly taken seriously and that's rare to see among remakes today. Sadly, It is not without its faults.
The Claire storyline leaves a lot to be desired to me. It was very much a tacked-on campaign that had you revisit a lot of the same places you already visited when playing as Leon and it wasn't until you were already halfway through before anything different happens. It felt forced to me and was very much a needless addition that simply didn't have to be there. I'd have rather they just expanded Leon's campaign a bit more than this.
I would also like to echo Gamespot's thoughts on the pacing issues and I fully agree with them. For the most part, You will go quite a while without any interactions, It's just simply exploring. The action is very much spread sporadically throughout the campaign and not evenly throughout as it should have been. I was also disappointed with how easy the boss fights were despite playing on normal difficulty. I felt like just random enemy encounters were more challenging than they were and it kind of disappointed me.
Overall: 8/10
Yes, there are some flaws but this Resident Evil 2 remake is still a great game and definitely a must-play game IMO. It captures the feel of what RE 2 was while giving it a modern look and that is exactly what makes it so good.
