First review ever written, spare me some slack, I am going to improve - with time.
In the beginning I though the game would be great judging by the awesome attacks, the open fields and all destruction, but somehow this was disappointing to me - even if this is something I really want games to have..
I cannot unfortunately tell you exactly why I feel the way I feel, but I can give some reasons to why I most likely feel this way. Let's start with the basics.
Story: The story is very one-sided. Find the bad guy and kill him - that's the story in short. But of course, if the game would be like that it would be over in a jiffy. So you have to follow the leads and go to many people. The game was better since Alex Mercer had forgotten his past so it was like a memory search, with with time revealed the the bad guy.
Gameplay: It's like a search and catch game - the moment you find something you have to catch it! That's pretty much what you do through out the game, except for when you fight bosses. This was actually disappointing because you did the same thing over and over again which made me feel like I just wanted to stop playing. There was no variety in the game and that, to me, a game really needs to have in order to prevent the game to seem the same no matter what you do.
But the good thing was that there were lots of side missions - events - to do just to kind of forget about the storyline and actually enjoy the massive roaming of the game. This was a great way to do something different for a change and to also gain some experience points to purchase new upgrades
Enemies/Monsters: There were two types of enemies in the game: the military and the infected. The military pretty much appeared when you either attacked them or broke in to their military base, but other than that they were easy to avoid or defeat.
The infected were more of a challenge depending on the type. There were the easily defeated types whilst there were the more challenging ones, but the only challenge was that the stronger one had more health points and took longer to defeat.
When it comes to bosses I can only remember two, and the hardest one was actually the first one which was disappointing in the end of the game. Everyone wants the last boss to be more challenging than the others, but for me it felt as if the game ended to quickly.
Skills: Alex Mercer can pretty much do anything, as long as he has the ability to do so. In order to get more skills and upgrades, experience points are needed. The main way to gather them are through the story based missions, but you can also gather them quickly by doing the events as I mentioned earlier. Other more fun ways are to attack military bases and defeating strike teams. But according to my the most fun way, while you actually get lots of experience points at the same time, was to randomly kill people on the street! Yes, I'm serious, you get experience points for every civilian you kill, and I you really want to home in those experience points kill a civilian whilst the military is watching you, that way the will start attacking you and eventually call in an strike team. It's win-win basically.
Overall I would recommend the game if you are someone who likes to walk around and cause destruction, because this is a game based on pretty much only doing destructive things. Which is why I would describe the game as "a lack of variation"
