Fascism

The amount of restriction that is placed on us by CNET on blogs and message boards is ridiculous, and dare I say, fascist.  Because I do not feel free to express myself without facing undue consequences, I will not be wasting any more time on this website.  So to anyone that is reading this, peace out.

The Stomps at 400 Bar - The Gig From Hell aka ROCK STAR TRAINING

So, my band headed out, 90 miles up to Minneapolis to play this gig which we THOUGHT was going to be halfway decent.  We were headlining at this place called the 400 Bar which had a pretty impressive past lineup and looked like a pretty sweet place according to their internet site.  Red Daughters were opening up, with a $5 cover charge at the door, and we got paid according to the proceeds.  Sounds like a good deal!  Well, we get there and sound check and all that good stuff, etc.  Red Daughters played at 9, kicked ass for about 40 minutes, then finished up.  Well, the only people that showed up the entire time were their friends, maybe 8 or 10 people, none of which were old enough to drink, and none of which paid the cover charge.  So, we get onstage and play our set, skipping about one-third of the songs because the place was so empty.  About 3/4 of the way through, Red Daughters + Entourage left, leaving 5 people in the bar: my gf Tina, Zach's friend Scott, the sound guy, a bartender, and a chick taking money at the door.  So, anyway, I guess nobody did their job with promotions, and it cost us about $60 to play that crap gig: gas, dinner, and we even had to buy our own drinks at the 400.

The road to success is long and hard, that's why we call it ROCK STAR TRAINING.

Peace to you all.

Album of the Week - 3.31 - Oasis - Be Here Now

After introducing Tina to Oasis with Definitely Maybe, we moved on to their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?  She said that it was good to hear an album that had a few songs that she already knew.  Those being "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" which were both big hits in the States during the mid-90s.  She also said that she likes where the band is heading, and seems to be improving.  Her favorite track was "Don't Look Back in Anger."

Album of the Week - 3.31.07 - Oasis - Be Here Now

Oasis' third album is a big departure from their earlier work.  Gone is the neat and tidy songwriting that made up the last two albums.  Many of the songs on Be Here Now are over six minutes, and there are NO songs under 4.  The highlight is the pinnacle of the album, "All Around the World" which is a brilliant and sprawling affair.  Overall, this album isn't as streamlined and poppy as its breakout predecessor, but it stretches and satisfies in ways that Morning Glory did not.

I finally gave her the CD a couple of days ago.  I've been busy, and lazy.  But pretty much just lazy.

When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts

Spike Lee's four-hour examination of the still-continuing tragedy that was Hurricane Katrina is a complete success.  In a series of interviews with actual victimes, Lee uses these four hours to examine pre-storm conditions, including information about the poorly-engineered levees, the "mandatory" evacuation of New Orleans, and the hours leading up to the storm itself.  Lee then moves on to examine conditions during the storm, including those for the people that stayed at home in New Orleans, and those for the people that took refuge at the Superdome.  Most of the rest of the documentary deals with the devastation that many New Orleans residents had to deal with, the political issues behind the submissive federal response to the situation, and the underlying racial tension that resulted.  That is, the "mandatory" evacuation did not provide for people that did not have the means to evacuate, a group of people who were predominantly black.  Subsequently, it was these people that were left to weather the chaos.  In addition, the levees that were breached during the storm were located nearest to the neighborhoods in which these people lived.  Many people believe that this is why it took so long for the federal government to respond, that these people were socially unimportant and therefore didn't warrant help until it was decided who would be paying for this help.

Overall, this film is a complete success, and gives the viewer a sense of what these people went through, both physically and emotionally.

10/10

Album of the Week - 3.24.07 - Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?

After listening to so much Radiohead, Tina thought that Oasis' Definitely Maybe was a good departure.  She said that it had more of a classic rock feel, simpler songs with simpler chords.  Good riffs, good melodies.  Overall, she liked the album.  Like many others, she also thought that the Gallagher brothers are twins, though they are not.  Okay, well, let's move on to the next Album of the Week.

3.24.07 - Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?

This is one of those 90s rock staples, an album that anyone that was into rock in the 90s probably had at some time.  There's hits like "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" but there's also a whole mess of great songs on this album.  Overall, this album is better than Oasis' debut, as they begin to discover the melodic and songwriting possibilities of the piano.  Noel sings a little, providing the band with another great dimension.

Well, hopefully, she'll like it!

Album of the Week - 3.17 - Oasis - Definitely Maybe

After 5 Radiohead albums, Tina is now officially a Radiohead fan.  She thought that the best one was OK Computer, with The Bends and Hail to the Thief trailing behind.  The other two, Kid A and Amnesiac were very good, but not as good as those other 3.  Hopefully when I go to see them again after they release the new album, she'll come with me.

Okay, it's time to move on from Radiohead to another one of my Brit favorites: Oasis.  Their first album, Definitely Maybe, is my pick for the week of March 17.

3.17 - Oasis -  Definitely Maybe

This debut is a little rougher than many of their other albums, but the songwriting on this album cannot be beaten.  The pop melodies are interesting and catchy, as are many of the guitar hooks.  Overall, this is a very successful debut!
