I kind of knew this was going to happen sooner or later since both the Mini NES and SNES were a success worldwide with a range of games all on one small console, even the Commodore 64 got a mini console as well, which had 64 games in on that small console a load more on the option to emulate as many games as you like, you can check out my review on My Review on the Commodore 64 Mini going back to my thoughts of the PlayStation did have me thinking about a few things when seeing the trailer and information on it.
The design of PlayStation Classic perfectly mirrors the original console, with the same logo, button layout and packaging, it is 45% smaller than 1994’s PlayStation. I do like the idea of it, welcoming the next generation of gamers who missed out in the 90's on playing some classics that were first released on the PlayStation. This console will come with an HDMI cable to connect to your TV complete with two wired controllers, plus a virtual memory card to save your adventures as you switch between titles.
With only 20 games goes make you wonder what titles will be included for the PlayStation already confirmed were Wild Arms, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, Jumping Flash and Final Fantasy VII. More games will be announced closer to the time it is very likely that games like Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, WipEout, Gran Turismo and Resident Evil will likely make the list since they were all bestsellers for that system. Here is where the problems start to come in for me one of them is the controllers because I was expecting an analog controller for the PlayStation Classic because I was expecting Ape Escape to appear in the library not only being the only game using just the analog controls it was also a classic for a platformer.
The price tag is £89.99 or $99.99 which seems like a fair price when thinking about it, more or less the same price you would pay for the original console or even the PS1 Mini that was released in 2000 for £20 new or used either at a retro shop or a gaming market along with another controller for £5 and adding a memory card are very cheap to get. The games, however the five that were mentioned FF VII comes to £12-£15, both Jumping Flash and Tekken 3 around £10 or more, Ridge Racer Type 4 around £4 and Wild Arms can easily be around £20 -£30 all new or used depending on the price you are willing to spend same goes to the other games that get added to the list. Try and think about this thought the next you visit a retro shop or a gaming market and compare the two from the PlayStation Classic and the original console including the games on top.
With a release for December 3rd makes me wonder if it will be a success or not depending on what other games are announced would say it's a little pointless since you can buy most of the digital games through the PSN Store and downloading them on either your PS3, PS Vita or PSP, not to mention that all PS1 games are compatible on both the PS2 and PS3 console as well if you have the PS1 discs. If it is a success worldwide it wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo announces a Nintendo 64 Mini and Sega announces a Dreamcast Mini.
