The only ever time I've Dead Space was that one on the Xperia Play which was installed in my old Android phone a few years ago. I had people telling me that it's a really good series, it wasn't until 2016 I finally got around to picking up the game for the PlayStation 3 for £5. It's also taken me this long to pick up the first game since it was first released in 2008, I had that many games to play through and I still do now but no time like the present when I played Dead Space.
Overall 2008 was a good year for games including Metal Gear Solid IV, Grand Theft Auto IV, The World Ends With You, Final Fantasy IV DS, LittleBigPlanet, Rock Band 2 and Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Dead Space was released on October 13th 2008 in North America and October 24th for UK/Europe on that same month and selling over 2 million copies after release. Dead Space got positive scores from an 8 and a 9/10 from both magazines and websites praising for its horror visuals and clever gameplay. The story is set in 2508 following an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who battles the Necromorphs, monstrous reanimated human corpses, aboard an interstellar mining ship, the USG Ishimura. The more you explored the Ishimura ship the more you found out what was going on and why is this happening.

Okay, yes I did feel that it felt like Resident Evil 4 but in space when I first played it, especially for its 3rd-person styled view gameplay using a heads-up display using L1 to aim and the R1 to fire. I do like the idea of your health meter on the back of Isaac's armour from bright blue to red telling you how much health you have left; there is also an air meter where you'll give you a number of minutes you have when breathing in actual space and using abilities like Stasis ability where you can slow down time for a number of minutes or using Kinesis module where you can lift heavy objects or throw them at your enemies. Some parts you'll have to solve certain puzzles in order to get past something or requiring a key item in order to press on, I really do like the abilities for using these.
You can also upgrade your weapons, armour, and abilities if you pick up a spare power node lying around on deck just find an Upgrade Bench to upgrade your equipment. You can also buy ammo and health from the nearest shop, but your main weapon in the game is the Plasma Cutter which uses a long-range energy blast on enemies, there's other weapons as well including Line Gun, Flamethrower, Pulse Rifle and Ripper. The more you upgrade your weapons the easier it will be to taking out enemies that may be lurking nearby.
Don't get me wrong, I think Dead Space is a fun game plus the fact that a horror game set in space hasn't been done on a next-gen console when it comes to both the PS3 and Xbox 360. It's a nice change from other horror settings where most places will be set in an abandon house, scary dream or in the middle of the woods, having a game set in space is a nice touch to have. For a game that was released in 2008 I was quite impressed how well detailed the graphics and visuals were from the haunting halls to the broken corridors, even the Necromorph enemies looked really well detailed with lost limbs and messed up looks. Plus loved the animation deaths when Isaac got killed by a random enemy where they could either rip hi in half or easily stabbed multiple times or losing his head from one slash attack. The voice acting is really well done to make it feel like a good horror movie but with a little mix of Resident Evil and Halo put together, plus the horror soundtrack makes a nice touch to making the atmosphere tense and frightening at the same time.
As for someone who hasn't played any of the Dead Space games like myself, I would recommend you checking out the first game if you haven't, you would be surprised how rewarding the game can be either on normal or hard mode which can take a few hours to finish. But the whole experience is one heck of a ride from start to finish, I would be surprised if the Dead Space Trilogy got the Remastered treatment on both the PS4 and Xbox One it wouldn't stop a studio out there that could easily pick up the Dead Space franchise from EA since Visceral Games were defunct nearly a year ago from trying if they did.
