On the pathetic nature of system wars.

Not so much the system wars forum here on GameSpot, but that's the inspiration for this post, as I've gotten a few of those threads on my feed for some reason. It amazes me how, even as console gaming enters its ninth generation, how little has changed.

The first console war that I, and I'm sure many people reading this, experienced was the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo (Though I'm sure many in the UK have their share of Amiga/ST and Spectrum/C64 memories as well). Not only were people making things up to justify their system, but they'd denigrate great games on other platforms. But that wasn't the worst of it. People would talk shit about the people who owned the systems, not just the systems themselves.

It seems that in the 20+ years since then, nothing has changed. Well, not NOTHING. The players have changed (Sony and Microsoft instead of Sega and Nintendo), the graphics have changed and the tech buzzwords are even more dizzying, but it's still fanboys making ad hominems, insulting the other "side" over non-issues, throwing insults over acquisitions and games, bragging about boxes that are a lot more similar than the Genesis and SNES were.

And a lot of the people doing it now were doing it back then, which is incredibly sad. How do you go through high school, college and the outside world and still hold onto these puerile instincts? Why do people, instead of enjoying the stuff they like and having fun, spend so much goddamn energy attacking others? Kids, I get, because kids (and teens) can be awful people, but adults? That confuses me to no end.

Funny enough, the people who seem the most level-headed are the ones who stuck with the older games instead, forming the retro community. Perhaps because of how accessible roms are and how out of the current conflict retro gamers are, but when you see their twitches and their vids, they seem so much more chill. Obviously, there are exceptions, but for the most part, it seems a lot more chill the older the games being played get.

Is there a point to this here rant? Dunno. If I had to make an end point, life's too short to be pissy over stupid shit like this is in the end. Instead of hate, fill your life with love, and enjoy what you enjoy. The box you picked won't really matter next gen, and it certainly won't matter on your death bed.

I agree. I’m not too familiar with this topic myself, and I’m not one to debate. But, I just think everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and that’s just the way it is. We all have personal tastes and can like and dislike what we want.

It will forever be the case.

That explains kids. How do you explain grown-ups?

@xantufrog: I’d much rather have a community here, even if the forums are dying, then on Facebook. We can think of it as some sort of small club. Works for me.

Yes System Wars can be very obnoxious. That’s why don’t tend to post there very often. But that’s ok that’s the type of sub catagory that it is.

I think Forums and Boards are still for the more interesting, detailed, passionate discussions. Dying as they are will gladly take one user interested in a subject than a thousand that just want to c&p some meme statement. We are here to enjoy chatting about games, with other people who like chatting about games, when it is no longer about that? why are we really here_

An interesting discussion is extremely rare and difficult to replicate on more popular gaming services such as stream chatrooms or video comment sections. More than not (almost) always hostile and/or transparent. And from my understanding most on System-Wars act more in the way of a stream, YT conversation.

And that's the difference, a lot don't want that long and interesting discussion, they just want to say "lol your piece of plastic is lame" and leave. And for me that's worse than having no conversation at all.

@uninspiredcup: It's more annoying then fun, it's like reality tv in that it's all fake and thus boring.

@RSM-HQ: I imagined the picture was added to make fun of the idiot shitting on Monster Hunter. Really, the only OTHER response that would be appropriate would be a facepalm.

@kadin_kai:No doubt there's a treasure trove to anyone looking to learn about the sort of vapid psychosis that seems to surround the gaming industry. Not sure what sort of data advertisers (outside the gaming industry) can use from the System Wars forum. I'd be surprised if these people had much else in the way of interests.

You do have a point about the religious fervor some of these people have. I wonder if this is how religions start, or if they get to that point over time...

@mrbojangles25:For humanity's sake, I hope more people are laughing at it than taking it serious... People's irrational devotion is out of whack.

But I don't really get it either. Whether they really mean it or they're just having a laugh - either way I don't really get it!

I'm generally having a laugh and I think most are, but there are people that actually take it serious and a.) get caught in the cross fire, and b.) can't let go once they get going.

@YukoAsho: Personally I find the system wars highly enjoyable. It makes hilarious reading, they’re like psychological profiles.

You can garner a lot of information from reading these posts. The best ones to read are the fanboys (fanatics) who treat their box of choice like a religion and defend their love for their box to the death.

Gamespot has this forum because they probably collect the metadata, sell it and also benefit from the advertising below.

The metadata is particularly valuable, it will indicate educational level, wealth & income, personality, interests and obviously political stance.

@YukoAsho: The picture is a gif, I used it, from Durarara. It's a flick to the forehead, used to display the other persons stupidity_

You are right as well Monster Hunter: World was the subject (perhaps I make too many MH threads); MH:W is a multiplatform game and is well received on all systems. Had many chats with people who play it on different systems and usually it's pretty friendly, and we have fun just talking about the game. . then people like that step in.

Blows my mind how some think going into a discussion.

@sippio: Only struggle here is not going into the sort of rants that would get me banned. God in Heaven, how are there people this empty? And yeah, that's what gets me. As I said, I expect it from kids. Adults? Presumably with families of their own now? That's amazing to me how people can act.

Lack of competition always screws things up. We NEED more than one system. Hell, you ask me, we could use some new blood to throw a monkey wrench into the machine and really make things crazy again. I don't know why, but I'd love to go back to the fourth and fifth generations, when there were TONS of consoles out there vying for our attention.

@RSM-HQ:That picture's real? Someone actually turned Monster Hunter into a system wars issue? Judging by the layout of that picture, this person's talking about World, which is not only developed and published by Capcom, but also on Xbox One and PC as well.

@uninspiredcup:You're... You're going to have to explain this to me. I don't see the fun in screeching and throwing poop at one another like the chimps at the local zoo.

@netracing:You ain't even wrong, most likely.

I struggle to not insult & belittle fanboys in most of my post involving a specific console..

*With comments like "This is surprising, i guess there's alot of Sony Employees,,stockHolders or relatives of."

It's esp cringe when you realize it's adults...

*I usually buy a game based whichever consoles has a opening at that moment..

**I like the comments that it would be awful if SOny didn't have Xbox competition..

Absolutely..

Look what Madden has been like since it got the exclusivity..

Madden had so much innovation in 2000-2007 or 2008 etc.

Then nothing.... I actually got a backwards PS3 so i could replay teh Old Madden & NHL titles..

Thanks To Ryan Moody youtube videos pointing out current Madden for being stale...

As a multi-platform gamer find myself coming here less and less for that reason. Even when making threads with nothing to do with platform bias, too many feel the need to dive right in and twist the conversation to that oversaturated/ beaten-to-death topic; classic- "mine is better than yours"

Its become too precarious on Gamespot. Not all (some here are fun to talk games) but far too many feel the need to hump a platform, while ****ing on everything else.

Not a fan of debating with people so transparent. It's always the same, goes nowhere, and isn't a interesting conversation in the slightest. Whether I use that platform or not isn't the problem, just makes for poor discussions.

If it stayed on System-Wars I wouldn't have a problem, however always finds a way to pop up here regardless_

I guess insecurity is a thing, yes, but still, do people like this even enjoy the games? Or is it all bout assuaging their ego?

I'm not sure system fanboys have enough going for them to have an ego about anything about themselves.

It all comes down to people needing to justify the choice they have made to spend their money. The majority of threads on here are full of hypocrisy and illogical thinking because it supports someones goal to ensure others know why they made the wrong decision.

I often wonder if it's actually a hobby for some people or whether they suffer a genuine problem with insecurity.

@Yams1980: And Sony would just charge $1000+ for their consoles, as the only alternatives would be PC or Nintendo.

@thereal25: That's not surprising, given how people in general have moved to the "social media" platforms (which are more toxic, but that's a discussion in and of itself), but my rant was not just about that forum. It just seems like the gaming audience, while older, is still stuck in those adolescent playground antics that people should have grown past. Do these people engage in every disagreement this way?

Would explain modern political discourse...
