My history of gaming

To start this blog, why not let you, the curious reader, in on my almost life long history as a gamer...

The first game i remember playing, while beeing baby-sitted by this guy, was Ping Pong. Can't remember the name of the mashine he had. Only that it had very big and ruff joysticks with no buttons.

Later he got Pac-man, which at that age was abit of a paronoid and stressing experince:shock:

Then later at the age of four, my father thought it would be a good idea to give me a Commador 128 with a tape recorder, diskstation and a box filled with random games... And yes that is a little odd. After all, what four year old danish kid knows enough english to operate this mashine. I sure didn't!... But luckly for me, it wasn't long before a friend of the familie, marked up the keys L O A D and R U N with colors, and than showed me the order of what to type. I learned to but in the tape/disk, press play and type 'load' and later 'run'. Oh yea! That was back in the days... (as i could mention 50 times more on this blog, so i wouldn't :))

The games i remember playing the most on the commador 128 was Elevator Action, Manic Mansion, and last but not least Skate or Die (mainly cus of the extremely cool soundtrack of the intro-screen). I could just put that game on and listen to that track for hours and not even touch the computer.

Still looking forward to some progressiv rock band remaking a version of it!

Then later, when i was old enough to go down to the diner (grillbar in danish) by myself i discovered the huge colorfull Arcademashine. There i remember spending savings after savings on Wonderboy in monsterland, which i believe was where i got my first taste for the RPG genre in a minimalistic version ofcourse.

Then one of my mates got a Nintendo Nes and Super Mario was the new hero in our eyes. Needless to say, i became a big fan of the Super Mario series. The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game was also one of my favorits. Later when i got my own Nintendo for xmas, i got to know The Legend of Zelda which i didn't pay much attention compaired to Mario. Maybe cus of the fact that i couldn't understand what the story was al about.

I have later discovered the quality of it and bought the limited edition of Legend of Zelda - The wind walker which came with the older storys of Zelda Ocarina of time. (for Gamecube)

The Super Nintendo with its Super VGA, made all us forget about everything els when first installed in my friends livingroom. The games we played mostly on that was Super Mario 3, F-zero and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Turtles in time.

That you could now have a savegame in Super Mario at a friends house, chanced the whole perspective. We were rather occupied when school was over to go home and play the next level... You could compair that to todays World of Warcraft kids. Apart from the fact that WOW has a tendency to become more like a lifes t y l e(if not the only lifes t y l e)... Understandable, i've been there myself for 2½ years ;)

The Amiga 500, which i later got to know when visiting my cousin, introduced me to games like Lotus, Dynablaster and Wings of Fury.

Wings of Fury was the literally bomb of those 3... To us, there was no better intertainment, then bombing screaming japanese soldiers to lifeless flying corpses. Unfortunatly my very morally focused aunt didn't share that excitement. She actually got the impression that something was wrong with us, just becourse we found it holarius, rather then horrible to

Hmm... Here is where I run into a big black whole in my memory. I know there must have been lots of more games for the Amiga... or...

... Ow, wait... I have forgotten all the Arcade halls i've been drawn to when traveling with my parents. The turist places in southern europe, was filled with em in the late 80's start 90's.

The first game names that comes to mind are: Mortal combat I/II, Street fighter I/II, Psychotic, Double Dragon I/II, Metal Slog I/II/III, Aliens II...

(I'll add what names i come up with as they come to mind later on)

As the PC suddently appeared at one of my friends house, so did the strategy games, such as Colonisation, Warlords I/II and later a little Civilization (Which didn't impress me much at the time).

Another funny PC game from that time, was the game Jones. The game where you take turns building up a career on this board of different places you can work/shop or live. No doubt in my mind that the The Sims has its root- in this game.

To be continued with ... 'the modern age of SVGA' on the PC and later the Voodoo Rightous 3D graficscard:shock:
