I was reading about catnip on Wikipedia, because I have a cat and was curious why catnip affects cats in the way it does. Reading the article, it said:
"Due to the fact that catnip promotes sweating when taken as a hot infusion, it was used for the treatment of nervousness, colds, influenza, and fevers during the Middle Ages. Catnip has also been alleged to aid with flatulence, diarrhea, colic, and other childhood diseases, as well as preventing miscarriages, premature births, and morning sickness. It is also sometimes used as an enema (Plants).
As herbal remedies, catnips are used as relaxants, nervines, sedatives, and as antispasmodics. They are used to alleviate symptoms such as insomnia, stress, menstrual cramps, and gut cramps. The effect is a very mild one.
A study conducted at Iowa State University suggests that pure nepetalactone, a constituent of the essential oil of Nepeta cataria, may be 10 times as effective at repelling mosquitos as the common repellant, DEET." - Wikipedia
I found that rather surprising, I had no idea! And living in Michigan, we get a lot of mosquitoes. I'll have to see if there's a way to turn catnip into a repellant. And if you're curious, apparently, catnip contains a chemical that is thought to mimic sex pherimones of cats. And that bigger members of the feline species, such as tigers, are especially sensitive to catnip. For some reason, I'd rather not be around a doped-up tiger. :P
