Resistance 2 then COD W@W

I tried to stay true and loyal, as RFOM was such a good game. I pre ordered and got Resistance 2. To start off the campaign game is fine and does a good job, but lets face it, lots of us play it online. Wow, up to 60 players, it must be great... no its not; if anything I'd say you dont notice numbers over 30, as it ends up being mini battles around the large maps. The weapons are much worse, you cannot define clear winners; the Carbine lacks accuracy, the Auger no longer packs a real punch. I challenged a friend to play on the original RFOM game, online, and as soon as we started playing, he said "yeh, you're right, its smoother and faster than Resistance 2".

Everyone is raving about the Co-op. Within a day I'd played all maps and scenarios; playing it beyond this becomes repetative. So all I can suggest is you rent it, or borrow it, or buy in a bargin bin and play the Campaign only.

So then I've gone and made the mistake of buying COd World at War. This time Im going to give campaign a real go and see it to the end, although it does seem hit and miss. The onlnie multiplayer was again the real making of COD4, but does not live up to the same levels in W at W.

Online uses the same mechanics, but the graphics are worse. In an attempt to make the game feel old, set in world war 2 days, they've made the picture dark and grainy. OH DEAR ME, the darker picture is terrible and like any otehr war game - COD4 was so bright and realistic; shiny guns glinting in the sun etc - but not in W at W. Everything blends into everything else.

To be fair the weapons are cool and somehow similar to COD4, but old school. So you can add bayonets, mini pods; but you've still got silencers. Instead of a helicopter, you've not got hound dogs - which can be shot. Its 85 percent of COD4 - so its good, but not well pollished.... COD4 is seriously well made.

Timesplitters 4 prefix (BioShock)

I've wisely bought BioShock for the PS3 and have been rewarded with a solid game that should entertain for a while. Yes thre are some minor flaws, but basically it looks good.

Straight away it looks and mostly feels like a Free Radical game and plays reasonably smoothly like Timesplitters. The graphics are slight humerous kiddy cartoon graphics that smell suspiciuosly like the haunted house level in Timesplitters Future P.

However the game isn't as funny as a Timesplitters game and nor does it have a wicked multiplayer (from what I see). What it does seem to have is a massive story mode. The story is somewhat interesting, but the guide (a guy on radio) is a bit of a faker; straight away Im wondering if we should trust him. We'll see. If I choose to save a Daughter, then let me fella (not spoiler - this is clearly mentioned in handbook).

The controls are a slight let down. Firstly I cannot see any way of customizing the layout and having /\ as jump (not x) is a joke. Secondly I do not like R2 as my fire button, even though it works well on Timesplitters - but TS seem to use the button more sensitively, whereas BioShock is hit and miss. During the comical shooting matches with a slayer, when they bound towards you, its very hard to kill them when you hit R2 and nothing happens, because you've not fully depressed the button properly (being a progressive button that R2 is).

In its favour it runs fairly smoothly, but so it should with graphics not better than Timesplitters; barely. And considering it eats up 100'sGB on your hard drive and a whopping 5gb per save slot. I had slowdown once, but restarted and all ok now.

I found it quirky that you can start off on Hard and yet lower down to Easy with a quick visit to the pause menu. Taking down the Big Daddies seems impossible on Hard, when you've picked up barely any ammo or health en route.

The special powers do hark back to Second Sight (anotehr FR title) and TS-FP with the Telekenesis power. It works very much the same and the grapihcs are similar, in that the vision becomes a whirlpool blurr in the centre of screen and debris comes flying at you. A realy copy. The powers are cool and simple to switch between, but there is barely any time to switch powers or weapons during shooting an enemy on Hard setting.

The game does seem large and there are a few levels. Better still that it asks that you go back through some levels to pick stuff up; yes badies have come back. It reminds me of Turok 2 on N64, and because of this the game seems even more huge. Its quite funny how you run through a level second time with great ease, compared to your first attempts.

All in all this seems to be the full story side of a Timesplitters game, without the humour (aww, shame); but doesn't give you multiplayer online etc. Im fixed for now, but still cant wait for Timesplitters 4 to arrive (assuming its the same team making it as Future Perfect).

PS3 games thus far - Assassins

Ok, the titles are adding up. First was Turok, which was ok, but not excellent and nothing like T2. Then I borrowed NFS underground - very poor game. Then I bought Resistance = very good, just shame graphics are average. Burnout I lent to mates because I cant stand it. My best buy so far has probably been GTA4 - its just so much fun, even if online can suck at times; its really only best played with mates - not randoms.

I recently bought Haze and still trying to set aside time to get into it. Each time I die, I cannot be botehred to wait for the reload, its just so slow. The story sucks. I've also got Assassins Creed, but have never been a fan of RPG, and cannot gwet into it; however I can see beyond the great graphics and can see its a very well made game with some interesting mechanics.

More importantly is that Im still playing Resistance and also well into COD4. COD4 is actually quite basic and very easy to play. Most people online seem to have gotten a 20 kill streak or more - telling you its really hit and miss.

Most important - I've pre-ordered Resistance 2.... see you online.

I still havn't fully figured out Resistance FOM. I've not completed story mode as online is too much fun. The story drags on a bit - the indoor levels/tunnels suck. And starting from the start because the enemy got a lucky hit really annoys me and I dont have the strength or patience to do it all over again. Im looking into the online stuff and wondering what else I can do online. I really must play the Objectives more.

Haze - waste of time

Gamespot are right again with the reviews. Haze is prety aweful for all the reasons GS state. Graphics are ok, gameplay is below par slightly, weapons are cool, sotry dfreadful; online is diabolical.

However Im borrowing COD4. I can see why it is so highly hyped, but also see some faults too. Its slightly glitchy, the environment can be sticky and worst of all is when a Host ends online play. Otherwise its a great modern day game. Graphics are a marginal improvement on past.

Resistance : FoM, started

Just borrowed Resistance Fall of Man, as everyone says its so good. You guys'll know I love my FPS games.

On face value it looks like any other War FPS; its got a bit of a slant on the theme, with this alien hybrid stuff, but in essense it could easily be a COD or somthing. Im hoping to get into the game more and hopefully report back some better news; but for now, here it goes:

GRAPHICS - are no better than any PS2 game, say COD2 etc, but it ust be said that the PS3 handles the maps really well with no hesitation; whoever made the mechanics of the game, have done reasonably well here. Not a first, this game harks back to the old eras and thus gives some of the movie shots in a grainy black and white film; cool effect. The undergrowth is the usual 2D, walkthrough stuff, and for me, this is fine (until someone comes up with better stuff; but not important).

The colours are bland, and somewhat dulls the game for me; I know its supposed to be old, but hey, they did have colour and sunlight in those days too, lol.

SOUND - nothing new here; perfectly solid.

GAMEPLAY - I could go on forever here, so lets try and just get my ideas down first, then order later... First off is the typical analogue joystick movements with the PS controller, and works well. Luckily you can assign the actions to whichever buttons you want in custom setup. Straight off I've moved the zoom button from R3 to L2. However, the problem will always be here for this game, in that zoom is an on/off switch, unlike many smooth shooters where zoom is progressive, depending how hard you press L2 - such as Turok etc. Also, it maybe due to using L2, the zoom is hard to toggle, and sometimes does not turn off quick enough, and thus you get shot while still looking out beyond.

There are the usual movements which should definately be here; jump and mele. Both actions adding to the fun. Now for the downfall, Gun Selection. Im really not happy with the method of holding down R2 and choosing my gun, it takes too long. And tapping the L2 is random and doesnt always work straight away.

STORY - let me complete the game first.

ONLINE - this is what I borrowed the game for. First off the community is large and therefore always somebody to play.

The Free For All multiplayer is great fun. You look for a game and it quickly takes you to one, where supposedly people are of similar standard - not in my expeience. The waiting screen is simple, allows you to view the otehr players Stats etc. There is a text chat box, but not massively used - a waste of time. On the downside, tehre is no countdown clock for how many minutes you've got to wait, but on the plus side, they never keep you waiting for long and a game starts within a minute; even if only 4 out of a possible 8 players have arrived.

There are a few good game modes; Free For All which is often a death match, to a set score, or last man standing (given 6 lives say). There are also team games; they're not self explanatory always, but follow and watch the other players and learn. There is simple Capture the Flag, but a couple otehr modes too. Not loads mind.

Now you can also play buddies in private games. I've also seen there is a CLAN list, where you join a clan. I've yet to see if you can join more than 1 clan. Also, not sure how clands work; maybe these are for private games only - not sure. Or does your clan make up a team to fight other clans???

One good reason to keep playing is to improve your scores and stats. These are recorded, for everyone to see. You gain a short list of medals for certain goals met in a game; say 3 kills in a row, or Headshot, or Melle. Not sure how it all works, but Im sure the higher the rank you are, the harder you are to shoot...

Will post more thoughts as they come...

How to replace my PS2 games...

Having owned some superb games for the PS2, its now time to consider which games I want for the PS3, using the PS2 games as a benchmark. The reason Im replacing, rather than adding to is for 2 reasons; 1) I've got the 40gb ps3. 2) I dont want the clutter.

1a. Timesplitters - it goes without saying I must replace this game. Therefore with Haze or TS4?

1b. Black, Medal of Honour, Rainbox Six - basically another FPS game, but modern/real warfare. Not hugely bothered about this, but then again, I do get bored of the sillyness of Timesplitters, so maybe: Haze, Resistance or COD4.

1c. Turok; a FPS with a twist. Ok, so have bought Turok PS3... its not as good as T2.

1d. STAR WARS Battlefront - how could I forget? Star Wars being its own special FPS, I must get the next one. Are the timesplitters developers making the next one with Lucas Arts???

2a. Need for Speed - a crazy car game is a must too. Have got Burnout and not enjoying it; its too arcade. Have borrowed and almost completed NFS Pro St... what next?

2b. GT3 and 4 - pahhh GT5 is the natural idea, but Im not interested anymore, GT4 was too complex.

2c. Colin Mcrae 4 - DIRT is the new one; people say its pants though. And I could never get into CM4.

3. GTA3 and Vice - totally loved these games, but got bored with San Andreas, too long winded, not relaxed enough. However, GTA4 is due for my birthday, so no decision or money needed there. GTA-IV.

4. ESPN NFL - totally love my sports games and used to reply upon EA to give me my fun, with Street NBA, to Soccer, to Snowboarding, but ESPN's NFL game is my most ever played game on the PS2. Therefore... where is ESPN NFL PS3 ???

5. Roleplay/Story - not sure what I want to replace. Could never get into 3rd person; be it Metal GS, or Splinter Cell.

6. Puzzle/platform - not sure I want to replace Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider, God of War, never play them anymore. So Assassin Creed just the same???

7. Guitar Hero. Cannot afford to replace those, so will place PS2 and guitar upstairs.

PS3 matters - do you shop?

Getting to grips with my ps3.

Only downside to the 40gb is the lack of backwards to ps2 games. PS2 is just more clutter. Be nice if we could upgrade the 40gb with this software, but i guess its America only (presume teh 80gb has the hardware already in)... PS3 Backwards

On a happier note, at least the hard drive can be improved, shame i just missed out on eBuyer offer of a 250gb Seagate drive for £60. Nevermind, without the net yet, Im not filling my 40gb quick.

Anyone here bother going to the Sony Online shop???

NFS Pro St

So whats the deal here? Is this anoteh game best played online?

Maybe these games are too similar. Or maybe the game is really good, so much so that a good driver can easily beat the competition. Who knows. But its fairly simple to zip through the levels. The idea behind the game is a bit lame; all this "lets play safe on a track and keep racing off the streets". I do like tracks and thier consistency though - so who am i to complain.

The graphics are no better than PS2 NFS games of recent. The game engine is smooth, but we're getting frame-freezing or slowdown in the middle of every race.

The tunes are fine; odd mix. The engines really change from car to car, or even after tuning. Sounds - enough said.

Gameplay is fiarly cool. Slightly arcade, not too real, but not stupidly arcade - well balanced. The cars definately get better with tuning. Setup is tricky and not made clear. Cars do suffer from damage, being on grass, etc; great.

car selection is decent for once; Porsche, Lambo, Chevy, Ford, Toyota, Nissan

paint shop is great, been the same on NFS for some years; slight improvemetns though.

Nice mixture of events.

Possibly greater scope with the onlnie option.

Turok PS3 review

Turok

Thoughts on Turok on PS3 to date.

Its hard not to compare this to previous instalments of the game on the N64 and PS2 and therefore having preconceived ideas of how the game should be. The PS2 Evolution just didn't cut the mustard compared to T2; so is the PS3 going to be any better? Going by the demo and videos you'd think this game is going to be great.

Unfortunately my initial impressions are low. Yes, okay, so the graphics are better than Evolution by a slim margin, but barely any better than the likes of Black. There are subtle improvements like more realistic movements and shiny sweaty skin moments, but that's about it. The in-game play is nothing like the videos and I'd say misleading.

The movements are nothing special and like many old PS2 games. You can pogo about with the jump button, there seems to be no effort in it. The slight improvement is diving to one side, like in an action movie. If you've played old PS2 games, then you'll be used to the fluid movement you can get, the graphics do not glitch or slow down - all is smooth. Speaking of which the aim control are the usual pin-point accurate system using the joy sticks.

Action movie - that's just how this game plays. Its linear and you're forced to follow a single path pretty much. So far I've not found any freedom to roam like there was in T2 Seeds of Evil. Every now and then when you reach a point, or made a kill or objective, the game takes over your control and cuts to a movie scene - fairly nice and grabs my attention. Gets annoying when you restart the level.

A continuation of the Movie theme is the killing action. When you make a kill with a particular action, where it prompts you to press R2 for example, it will go to a death-scene, where it will perform a predetermined kill. Yep, this gets boring after a while once you've seen the short list of sequences, slows the game down, and is too much like these games such as manhunt etc. Worse still is that to perform these actions, its better to do it undetected, stealth; however you can be in the position of wealding your knife and trying to maim a dinosaur, and slashing about tends to do nothing, until finally (after being bitten) the R2 prompt finally shows up, and you perform the death kill scene; there is a real lack of fun here. If you're going to have these 'Grab and kill' moves, it needs to be more fluid like the Teken fighting games.

Lack of atmospheric music lets this game down. Instead you're led by some brain-dead idiot partner. There is no sense of being alone, scared, or pulse running like there was in Seeds of Evil; movies often make good use of adrenaline pumping music to get you pumped up - this does it in tiny thimble girly amounts. More please!

The bad guys remind me of Killzone, with their goggle-eyes and let out a gurgling death cry when you make a headshot; not bad, not great.

The backdrops are cinematic and offer great jaw-dropping landscapes to admire. Its often frustrating not being able to jump up certain ledges for better view. That reminds me, there is a lack of decent hidden ledges like in old instalments. The grass that you walk through is good cover to a point, but is much like that found in the Kong game; a bit 2D.

Im off to paly this more and hope to find some better aspects - fingers crossed. Oh and if I complete this in under 10 hours of playing, as other reviews suggest, then its going to be a real waste of money. It seems today that too many games are relying on the online capabilities and deathmatch modes etc; not good for the internet-less people out there. Bigger longer levels might be a complaint later on.
