There's no winning with some people. If there are cover mechanics, people moan "oh just another cover shooter" and if they aren't there its "where are the cover mechanics?"

Waiting and seeing on this one but what seem to happen here is that they got a limited demo with only a few things unlocked as it would be at the beginning of the game and they wanted to see more. Doesn't mean much.

I had Batman Arkham Knight preordered on Steam and in a moment that I can only describe as a gut feeling, I canceled the preorder, got a refund, and got the game on PSN. Bullet Dodged.

Also, it's nice to see Captain Toad getting some recognition. It's a great game.

Evolve above AC Syndicate? Really? Evolve was one of my biggest disappointments of the year. There is so little depth, so little reason to keep playing. On the other side of that coin, AC Syndicate was a pleasant surprise and a return to form for a series that has been seriously poor since Brotherhood, outside of the outstanding Pirate game.

oh I love the salty tears all over these comments. Mmmm...so good. This is such a great day. So glad all these horrible people are so mad at Nintendo for absolutely the dumbest reason on earth: producing a great game they are all free to buy and play.

ROFL.

WiiU has the best console exclusives and it's not even remotely close.

I agree with the message of the video but I don't think Destiny's average review scores are a result of old gamers expecting an evolution in the games they play.

Destiny was never sold to us in that manner. Destiny was sold to us as a concoction of already known commodities. Elements from gamings most popular genres like FPS, MMOs, and RPG being fused together to offer a completely engrossing experience. Where the controversy lies with is how well these elements have been melted together and reformed into a coherent package.

For me, Destiny is a polished shooter, with fun mechanics that make for exciting action whether in PvP or PvE.

But, it's also a game that fails on several key points of its core make up, in particular, the MMO/RPG parts. The leveling is just barmy. After level 20 it turns into a mind numbing slog in the search for loot, which is pretty much down to good fortune during numerous raids. The end game content may be there in spades, but how many times do I have to play through it to progress my character and when I do progress my character is it actually a meaningful change? In my experience, I have to say absolutely not.

Which brings me to the next problem, the classes, races, and skill trees. The skills and ability upgrades don't change the way anyone plays regardless of class or race. Look at a game like Diablo 3 which is obviously an Co-Op action RPG. The skill set ups in that game let you create a character that plays a special way. I love to be a tank in Diablo 3. I load up my guy with heavy armor, powrful close range weapons, and area attacks, and draw the enemies in all around me to absorb and dish out punishment while my partners cast magic all over every baddie descending on me. But in Destiny, all 3 classes play the exact same way. Upgrading my melee attack or my special changes nothing about how I use those abilities, it just changes mundane things like their speed or their splash damage.

To top off the whole thing, the lore is paper thin, derivative, and uninteresting.

I don't think Destiny's controversial reception is an older gamers expecting evolution vs. new gamers expecting less type of thing. I think the dissatisfaction spreads pretty evenly across those groups. I think Destiny's problem is the perception is that the game is a shallow, repetitive MMO with very polished and fun gun play. It just depends on what each gamer values more. Those who are satisfied with fun gunplay and strong PvP will like it more than people who wanted a deeper MMO experience.

For me, Destiny feels like a game that was made by people who know exactly why gamers love FPS but have no idea why people love MMO/RPGs.

@dani_i89 I have to agree.

MMO's by there very nature are grindy and mind numbing and ultra repetitive. The notion that implemented that feature set into all games is some how going to improve things is really a bad direction for the industry.

While I agree it isn't a great game, I can say that taken for what it is and not what I wanted it to be, it's still a good game with a very good competitive multiplayer component. The rest feels like and totally haphazard way to implement simple campaign coop into a game. The loot feels meaningless as does the leveling.

I must note that this site gave Titanfall a 9. I have Titanfall and that is a game which doesn't even put of the pretense of a genuine campaign mode and whose lore is so totally generic it avoids being "abysmal" and goes straight to non-existent. Beyond that it feels like COD with big clompy robots and extremely limited game modes.

For the life of me, I don't know how Titanfall gets a 9 and Destiny gets a 6. Both games are probably in the 7 to 8 range. I much prefer my time with Destiny and I can see myself coming back to it to take part in the add on content and improvements. With Titanfall, all Respawn has done is strip game modes because the MP servers are so lowly populated.

Destiny feels like a victim of its own marketing. It promised and under-delivered in a lot of ways, but what is there is still worthwhile. It's the best MP shooter released this year imo by a decent margin.

If I were Ubisoft I would be relieved about the reaction to all this. The social justice warriors have shown their hand. All they want is for developers to make the female option available. That's it. Just make the character slightly shorter, make the waste narrower and add some boobs. Done. That is literally all they are asking for.

When Ubisoft tried to explain it would cost too much to animate a new female character they were of course attacked, but they were probably talking about giving that female character the appropriate posture, walking/running form, and cool unique fighting moves and free running abilities that would make sense. But nope. Those people that care so much about female representation have the bar set lower than Ubisoft gave them credit for. Ubisoft probably assumed it would be better to just not do it than just slap some boobs on male character and call it a day because that would disrespectful, but it seems the people who claim to care so much only use this issue as a toy, something to be played with when they want attention before they go off and buy the game from the company they claim to loath because all of this meant SO MUCH to them.
