The Current State of Gaming: An Opinion

Recently I commented on the news of the new 160gig PS3 to be on sale in November. After reading some of the comments and having purchased an 80gig version myself, in some aspect I felt the same way. The comments of the fanboys and other early adopters was they felt cheated by the constant system changes made by Sony with no regaurds to the current base of recent customers by not giving discounts towards largers harddrives or maybe even a free online game. I have a PS3, owned a 360, 3 DS's, a PSP, and I have it all for one thing...the games. I am proud to be a gamer mostly because it is an inclusive community and not exclusive. Believe it or not, many feel the same way especially when their favorite pastime is threatened by others. (Think Jack Thompson) Back in 2000 I did a term paper in college for my english class about the growth of video games in the U.S. describing sales, core audience , future potential and its impact on the economy. I was proud ot hear, that despite a sagging U.S. economy, video games sales rose 43% in 2005 and as of 2007, for the first time had passed dvd sales making it a 14 billion dollar industry. Every console had its up and down sides. Microsoft rushed things with the Xbox 360 and it backfired, Wii is scredwed with its lack of online features (FRIENDCODES?!) and anyone who is a pc user hates to upgrade when you can't afford it in this economy, especially when games like Crysis comes out. The PS3 came out with a hard hitting price. Yet , regaurdless of the flaws, gamers know that early systems go through these bumps and continue to support them because of the great gaming experiences onto each system they've come to expect as well. The Wii has evolved outside of the gaming community alienating hardcore gamers (with the exception of some first party titles). But to its credit, has created a wider consciousness of what gaming can be elvated to given the right conditions. PS3 and 360 remain true to their core audience offering true next generation gaming while at the same time creating a more whole multi-media experience that others outside the gaming scene can also enjoy. Sales drive games, dedicated websites, stores and software companies that will keep pushing better games, thus giving we the gamers what we all want.
