Theres a difference between buying a new phone after a couple of years and buying a new console. For one your given the option to make small $20-$40 payments for that upgraded phone and its highly unlikely MS and sony are going to be selling their upgrades for under $400 or $500. Most average people are not going to be spending that much every year or two to play games. I'd rather buy a high end graphics card for my PC and be set for that 5 years or so, even at the end of that 5 years I'll still be playing the latest games just at low settings and they'd probably still look better than on the console.

omg I dont even care anymore. Its been such a long time and theres been so many great games that have come out since then. If valve wants to keep ignoring the HL gold mine then its their loss. There are plenty of other developers giving the gamers what they want .
