Collectormania - Manchester G-Mex!

Just returned from the Manchester G-Mex which hosted Collectormania this weekend! It was the first time I had been to anything like that and it was brilliant!

Some of the guests were - Miranda Otto (LOTR - Eowyn), Michael Dorn (ST:TNG-Worf), Robert Englund (Freddy Kreuger), The A Team (Excluding Mr T), and many others.

I had the pleasure of meeting Joe Flanigan (Stargate Atlantis - Colonel Sheppard) and he was lovely - so friendly and funny to everyone he met.

Can't wait for the next one - I'm hooked!

Spiderman 3.

Has anyone seen the trailer for Spiderman 3 yet? It looks brilliant.

Only criticism - why show it so early when its not being released until May 2007, that's just cruel!

Excited! Gained a degree.

Just received my results, I now have a degree and I am the first in my family to have one. :P

I have gained a degree in Media Studies.

Three years study but a lifetime of practice - watching TV and films! lol!

New Icons.

Just logged in after over a week away and noticed all these new icons in my profile. I'm liking them! Especially the medals and trophy ones. lol. Generally liking the site's new look.

Show banners.

How do you go about getting TV shows a picture banner? Or submitting any pictures etc at all? Do you have to reach a certain level or get so many points or reviews?

DVDs and scenes we could have seen.

Does anyone else think that DVDs should contain the full film or TV episode that was intended? The full, uncut piece that would-have-been had it not been too long or any of the other reasons they chop bits out? DVDs like the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy's Extended Editions are great. We get to watch the reasonable length version at the cinema and then watch the extra scenes on the extended DVD versions if we want to. However I later found that the wedding between Aragorn and Arwen that was filmed for the last installment was left out of even the Extended Edition. Why? That was the whole point of those DVDs and I'm sure that if you bought them it was because you were prepared and wanted to watch the film in its entirety. So why cut it out? Just keep it all in! The same with any film or TV series on DVD, why do the makers tell us about all these wonderful scenes that they loathed to cut out of the aired version then just leave them on the cutting room floor. In the DVD they should just add it in, just like they had first envisioned. Its such a waste if they don't use it. I'm sure that if we are fans or like the DVD we've bought then we're not really going to mind watching the extra footage. Can anyone think of examples where scenes were cut out from a film or TV show that you would have liked to see? One example- The scene in Xmen 2 where Cyclops fights the guards in the plastic prison was originally longer and he took out more guards.

The Legend of Zorro- a return to live action.

I recently watched the new Zorro film 'The legend of Zorro' the sequel to 'The Mask of Zorro.' Despite a lengthy gap between the two, it was well worth the wait. It been a while since there was a film out like it. Good, clean, fun and a non-reliance on CGI. Its refreshing in that it can still have explosive and entertaining action without being heavily into Computer Generated Imagery and use instead the basics of live action effects. Of course I love big budget films and not that I'm anti-CGI, because I love and appreciate how its done, but sometimes there's no substitute for the 'real' thing. If Zorro used CGI it was subtle and did not take our attention away from the plot. It blended in and enhanced the action already there. It was a great film and I really enjoyed it in every way. Please make a sequel!

Serenity, Joss Whedon the God and movie plea.

I just watched the film Serenity the other day and being a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel I had great expectations. Despite never seeing the show Firefly my friends and I were drawn into it by its humour and wit. The Captain (Nathan Fillon) asks Jayne (Adam Baldwin) rhetorically 'Do you want to run this ship?!' To which he says 'Yes!' Unexpectedly the Captain wimpering, childlike says not a command but- 'Well, you can't.' Its the unexpected that has become Joss Whedon's trademark along with his brilliant, intelligent dialogue. Just when you think they're all safe, the situation is turned on its head and you're back on the edge-of-your-seat. Whedon is a master of taking the expectations we have of a genre and twisting and moulding it into something new and exciting. Look at Buffy for example, he was sick of the helpless blonde girl in every horror film becoming the victim to some evil beast. Enter the kick-ass heroine of Buffy and the start of a cultural phenomenon. Did you know that Joss Whedon also wrote for 'Toy Story,' 'Speed' and had input in 'X-Men' (Wrote the line said by Storm 'What happens to a Toad when hit by lightening? The same as anything else.) I just want to say Joss Whedon we thank you for entertaining us all these years, and may you continue to do so. And if you happen to be reading this (Yeah right!) please give us a Buffy/Angel movie!! Oh go on!

Exams are easy?! Which ones have they sat?

Yep its that time of year again when the exam results come out. Well done to all of those that have taken some this year! As well as celebrations it is also the time for the same old argument to resurface 'are the exams getting easier?' You've probably seen similar sort of articles in the news etc they've been whining about it for weeks now. Whenever someone suggests that the kids are getting smarter it is laughed at and of course the answer has to be that the exam boards are making the exams easier. blah blah blah. What I want to know is if any of these people have actually sat any of the exams to see for themselves? I bet not. It is terribly annoying when students put in weeks of revision, have sleepless nights, constant stress and then when they get their results, people who haven't sat an exam for decades decides that the results are meaningless and exams are easy! Try sitting one!

TV shows that aren't on DVD!

I can't believe that some of our favourite TV shows have yet to be released onto DVD or even video. For example 'Third Watch' and 'Dalziel and Pascoe' and 'Malcolm in the Middle' etc. I'm from the UK so forgive me if they are released elsewhere, but there are probably loads more that seem to be taking forever to be released for our consumption or never will. Other shows seem to be released onto DVD as soon as its aired. Anybody that knows anything about how shows etc are released onto DVD just let me know. Thanks.
