On the morning of Monday June 11, I recieved a phone call from my sister, telling me she has some bad news. "I don't know if you heard the bad news, but Stack Bundles was killed this morning." It hit me like a ton of bricks. See, Stack Bundles was a local rapper from my hometown of Far Rockaway, Queens in the city of New York. A few years back, several friends and I had built a recording studio and opened its doors to nearly the entire neighborhood. Stack was one of the few we had taken a real liking to, not only cuz of his style, but he was very confident and energetic too. Anyhow, we took a demo of his to DJ Clue and he eventually signed a deal to Desert Storm Records (DJ Clue, Fabolous). J ust about all of Far Rockaway rallied behind him like a hero. He did a stint on Desert Storm for about 2 years but never released an album on that label. He stayed in the mix and eventually ended up on another New York hip-hop label, Dipset/Byrdgang. His buzz was now larger than ever and things looked very promising for his career.....Then comes the morning of June 11. He was shot once in the head and once in the neck right in front of his building in Redfern Projects. His credit cards, and cash were left on his person. The only thing taken was one of the two chain & pendants, so I realy think it wasn't a robbery gone bad.
A couple of weeks ago, my family organized a barbecue and invited a few friends to attend. My younger brother came to town from Maryland and bought a couple of friends. One friend, Julia, I hadn't seen in a few years. Julia was sporting a mohawk unlike any that I've seen and she looked great! I sparked a little cnversation with her to see what she'd been up to and the things she had to say were a bit disappointing. She said she'd been chilling, smoking and drinking. My immediate reply was "someone as young and beautiful as you needs to invest her time in better things than just smoking snd drinking". The remainder of the evening was cool, everyone having a good time and enjoying the food. Earlier this week, I received a phone call from my older brother saying he had some bad news. "Do you remember the girl from the barbecue? Julia? She was killed last night!" It turns out that she liked to hang out with some drug dealing boyfriend she had. He was in debt to some other drug dealers who confronted them that night in the park. There was an altercation, and shots rang out. Julia was shot three times in the chest and her boyfriend four. He survived, but Julia was pronounced dead 30 minutes afterreachingthe hospital.
I don't know why summer time is this way. For those who are from and live in the "hood", its a sad reality to cope with. I remember the summer of 2000 was very similar to this one. My sister was stabbed while fighting some girl, my friend was shot in the arm and leg during a robbery, and a girl that lived a few blocks away was found hung in her new apartment by her own thong. Is this what we have to look forward to? Its always a tough one to swallow.....R.I.P.
