oh i forgot, when it turns off the light goes red as if it were off

I have had my playstation for about a year, and up until now things have been pretty smooth apart from the occaisional freeze. but recently when i turn it off via the front button or the controller it seems to just power down slightly but remain on, just without the fans running. Even after i turn it off at the back and back onto standby it makes an odd whirring sound? can anybody help?
