I'm very bored at the moment so I will try and make a list of my top 5 albums released last year. I own all of these on cd by the way.
5. Wodensthrone - Loss

Band's country: England
Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal
Lyrical themes: Nature, Ancient Britain, Heathenism
It really makes me happy to know that England has started to produce some really top quality black metal, with bands such as Winterfylleth, Fen, Oakenshield et cetera, and of course Wodensthrone. This album is focused on the ancient ways of heathen Britain before the christianization of Europe. Atmosphere is the main word here, and they create one hell of an atmosphere with their music. Recorded in Romania with Negura music (fans of Negura Bunget should be interested in this album). I recommend to anyone who is a fan of black metal with intense atmosphere. Here is a song from the album:
Heofungtid
4. Glittertind - Landkjenning

Band's country: Norway
Genre: Folk Metal
Lyrical themes: Nordic history
Since I am a bit of a history geek this band appeals to me greatly. Ok the lyrics are in norwegian, but it's the overall album that really appeals to me. The booklet that comes with the cd is stuffed with interesting facts and tales about norwegian history from the viking age, the music reflects that in a way that combines traditional norwegian folk melodies with metal. A couple of songs off the album:
Longships and Mead
Landkjenning
3. Wardruna - Runaljod Gap Var Ginnunga

Band's country: Norway
Genre: Ambient/Folk
Lyrical themes: Norse paganism, the runes.
This is a really amazing album, infact I cannot really describe how much I adore this album. The music is created outside, by rivers, in forests, all the sounds you hear have been taken from nature, and the memory of the old norse runemasters is forever with you once you listen to this. The instruments are all handmade, and the music has a very organic sound because of this. Passion, atmosphere, and something that will take you away to the deep forests of Norway. Wardruna is the creation of ex Gorgoroth drummer Einar Kvitrafn Selvik, and those familiar with Gorgoroth will recognise that Gaahl is also on vocal duties here. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes ambient music. I will post a few songs from the album:
Bjarkan
Laukr
Hagal
2. Nokturnal Mortum - The Voice Of Steel

Band's country: Ukraine
Genre: Pagan Metal
Lyrical themes: Slavic paganism/folklore.
This album was released at the very end of 2009, December 26th to be exact. I managed to locate the album on ebay, and have owned it for about 3 weeks. I have listened to it almost non stop :P This is one of those albums that is near perfect in my opinion. Here are a couple of songs from the album for your enjoyment:

1. Manegarm - Nattvasen

Band's country: Sweden
Genre: Viking/Black Metal
Lyrical themes: Heritage, Paganism, Viking history.
And my top album of 2009 is Manegarm's Nattvasen. I have been a big fan of this band for quite a while now, and this album came just at the right time. Released in November, this continues Manegarms strong run of form, and they are in my opinion one of the best metal bands around at the moment. Listen for yourself:
Vetrarmegin
Nattvasen
Delling
