SiteBeat! Vol. 3: GameSpot Site Blog Modules

Hey all, sorry for the extended hiatus. Was pretty busy with the SportsGamer redesign and have been involved in more sys-admin work recently.

So, by now you're probably aware that the GameSpot Site Blogs are live. Radness!

I whipped up a couple modules that will likely be your main gateway into GS blog land.

There are 2 versions of the module, a) link only and b) thumb + blurb, see both below.

siteblogs_small

siteblogs_large

These modules will show up in various places (frontdoor, features hub, sports hub, blog hubs, etc.) around the site and in forms respective to their locations (ie. you won't see a link to Spam Filter on the actual Spam Filter blog hub).

In related news, we're hoping to get RSS feeds for the blogs set up soon.

Thanks to K for the back-end work.

404 emblem: R.I.P.

Once a dubious honor (more like a virtual spanking, really) the GS 404 emblem has been retired. Queue trumpets!

The days of publically shaming those who push bad code are behind us now. Evil site outages are to be the work of anonymous persons/unexplained events/mystical gnomes. Welcome to the future, from here on out its all 9s.

SiteBeat! Vol. 1 (a posthumous affair)

I mentioned in SiteBeat! Vol. 2 I would be writing about an earlier site enhancement project I worked on. As I recall this one generated a bit of criticism but was eventually accepted. (yay!) Without further ado, I present unto you (posthumously), the new tabbed profile info module!

Another team croy/lam/oguro (Team CLO?) effort, this bad boy sports fun javascript/ajax calls for user stats, and a cleaner, modualized design to make room for more tasty goodness on the user hub.

I would have taken a screen shot of my stats tab, which I built using a simple table, but my stats are shamefully low. So you get to look at my measly emblem collection instead. ;)

I made this! (SiteBeat Vol. 2)

So here is what I broke the site for:

Check the ticker! Now you can see what's going on around CNET's other properties. Notice the background theme selector (light/dark) now only shows up in the userpanel and only when one is logged out. If logged in, you now have to head to your prefs panel to change the theme.

Special thanks goes to coguro for the design and mr. lam for help with the backend.

As an aside, this CHOW.com video feature on espresso is fantastic, AND takes place at Blue Bottle Coffee Company, a cafe I adore. Best coffee in SF, hands down.

Note: In an effort to keep the masses informed of what's new and improved around GS (and the other CNE properties), I bring you SiteBeat! Vol. 1. There will be a posthumous report on a feature I worked on a while ago.

weak lung

I'm mostly better from my bout with bronchitis.

Still occasionally I'll find myself hacking up something undesirable and not worth mentioning here, but really, getting back to the get-down is good.

Weak lung no more.

!$mac {sickmac == emomac}

It would be no exaggeration to claim that I've been sick for the entire 4+ months I have lived in San Francisco.

Since moving here, I've suffered from a plethora of ailments including; chronic cough (the phlegmy, productive kind), violent sneeze, runny nose, headaches, chills, stomach flu, indegestion, general aches and pains, the list goes on...
