Original, innovative & creative, yet is scarred by horrid controls & inconsistent gaming mechanics.
However, the gaming mechanics are flawed and the controls suffer terribly because of it. Lots of loose, flowing ragdoll (lol?) physics hinder many control actions, primarily jumping. Any moving platform affects your jump, and you'll often find yourself falling at the most ill-fated times just because you didn't jump at the tiniest window of opportunity. There are also many cracks & crevices throughout levels, just little jagged spots that are part of the landscape but present no hazard. Yet, landing in one or trying to jump while in one results in you getting squashed for no reason other than there must be some if/then statement that simply states "if a space is 'X' narrow, sacboy instantly dies." Such a situation should only apply to objects designed to crush you, not every instance of the tiny space. That's just a couple of the frustrating mechanics that make intended fun gameplay into an aggravating experience.
Some level music is annoying, especially when you hear them constantly trying to ace levels & collect all items. Adding that to the random deaths you'll suffer will only make you curse more at this hit & miss game.
LBP places heavy emphasis on multiplayer. Infinite possibilities with online play, numerous activities with friends, great for socializing. However, the developers took that a step too far when they force you to play multiplayer to gather all items in most of the levels. I tend to reserve video games as a solitary experience, mostly because i choose to play when no one else is around/available. This game ruins that for me.
Many reviews comment on the length of the single player campaign yet with how often one has to replay levels for items & Ace wins, and forced to play with others, i can't imagine anyone with this level of patience. I can't even finish this game, it's so unplayable.
I really wanted to believe the hype, and i give it a rating based solely on the level creator & multiplayer aspect, but the frustration of playing it at all outweighs the fun 90% of the time. I want to be optimistic about LBP2 but with such high praise for LBP1, it's hard to imagine that Media Molecule will bother improving anything.
