There has always been over saturation in gaming. It makes logical sense that should a game become successful critically and/or commercially then more games like it will be made until the market no longer wants them anymore. Its a cycle that is as predictable as it is boring. It is also in large part the reason why Her Story is such a joyous breath of fresh air.
You open the game up to find an yourself staring at a desktop screen and that really is all you get to start you off and is one of the many things I admire about the game. It treats you with respect and expects you to figure out what is going on here without any in game assistance.
Your tools to uncover this mystery are simply a search bar which correspond to video clips of a woman in a police interrogation room talking to someone offscreen. It is an ode to the game that these simple tools can so quickly have you fully engaged in trying to figure out the threads of this story. Each said thread is so intriguing on its own thanks to fantastic writing and acting and will almost always lead you to another which keeps you frantically typing new information into the search engine to try and get an answer to your questions.
Those answers do not come easily and you may find yourself with even more questions as time goes on as you dig deeper into this woman life. It can be frustrating to feel like you've exhausted all your avenues of investigation until you might find yourself typing in random common words just to find new information. There is no forgone conclusion to the story, there won't be a moment where everything is tied together in a neat little bow and you get your hurray I solved it feeling.
This may discourage some but I see it as a deliberate choice by the developers to go down this route and for me this makes the game all the more delightful to tease out what information you can and the rest is left up to you to decide what really happened.
Her Story is a game that will occupy your mind long after you log out of the terminal and that I believe is perhaps its greatest asset. It evokes conversations with friends about their opinions and justifications as to how they came to their own conclusions and makes you want to scour the internet for more information. A game which can make you think and feel even while not playing it is a great triumph which few games can attest to.
Her Story is a unique and mysterious game to explore and discover and given the chance, explore it you should.
