God of War stays true to it's formula and packs a winning punch in it's latest entry.
God of War 3 really harnesses the power of the PS3, with breathtaking graphics. Everything from the massive scale of the world you'll be running to right down to the guts of a baddie being spilled onto the floor is immensely detailed and really grabs your attention. The game does a great job setting up the scene for you, as you claw your way the mountain you can hear and see the chaos that ensues around you. The massive Titans can be seen in the background while your jumping along and slashing up the hordes of enemies thrown at you. It's a beautiful presentation and adds to already epic setting.
The games story picks up right after God of War 2 with Kratos running up mount Olympas gunning for Zeus. If you were like me, you were eagerly anticipating the confrontation right after the end of GoW2. That being said, there's nothing really added to the story in this game. While God of War 2 had a couple of unexpected turns and twists, the latest entry relies more on the setting that GoW2 put in front of it rather than adding it's own elements. However, the notion of picking off the gods that stand in your way one by one is pretty enthralling. The way you kill them is sick and gruesome and stays true to the nature of Kratos. From ripping off the head of Helios and using it as a lantern to chopping off the legs of Hermes and stealing his mystical shoes, the deaths in this game are plenty satisfying.
The gameplay is almost exactly like it's predecessor. Apart from a few new tricks such as grabbing an enemy from afar and pulling yourself to them, the game doesn't have a lot of new elements. But it's just so darn fun hacking and slashing your way through this game, that you'll forget all of that. You'll get your new weapons and new magic tricks that accompany them and you can power them up and use them to your liking. My personal favorite are the claws of Hades which can summon souls to help you fight. And they just look so damn cool.
The game is reliant on the use of QTEs and they really help when you really want to kill something brutally. All of the bosses have some sort of QTE and they're not hard to do. In fact, I'd say right around the time you can initiate a QTE, you should be breathing a sigh of relief because the hard part is over.
The game is accompanied by and awesome soundtrack that'll really get you into the game while your walking around killing anything that moves. You have to hear to really understand it, but all these little things are what makes a game really special.
So, with the latest entry, you can expect everything God of War has given you before. Fun and highly stylized boss fights, endless hordes of enemies to hack and slash your way through and the conclusion of an epic tale based on Greek mythology. It's a must have for the PS3 and one of the best titles to be released for the system.
