Salvaging a Bad Situation: Or Free Tech Advances
It can be all too easy to save after a point where you can't advance any further, whether it's an unforseen rush of Aliens, or loss of funding via Country Infiltration. Not all is lost at that point. You will likely have to start over, but you can start over with all research progress and UFOpaedia information by copying certain files from one save to another.
First: Start a new game, and then save.
Second: Quit the game and copy the following files from your original save directory to the new save directory.
IE: You saved your original game in slot one and second save in slot 2, the directory would be /*whatever you named the X-Com directory.. drive:/mps/ufo/game_1/ for an example of the DOS version, then drive:/mps/ufo/game_2/ for the second save.
Files:
aknow.dat
research.dat
up.dat
soldier.dat (optional, if you've already got some good soldiers trained)
Third: load up the new game. You should have all the needed information.Contributed by: Miriani

Get loads of free stuff without wasting time or energy!
It's really easy, once you have an avenger, make sure there are no passengers in the craft, be it human or mechanical bots and send it off to Cydonia. If you did everything right (which I really hope you did...for your sake), then a mission debrief/review (whatever you call it) will pop up and you get some amount of some resource. It was a long time ago and I couldn't remember if the loot was random or determined by your inventory, but there was a lot, including elerium. As you can see, the down side is that you have to wait till the end, which by then you would have plenty of everything:).

Free manufaturing
Select the item to be manufactured, but assign no engineers and leave the number to produce at zero. Then, assign as many engineers as desired but only manufacture one item. Use tanks with this trick to easily make money.

Tips
X-Com UFO Defense – Tips:
Base building; Access lift attached to a hanger. Build off the hanger only on the opposite end of the access lift. When you're infiltrated the enemy must travel through the wide open space of the hanger making them an easy target, especially if you have a Blaster Launcher (or mind control an alien who has one).
Daylight savings; land at crash sites only during the daylight. Have your ship land next to the site and wait until it's day then direct it to the crash site.
Alien bases are good. Build your new bases right on top of the alien base. It will give you plethora of alien ships giving an easy excellent report month after month and bring supply ship to your door.
To find an alien base have your ship patrol in areas with alien activity or just random places works sometimes too.
Stay active; soldier stats grow with use.
Time units – grow with movement. Have all soldiers get as much movement as possible.
Firing accuracy – grows with shooting. Shoot at an object over and over (laser guns have unlimited ammo and the laser rifle is powerful enough to use all through the game).
Strength – grows by carrying a lot or heavy gear. Load up your soldiers with gear. I have all my soldiers carry a laser rifle and a blaster launcher with two ammo each.
Throwing accuracy; grows with your strength and by throwing things, the heavier the better.
Psi skill – grows by using the skill and training in the lab. Have those with low skill try first.
Bravery matters; fire all soldiers with bravery 30 or less. They easily panic or go berserk.
Psi matters; fire all soldiers with psi strength less than 60. They can easily be mind controlled.
Disarming aliens; when you mind control an alien, switch to soldier and go into the inventory window, then using the right or left arrow go from soldier to soldier until you find the alien, remove his gear. Now if you lose control it can't hurt you.Contributed by: Hallux_Rigidus

Various tips to get on top quickly
early game , intercept with skyranger , if ufo lands do mission at daytime ,more treasure e115.
Try to research Heavy plasma as soon/quick as possible then imed. research plasma beam.
1 interceptor no Against v.large , 3 interceptors yes , use stand off and itercept with 3 until all arrive then set all on aggressive attack without initiating, then press x select x select x so all three attack at once. , choose harder difficulty for more ufos = more treasure/money. 1 last tip , if money is high build new bases as soon as possible and send interceptors to detect in areas not covered by radars, only very large ships can shoot further than plasma beam.Contributed by: mavehammer
