Secret Message
On title screen, select the "Construction" option and press Start to enter it and Start again to return to title screen. Repeat this 6 more times and once you're back on the title screen, press and hold Down on the 1st controller and press the A button 8 times on the 2nd controller. Then, press and hold Right on the 1st controller and press the B button 12 times on the 2nd controller. Finally, press Start on controller 1 to see the secret message.

Dev Team Note
If you dig into the game's coding, have a look at PRG-ROM. At the end, you'll find some ASCII art of two words in kanji. The first word is "Ookubo" in reference to Ookubo Ryouichi, the game's programmer. The second can be translated different ways, one of which is "Udagawa," likely a reference to Haruhisa Udagawa, a dev at Namco.

Stage Select
When you start the game and the screen with 'Stage 1' shows up, please do the following. Note that this is the only moment you can perform the cheat, you can't do it afterwards.

Dev Team Note
If you dig into the ROM's code, you'll find a dev note at 0x5946. It's from Yoshitaka Takeya, the game designer, who also mentions Weird Al Yankovic and his parody song "Money for Nothing."

Level Select
When you start a new game and the screen tells you that you're on level 1, press UP to reach the desired level number. When you've chosen the level that you want, press Start to go there.

Battle City Cheats For Arcade Games

Stage Select
On the arcade (or NES VS. System, to some) release of Battle City, you can open up a stage selection option. Insert a credit first, then on the next screen hold A and B on the second controller. Press Select on the first controller and you will given 10 seconds to choose any stage from Stage 01 to Stage 35 to play.
