A VR game won this year? Is this a hipster award? Not everyone has a VR set. Fail.

@ocinom: I agree. It may be a great game, but given that almost no one (comparatively) can play the thing - it seems like an odd choice. Then again they also put Journey on here, so maybe it's just not worth caring that much about.

@ocinom: Not everyone has a PC, ps4, xbox one, or switch. So what kind of response is "not everyone has a vr headset"?

Its like some people just dont think about anything at all before they say something.

@ocinom: I completely understand what you are saying. I just believe that it doesnt matter. If a product is the "best" then thats what it is. Its not like there are a limited amount of copies of the game, or that players are not able to purchase a VR headset.

I don't have a VR headset and I have no intention of getting one. That doesnt make the game any less good because I or gamers in general decide to not to purchase the hardware to play it.

I still can't believe the original HL didn't get GOTY back when it came out. Grim Fandango was good, but Half Life elevated the entire genre at a time when it was stale as old bread. Also hard to believe that Alyx, a game that might be good but incredibly limited in accessibility, is GOTY. Not that it isn't good, but I do believe that a requirement for GOTY should be accessibility to the game. What's the point of a GOTY if most people can't play it?

@Pierce_Sparrow: "Half Life elevated the entire genre at a time when it was stale as old bread"

Uhh no it didnt. HL1 has always been an extremely average game. What the game DID do, is bring the first fully moddable engine to home users. Then you have Counterstrike, Team Fortress, etc and that is where Half Life got its legacy from.

At that time we had Quake, Quake 2, Unreal before HL1 and then Unreal Tournament Quake 3 came right after, and thats just on the PC side of things. Already the "2nd gen" of fps it was alive and well.

No Halo CE for 2001??? It’s only one of the greatest games of all time and one of if not the most important game ever to grace a console. Shame on you Gabe and shame on Gamespot for omitting such a classic.

I just checked Gamespot gave it a 9.7. And it didn’t get GOTY on this list LMAO. Smh.

Oh yeah and the OG Gears of War on 360??? I guess if it’s an Xbox related game it doesn’t count. Gears of War gameplay is still today the benchmark of 3rd person cover shooters. It still hasn’t been bettered.

@gamerbum: Halo CE, one of the greatest games of all time, had the misfortune to be released the same year as GTA III, another one of the greatest games of all time.

I'm not sure why you're bringing up "Gears of War." It won GOTY for 2006.

@gamerbum: it was close but GTAIII beat it out in 2001. I agree with you that Halo CE should have got it but GTAIII was a very revolutionary game back at that time.

@Terminator95: Yeah. When you put out the most quality games, you’re going to win the most awards. It’s a simple numbers game. Nintendo puts out fantastic games, but they’re not known for quantity. Microsoft is kind of a joke with the Xbox, and PC is just PC. Sony and the companies that make exclusives for them put out tons of hits all the time. There’s no conspiracy. They’re just on top.

@justthetip: I agree Sony has the best quality overall in exclusives (Bloodborne reigns supreme), however, this article shows it doesn't always translate in GOTY (for GameSpot at least...). For perspective, the actual numbers from the article are:

    Multiplat: 8

    Nintendo: 7

    Sony: 4

    PC: 3

    Xbox: 1

    VR: 1

    Dreamcast: 1

And if we look just at the PS4 generation (where I think Sony came up with some of their best exclusives ever):

    Multiplat: 5

    Nintendo: 2

    VR: 1

I was thinking that mb multiplats are favored as they have a wider reach...but then we have that VR game. Ah well, outliers are not a bad thing.

@amichalski81: Apparently, critics and fans LOVED Half LIfe Alyx and their attention to real life physics. The big issue is that no one has really played it, but those who have are vouching for it left and right. One Note I found interesting about the game: The physics and ability to interact with things is amazing. For instance, your character can only hold 2 grenades at a time. However, your character can carry baskets or crates and hold up to like 10 grenades in one of them, so it's up to you to find creative ways to finish the game. I hope to play it soon.

@blindbsnake: Freaking love that you included Hellblade. My first thought was that game was so unique and well-done, you just can't leave it off. I have it in my all-time list, I gave it a 9. It may lack elements of gameplay but that is not really the focus, it is just a special experience.

    2020: FF7 Remake

2019: Sekiro. Then RE2 and Metro.

    2018: God of War

2017: Horizon: Zero Dawn, RE7, Hellblade.

@Destructionzz: Just out of curiosity... What do you think about the sequel? In my mind everything that was happening in Hellblade was in Senua's mind. A battle about grief and lost... The sequel is putting my view in question...

@blindbsnake: I gotta admit I was a bit lost for a while, as I couldn't figure out if the game's story was supposed to be taken at face value, like viking age with mythological things existing like monsters etc, or was it she existed as a viking but the monsters were the imagery part, or was it she was just a regular person imagining being in the viking time. That bugged me because I like things to be clear, but as I kept playing I was so engrossed in this whole experience whether her journey was real or imaginary. I can't actually remember what I ended up thinking of it. If I recall it was clear ultimately that her journey was imaginary, or well a psychosis. The creators said after all that she was schizophrenic, the game is supporting mental health and all that. I can't remember if I got that only after reading it or if I got it before. I think I was kinda confused even by the end like, well this was amazing but... what does this all mean? The very end probably hit me like, ah she's "out" now, she was struggling in her mind, a inner battle, and that was the game. What I'm unclear on is, while the monsters and battles were in her head, was her actual journey also imaginary? What I mean is was she just sitting somewhere and dreaming it all up, or was she actually walking around as we played her, only that what she saw around her was not truly as she imagined it, with monsters and hell-ish landscapes. Was she still literally walking around though, being a viking all that? Because I actually took it as that part was true, she was a girl from that age, but with schizofrenia before this was a known thing like that. They say something about that in the game, that she's of some Celtic tribe, and that she was viewed as "cursed" because of her (at the time) unknown illness. So that part wasn't made up right? That actually always confused me and was a questioned I never really got answered.

@Destructionzz: My interpretation of the game led me to believe that everything happened in her mind. Yes, she was a warrior, but she has mental problems and is a victim of abuse. Ultimately it is a story about losse and impotence. The inner fight for healing the soul of Shenua.

Thats why the last boss turns into Shenua after killing herself.

In my mind it all made perfect sense, but now this trailer is a major problem for me, because now, everyone is seeing the "monsters"... So I dont know what to believe anymore...

I would call this "List of all the times we blew it." Quite a few stinkers:

-Total Annihilation--never went anywhere, not among RTS wonks or mainstream audience.

-Chrono Cross--Even now most people would rather play Chrono Trigger 12 times than play this once.

-Serious Sam--lol wut? I remember being baffled by this choice even 20 years ago.

-Grim Fandango--ahead of it's time, but too cultish for GOTY.

-Super Mario Galaxy over Assassin's Creed? How did that work out? *insert J Jonah Jameson laugh gif here*

-Journey! OMFG. Over Far Cry 3? Whoever made this pick should be laughed out on the industry forever.

-A Link Between worlds--completely forgettable. How did you guys miss The Last of Us that year? Not to mention GTA 5.

-HL: Alyx--Token award for not-Half-life 3. Tsushima and TLOU2 both seem to have more legs.

I will give you points for putting non-obvious ones like Demon Souls on there though.

Assassin's Creed 1 was trash. It was so disappointing after the first couple of assassinations. It was painfully repetitive and full of padding. Subsequent games were that much better. Super Mario Galaxy is an amazing game and nearly flawless in most respects.

I do agree with most of that except Half-Life Alyx. I haven't played it, but from my reading of the reviews, it finally gets VR to work in an actual game while not sacrificing the VR experience.

GTA is painfully overrated. It was a triumph when GTA III was released, but sales =/= best game of the year. For me, Uncharted is the better series vs. LOU. A Link Between Worlds, as much as I enjoyed it, I think it's a stretch it was game of year. However, 2013 was actually a pretty poor year for gaming.

@Grampy_Bone: I agree with you completely. I feel there were better games that had more "umph" more of an impact on gaming as a whole. One I didn't like: HL: Alyx, it's still too new technology-wise for anybody to have really appreciated it. Of all games I could play right now, this is the least I could play right now. So, of everything this one in particular is hard to justify. I mean does a game have to be widely available for it to be rated? I don't think so, but then I'd start looking elsewhere for game of the year awards. Imma give a hard pass on Game Spot this year.

@Grampy_Bone: Agree with some of your comments, except Far Cry 3 over Journey. Though a fan of Far Cry having OCD for open-world games and played them all, I still think Journey was overall a much more amazing and unique experience.

@skippert: The question is, how many people played Journey vs. Far Cry 3, and which has had more impact on the industry over all?

I think a lot of times reviews are activism rather than critique. The goal of promoting Journey as GOTY was to try to *make* it into a hit, not critique it.

@Grampy_Bone: Perhaps, but I am going off my own experience with both games and the impact they have had on me personally, I don't usually take reviews all that seriously these days. On the one hand, you have this beautiful and artistic-like experience and on the other a large open world with lots of mechanics. Both are enjoyable but only one brings something truly unique to the table. The other is just a rehash that brings features already seen or improved upon in other Ubi titles. Doesn't necessarily mean that it's a bad game, far from it, it's just something that keeps coming back in Ubi games such as Far Cry, Assassins Creed, and Watch Dogs. A rinse and repeat experience.

@Grampy_Bone: A couple of notes about your comments:

Some years, there aren't many choices. Dry spells in the industry so to speak, so having a couple forgettable choices is really just more indicative of that year in gaming to me, and a good time capsule. Also, not every game they choose has to be the biggest blockbuster of the year. It might just be the one that touched them more than any other.

Assassin's Creed 1, in retrospect, is pretty garbage. At the time, it was eye candy for sure, but it has aged incredibly poorly. I tried playing it again recently, it is extremely difficult to stick with. The series has improved so much since then. Hell, even AC2 was miles better than AC1. Meanwhile, Mario Galaxy is still recognized as one of the best Mario games in the series... I mean, personally, I hated Mario Galaxy. But most gamers out there see it as the golden standard for Mario games, and that means something.

As per the article, for a few years, they awarded more than 1 GotY, with a separate PC only category, which is why Serious Sam was included. Notice, that it was next to GTA3, which is by most accounts the "real" GotY for that year.

Aside from all that, most of the picks on this list seem spot on to me. The vast majority of these 24 picks seem accurate.

@P00DGE: AC was hugely influential. Super Mario Galaxy was not. I don't know who these mythical Mario fans are you are talking about, but Galaxy was a sales disappointment for Nintendo. That's why the sequel shipped with an insulting 'instruction video,' because Nintendo assumed people didn't like the game because they couldn't figure it out. Nintendo refuses to admit that people don't really care for 3D Mario.

Meanwhile Assassin's Creed blew open the doors on what people thought was possible with games. Not giving it GOTY is unbelievable myopia from people who supposedly do this for a living.

@Grampy_Bone: Not one thing you said about Mario Galaxy was true. With a single minute of research:

"Super Mario Galaxy has been a commercial success, selling 350,000 units in Japan within its first few weeks of sale.[69] In the United States, the game sold 500,000 units within its first week of release, earning it the highest first-week sales for a Mario game in the country at the time."

"Super Mario Galaxy was a critical and commercial success, hailed as one of the greatest video games of all time. At the time of its closure in 2019, Super Mario Galaxy was the highest-rated game of all time on review-aggregating site GameRankings. It received universal acclaim from critics, who praised the game's visuals, gravity mechanics, soundtrack, and setting. It won several awards from gaming publications, including multiple "Game of the Year" titles, and became the first Nintendo title to win the British Academy Games Award for Best Game.[2]"

In my own life, I have never met anyone other than myself who did not LOVE Mario Galaxy. Among multiple groups of friends, my negative opinion is the subject of much ire, as they love Galaxy. I wasn't exaggerating when I said that it is often considered the Golden Standard of Mario titles.

Also, people don't care for 3d Mario? What kind of weird twisted reality goggles are you viewing this from? 3D mario games are insanely popular. Mario Odyssey has sold 18.99 million copies as of September. Every single 3D mario title is often regarded as one of the crowning jewels of it's corresponding console. 3D Mario is extremely successful, often very well reviewed, and usually held in very high regard by fans even years after release.

I say all this as someone who doesn't even like Mario games much to begin with. They aren't often my cup of tea, but I can still recognize how overwhelmingly popular they are, and how high Nintendo's standard of quality for them usually is.

@Grampy_Bone: Super Mario Galaxy was way better than Assassin's Creed. I remember the concept of assassin's creed being cool but god damn was the gameplay super repetitive and the combat was pretty shit back then.

@Grampy_Bone: chrono cross was absolutely my favourite game that year. Will agree with serious Sam lol. I quite liked a link between worlds! Wouldn’t have called it my game of the year though.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein got a 9.2 on here in 2001. How in the hell is Serious Sam the top reviewed PC game with an 8.9?

@gut_eater: Again, a review is one person's opinion. These Games of the Year are selected by group consensus.
