Xbox achievements - what can i do with them?

Hi, i recently bought an Xbox elite with Fallout 3 (which is a great game) during the game play it came up on the screen i had successfully completed an achievement.

Can i use these achievement points on Xbox live or are they there to show off to my friends?!!

I showed mine off to friends. They immediately called me the Supreme God Of Man, and I'm due to be elected for Emperor of The World tomorrow. I'm also going to play poker with Jesus this weekend. All as a result of my achievements in gaming.Zach68486

i showed mine to my mom and she cried. she was really proud of me.. she bought me a watch the next day. take that college diploma and showing my mom my wife pregnant with my kids!! yea there just there for show, man.
