I haven't played SC:C, but I can say that just from the campaign that Gears 2 is awesome. Haven't got into the multiplayer hardly at all (I really need to try horde mode though), but in my opinion the single player was epic!
Kind of late to be getting into gears..... I would go with Splinter Cell

Really? I guess were super early to get into Splinter Cell... this being the 4th or 5th game in the Splinter Cell series......................................... I haven't played SC: Conviction yet but I'd put my money on Gears of War 2.... Epic campaign... Epic online Multiplayer.... Epic everything and people have been playing it ever since launch... there is not another SC announced yet, thats what he meant
I don't know what kinds of games you like the most, but I own SC:c and not Gears, so I'm telling you from experience. Gears is cheaper, lots of fun, horde is more fun, and..yeah. Splinter cell conviction is a great game, but if your really good at that type of game( like I am), then you'll beat it fast, on realistic difficulty, and then you'll be bored, because the other modes aren't great. So yeah...go with the Gears :)
Haven't played SCC, nor do I have any intention, so I can't really comment on that. Gears of War 2 is an amazing game though, better than the first game in every way possible.
