Don't feel bad at all - Half Life is one of the most over-hyped game franchises in existence in my opinion. Contrary to what Valve would have you believe - it's not for everyone. It certainly isn't one of the best games of all time. It's simply a matter of preference.
I played it a few years too late also. The exposure to technologically superior games in the later years was probably the culprit for why I (and many other late Half Life 2 players) didn't receive the same experience that millions of others did during its' release. I'm thinking that part of the "awe" was experiencing the unique gravity-gun with the new Havok physics engine; however, throughout the years many games have taken advantage of the tech as well and other fascinating technologies have emerged. This is how I feel anyway, i'm guessing that others may have similar thoughts.
The story is interesting and I enjoyed playing through HL2 and the 2nd expansion pack (I forget the actual name), unfortunately, I didn't get the amazing experience that so many have claimed. I really loved Portal though, I didn't expect it to have a story, but it was really fun and engaging to play through.
In websites like this, the main response you'll probably get is that it is unlawful to dislike cult (although popular in the die hard gaming community) games like anything by Valve. You're supposed to hate popular and games like Halo like they were made by Al Qaeda.
But my response is that i don't blame you. Nothing made in this world will be liked by everyone...well except things like water.
You're a few years late. Go play some Halo.BK-Sleeper
In before PC fanboys say...Heresy!
Go and Play overrated Halo 3badtaker
i didn't either but to be fair it's outdated now.DeathtransitMy feelings exactly. I didn't like that you were so isolated in the original Half Life 2.. but in the episodes, you're joined by Alyx most of the times. Because it's outdated, you get this weird feeling when you play it. How you move about, without head bobble. It feels like a 90's shooter. There's no weight to it. But to be fair, it's based on a very outdated Source engine. It's not terrible, but it will turn some people off.
Why does a dated game make it bad? Halo 3 is dated as well, if your going to argue about such things. I agree though, Some games aren't for everyone. I personally loved it. But like Bioshock, I hated it. SLUSHiNaToR
Indeed. Why does a 'dated' game make it bad? I still play Sonic 1 and 2 on the SEGA Megadrive. It's dated, but by no means bad. Halo 1, 2 and 3 are dated but are some of my favorite FPS. Every game will become dated in time and that does not make it bad.
I recently picked up the orange box for the 360 and am in the middle of Playing through Half-Life 2 for the first time ( I know, I'm a bit late >_> _>). It is by no means dated. Sure, the graphics aren't quite as good as a game released in 2010, but there rather close. And the use of physics is unique. I can't name another FPS that uses physics in the way HF2 does (excluding Portal that is). If you don't like it, you don't like it. If you like it, you like it. Nothing wrong with you if you don't like it xD
Anyways, I just hate people who think something is bad just because it's old. I hear people all the time saying, "That games crap, it's soo old and outdated". >_>
Bought the orange box on 360, thought it was ok. I love it on pc though because i can just about run it on max settings LOL, (on laptop)
currently my favourite game is the re-release of Perfect Dark on XBLA. same great game with super smooth framerate and high def textures. gameplay is IDENTICAL, but the game is ten years old. does it feel dated? slighty. but some newer games havent learnt from even this old game. most current FPS hold ur hand and highlight the objective in bold fonts. PD makes u acutally FIND stuff, BY YOURSELF!
how far did you get, it starts out very slow paced, gets better towards the end, but it is kind of a "puzzle shooter" after you get the grav-gun
I don't think it's outdated. I played it for the first time only a year ago. I will say that I really didn't get into the game until Ravenholm, though. After that, it went on to become one of my favs of all time. TC, how far did u go before u decided u didn't like it? It takes awhile before you get some really good weapons(gravity gun, pulse rifle Kojo222I beat it.

It's a puzzle shooter, but not really that much of a puzzle shooter. A puzzle shooter constantly puts you in situations where you have to figure out how to leave the area or escape from an enemy without being killed and in other areas manuever through a hazard that has enveloped an entire area, it keeps you constantly thinking about what you have to do. HL1 is 3x the puzzle shooter that HL2 is. The goliath bug looking alien that needed to be killed by alternate means, the sound alien in the rocket test chamber, marines with rocket stations in the tunnels, the crossbow inside the cage that falls into the water with the deadly giant alien fish, etc. I've played through most of HL2 and the closest to those situations is the ant lion beach section. Everything else was solveable by getting to the other side of the room/hallway/connected rooms or killing everything or doing a "very" simple physics puzzle. HL2 is MUCH more action focused than HL1.
Also, dude your not alone, I didn't like HL2 either. It really sucks to be out there and constantly have to hear about how great the game is from everyone the moment Valve comes up. I attempted to play and like the game relatively soon after it came out too, I was excited for it.
