Hello,

So playing through Silent hill 2 remake never played any game in series. very impressed with it. the game is very atmospheric, dark and terrifying, the beginning of game is walking in fog which I though it might be another third person walking in straight line cinematic game but nope. it grab me after hour and so. so not a third person movie game for sure.

It rely heavily on exploration the game let you to explore every different location to find clues and etc

the combat is not very good but definitely improved from original for sure and its not bad.

while RE2 and 4 remake feel like action horror. this feel like proper survival horror game. blooper team really did excellent job with this. now bring on STALKER 2 next month

also surprise it work fine on my PC. Unreal engine 5 is blessed.

so my friends, is this finally pure survival horror masterpiece?

Not going to read OP for fear of spoilers lol. But what I can say is that the original is already considered a survival horror masterpiece and one of the best games ever. I''m 5 hours into the Remake and they have done an amazing job with it. Will give my final verdict after I finish!

I hear it's fun but prone to crashing unexpectedly.

Curious what Bloober will tackle next now that this and Layers Of Fear remake are behind them. Fingers crossed it'll be a new Observer game.

Yeah, sounds good, might need to give it a go. Never played any of the Silent Hill games.

"...but they also ask us to canonize what being modern means, validating the notion that the only form big budget games can take now is one where they have an over-the-shoulder camera perspective where you hold L1 to aim and R1 to shoot, by updating everything to that same model."

He's right. Totally agree with the video.

I'm up to the last level. The boss fights dramatically improved. I have had some weird glitches like enemies just disappear mid combat, lol.

Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece.

Silent Hill 2 remake is a repeat of that masterpiece.

Great for those not played.

The original Silent Hill 2 was already a masterpiece. This is apparently a solid remake of the classic.

Yeah it's amazing. It's better than the Resident Evil 4 Demake, but not as good as Resident Evil 7 / Resident Evil 2 Remake imo. Crazy to think Bloober Team had it in them to create something on par with Capcoms best. Sure you can put it down to them having the original as a blueprint, but what they did with that blueprint is worthy of praise. Brookhaven Hospital and Toluca Prison are masterclasses of game design, especially the latter.

I always enjoyed SH more than RE so it shouldn't be too hard to get into after I start playing.

The RE4 remake is a masterpiece. It is certainly better than the original RE4, which was not very good, and people like it because of nostalgia.

No it isn't lol. It's objectively inferior to the original. The only area where the Remake improved upon the original was the Island area. Everything else was a downgrade.

Remake heavily improved its combat, remove QTE segments, remove stupid cant walk shoot element. much better control especially on PC with KB/M.

Original RE4 was very overrated and I was one of the biggest critics of original game had no hope for remake but its masterpiece and definitely better than original by far.

At its best, it's an accurate enough reimagining of the original, with a camera and control scheme that is more like modern action games.

If that's your idea of "masterpiece", sure. Sounds laughable to me.

Haven't played the original Silent Hill 2, but I bet my left nut it's better than the remake. Just like with RE4.

Have not played it but can judge game is not good and modern action. lol classic. its not even action game. there's very little ammo and more rely on exploration.

I have not played original too but remake is proper survival horror game unlike action horror or walking sim horror.

I haven't played the original either. Well, about thirty minutes with the emulator a few years ago. But this remake makes me want to try again. I'd rather experience the original than a standardized over-the-shoulder shooter version of it.

To me the very first Silent Hill game is still the best. The graphics are outdated now of course, but back then, the game left me with an unforgettable experience.

Watch any video of the game and you clearly see that they went with modern third person shooter camera and controls instead of what the original did.

And what's with the "not good and modern action"? Who said that? I think it looks like a pretty good remake from what I've seen. Calling it "a masterpiece" still sounds laughable though, and I bet it makes fans of the original cringe.

You mean like exactly what you are doing? All the time? With like.... all games in existence that aren't in your tiny circle of games that you play? You're the Ultralord of criticizing games you haven't played.

Spoilers don't have a timeline. Not everybody plays games at the same time. People often play games years after release and don't want things spoiled. Pretty simple concept.

@Litchie: of course why remake it with fix camerw which suck and onlymhappened before. Due to lack of technology on consoles otherwise PC always had third person camera like Max payne in 2001 which was ahead of its time.

And this thread is just another one of your "I found a game I like, so now game is masterpiece" threads. Not sure why I even engage with those. They're ridiculous, you're ridiculous. Yeah, if you find a game you like when you only like about 10 games, it's probably a masterpiece to you, but it sounds weird for everyone else.

because most moderns games are

  • Cinematic walking in straight line movie games
  • Woke trash
  • some weird cartoonish F2P looter shooter
  • generic boring open world games.

so its not my fault that most modern games are trash. and games definitely do not fall in this category are masterpieces.

so yes RE4 remake and Silent hill 2 are masterpieces in their genre. neither games going full on movie games or woke games.

The camera angles were a design choice dude. Ever heard of the dutch angle? Zero dutch angles in the remake (outside of cutscenes) due to the over the shoulder camera. Its the main reason the remake lacks the dreamlike atmosphere of the original

@ghosts4ever: Geez you talk so much crap Ghost. For example, if a game isn't open world, woke wtf that means) movie games or cartoony f2p looter shooters then they're masterpieces, is about as dumb as a take as one can have.

fixed camera cannot work with keyboard and mouse unlike OTS camera.

@Litchie: of course why remake it with fix camerw which suck and onlymhappened before. Due to lack of technology on consoles otherwise PC always had third person camera like Max payne in 2001 which was ahead of its time.

Another "I watch video and its not as good as original because remake remake im allergic to them yaya"

The camera angles were a design choice dude. Ever heard of the dutch angle? Zero dutch angles in the remake (outside of cutscenes) due to the over the shoulder camera. Its the main reason the remake lacks the dreamlike atmosphere of the original

fixed camera cannot work with keyboard and mouse unlike OTS camera.

Wut

I like this post.

I couldn't disagree more with a lot of the above. It's a visual treat but that's about it. Much of the important little things and nuances are either gone or misinterpreted for the worse. Most importantly, the tacked on (and simplified) Callisto Protocol esque battle mechanic is an absolute slog to the point it drags the entire game down with it. The original had what was effectively a defense mechanic to protect the player from ambient environmental hazards which served an aesthetic and narrative purpose; the remake goes for game-ified enemy encounters as necessity. These are in no shape or form the same, and it misunderstands what's so compelling about Silent Hill 2. James is a video game character, but he's presented and is engaged with like a person. Remake James plays as a video game character.

It's a very frustrating drawn-out experience. There's nothing 'new' in the game, it is exclusively drawn out enemy encounters and otherworld sequences ripped straight out of Homecoming which were in-turn ripped straight out of the movie. They're horribly paced and entirely straight forward fetch sequences wherein player gets obvious key item for obvious door; there is no longer any player/game friction as the locales are no longer 'real human spaces' but video game stages. Enemy gauntlets run just about wild in the final third of the game. The forced battle arena shower room exemplifies this. Not only that, it's poorly balanced and the enemies play typical "stop hitting me" tactics replete with teleporting attacks and morphing hitboxes of convenience. They behave the same way, every encounter plays out the same way, and the way the game enforces it as a necessity removes all horror and tension. There is no surprise, there is nothing on the line. James will circle strafe game dodge karate-kicking mannequins and knife wielding nurses who simply go "okay, you will give me a turn to attack now, I will teleport through and shank you." At times it's actually glorious in a funny way, which is also sad. I love difficult games, I love being challenged. 2 remake is not either of these things. It is a test in patience out of necessity to provide an expected gaming experience for battle mechanic fixation.

It is fundamentally still stuck where Konami wants the series; it is everything that currently performs well in the upper echelon of the industry. It's a shame too, because the presentation is spot-on for the most part. When you aren't battling forced enemy waves or traversing fun house stages, the game is pretty well excellent and gorgeous to look at. Masahiro Ito's creature designs are fabulous as they've always been and perfectly reflected on screen. If only it wasn't an 8 hour game essentially stretched into a 20 hour slog of mirrored repeat Callisto Protocol-lite enemy encounters, and truly flat character acting and direction out of Maria, a central core aspect of the game's aesthetic and narrative. Angela is alright, and Eddie is very memorably Eddie. Laura is not only Laura but fantastically acted and her chemistry with remake James is very good. James is James until he isn't. Mixed bag of the century.

This re-interpretation, as much as it gets right, Konami unfortunately sat in the background pulling their strings and filing teeth down to the halfway point. That's it, that's all.

Oh, Ghost was talking about the shitty limitation of eight way WASD movement in cinematic (fixed) cams. Can't add the additional degrees of movement with the mouse if you have no control over the camera. Then stop being stubborn and pick up a controller.

Pathetic platform in some ways, PC. The big devs could have together come up with a controller specifically for flat surfaces, that has the superior aiming of a mouse combined with full degrees of navigation on the left, and the six other digits not wasted like with controllers. But the idiots decided tools made for work were enough, and the players back their lack of ambition.

Only Silent Hill I played was Downpour. Bad first start in the franchise. :3 Looking forward to playing this once it's heavily discounted.

First one I played was Silent Hill 4 The Room. I get what they were trying to do, but I got a bit bored early on. Silent Hill 2 original didn't age too well imo. Started playing it, but felt like a bit of a slog at the beginning and then I got a bit bored. I liked Silent Hill Shattered Memories though. I really like how it was constantly evaluating your decisions and then changing.

I strangely have no problem replaying the old isometric RE games though. Love them.

Not sure when I'll play this, but judging by the glitches people are mentioning, like most current gen games, I'd rather wait until completely fixed for the best experience.

Why don't they do what Capcom is doing and just remake all of them from the beginning.

I hear it's fun but prone to crashing unexpectedly.

Curious what Bloober will tackle next now that this and Layers Of Fear remake are behind them. Fingers crossed it'll be a new Observer game.

Haven't had any crashes, although it does have the traversal stutter.

Absolutely loving it so far(about 14 hours in on Hard combat difficulty) and I hope Konami sees enough success with this that they re-do all of the Silent Hills in the same vein.
