Rumor: Horizon Online is Guerilla's next game

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier has appeared on the Spawncast, where he got caught up in a conversation about Guerrilla’s current plans. There’s obviously quite a lot of Horizon on the way this year, with Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered due on 31st October and LEGO Horizon Adventures slated to follow on 14th November.

But what will come after those two? “Horizon Online is their next product, not the third single player game, looks like,” he explained. “So, that one may be ways off.”

Schreier continued: “PlayStation’s live service initiative was no joke, everybody was like, ‘It’s live service games all around.’ Horizon is one of the few ones that hasn't been cancelled or hasn't come out and flopped the way Concord did and so yeah, a lot of questions. A lot of people are working on that.”

It’s probably worth adding some context here. To the best of our knowledge, Horizon Online has been in development since around 2018, when Killzone veteran Simon Larouche returned to the Dutch studio to lead production on a multiplayer game. That means the project is probably close to completion.

Horizon Forbidden West, meanwhile, released in 2022, so its single player successor is likely still in early pre-production. It makes sense, then, that the bulk of Guerrilla’s development forces would be focused on the multiplayer game for now.

Thoughts, SW? Do you think a Horizon Online game could work? Would you be interested? I've never been into MMOs, but I'd keep an open mind about it.

Hopefully the game will live longer than 2 weeks.

So we have this Horizon online game AND the MMO that NCSoft is working on? Wow…lol

Horizon MP online was one of the things Jim scraped it at first but now that he's gone and Concord crashed, I can see the new Sony leads can make Horizon online a reality of being good as the series is a good brand to go by.

It's not a bad idea, but I'm not interested in online games so I'll probably skip it.

It's enough with the Horizon already, and I say this as someone who enjoyed the first two games.

I enjoyed Zero Dawn and Forbidden West but it feels like they’re running this thing into the ground.

They are really pushing the Horizon series. Hopefully they don't create fatigue from releasing so much in the series.

Hopefully it flops miserably.

Another easy pass.... Very little interest in any single player franchise being turned into an online experience.

I didn't even want there to be a 2nd last of us sp game. Lol. The first game was perfect.... They should've left it as a Mona Lisa in gaming instead of sequalizing it... But that's not gonna happen in today's gaming world. Maybe for an indie studio.

Always thought that Horizon would make a good monster hunter type game.

I guess a better phrasing would have been: "Playstation's live service initiative was not meant to be a joke". Because it is a joke. Taking a brilliant lineup of games, that was the envy of their competitors, and completely destroying it. The incompetence at display is mindblowing.

Besides making another monster hunter clone ( and do we really need more of those??) I have no idea how it would work…

Also imo they are pushing the way to much horizon contest into the world, series is good but nothing spectacular! Would much rather have them working on something else

Do I think an MMO or service-based game could do well utilizing the "Horizons" license? Yes.

Do I think Sony will execute it well? No.

Do I think it would ruin Guerilla Games? Most definitely.

Do I like asking and then answering my own questions? Absolutely.

Their track record for quite some time isn't that great tbh.

Their business strategies are consumer antagonistic, including: fee increases, removing games and movies from accounts, and so on. They've started requiring PSN accounts for games that have absolutely zero reason to require them and, worse of all, they know they messed up because they have removed the requirements after we complain. They've taken games off markets in over half the countries in the world, killing online communities.

They have focused on service-based game development, with next to nothing to show for it at this point except a [allegedly] $400-million hole.

And now they're saying they have ANOTHER service-based game in a franchise where a remaster just got a doubled price discreetly added to its upgrade cost.

Sony is not only giving us a reason to not have faith in them, they're giving us a reason to actively root against them.

The worst part of it all is, outside of PC, they probably have some of the best hardware and peripherals available, especially with the recent PS 5 Pro (high price notwithstanding). Just begging for games, good service, and a community, and yet...nothing.

really? spiderman 2 and astrobot are there last big games. both great games. helldivers2 was a success

xbox and other striptions have gone up and take down games all the time.

9 after 9 scored games since the launch of the ps5. its good sony is trying to add online games to there library. concord just looked like crap. but a last of us and horizon online would of hit hard. remasters are great to for players. 10 bucks to upgrade is a great price. its not just resolution bumps.

Helldivers 2 owes its success to PC players, and was also a good example of Sony's poor business strategies: requiring PSN account after saying they wouldn't, flip-flopping by then saying "Ok OK we take it back, you don't need it", and then seemingly out of spite delisting it from stores in hundreds of countries, killing the amount of players. No wonder there was a steep dropoff in players.

What else is there between those 11 or so months? What good has Sony done for their players, outside of PS 5 Pro and a small handful of titles?

I really would like Sony to do well--I believe that a rising tide lifts all ships, and competition works best with all companies doing their best--but I just don't see how we can be optimistic about them right now.

I'm not a hater, just a bit pessimistic and for many reasons.

yes sonys first party had a slow year but its because they had so many of them come out years prior since the console launched. still had some great third party games though. 2025 looking good so far and 2024 still not done yet. still have behemoth and silent hill 2 coming. sony still paid for those third party exclusives.

sony still had plenty games for ps5 owners in 2024.

2025 looks even worse. Sony has no games in 2024 and nearly NEGATIVE games in 2025.

death stranded 2 is being developed to be part of playstation studios games. they are also using a in house engine that made hfw2.

Yeah it feels like too much power in the hands of somehone who may not be that in tune with what people want. Sure they can see what sells now, but the tricky thing about entertainment is that people get fed up with trends after a while.

I also think some CEOs feel like they have to make drastic changes. Leave their mark on the company, so to speak. If that is your attitude then it's tempting to look at what currently is making the most money (GTA online, Fortnite) and be like: "That is what we will do".

Playstation already had a winning recipe imo. The CEO just needed to not f* it up 🙄
