The demise of the affordable gaming PC has been exaggerated.

I've been considering upgrading my venerable RTX 2080 for a 3070 for some time but as you know the prices have been insane, nearly twice the price of the MSRP. But, they seem to be dropping. Just yesterday I saw RTX 3070's coming in for £650, that's quite a drop from the end of last year's price of £800 and they're still going down.

So when are you guys going to take the plunge and upgrade your gaming battle stations?

Be keeping this GTX something or another for at least another 2-3 years.

Not one of those assholes who run out and drops £500+ whenever some misc shit has been announced need a magnifying glass to notice.

When the RTX 4080 launches. I already have a 3080 since launch at MSRP, so I did not get raped by shortages or crazy prices. Just looking forward to the new GPUs.

Pff, I dunno. Still rocking my 1070, so I'll just upgrade whenever I feel like I need to. Right now it's not worth hundreds of dollars to gain a few fps. I've always upgraded only when I need to in order to play all the latest shit at good fps. Whenever I upgrade, I'll probably get a 1440p monitor as well, and be set for years to come again.

I have a FE 3060Ti at the moment. Was trying to get a FE 3080 for a few months, but decided to just wait for 4000 series instead. Will be going for 4070 or something, depending on TDP and pricing.

They’re still too expensive, heck MSRP was too expensive for what this gen offered IMO. My 1070 will continue to tide me over until at least Lovelace/RDNA3 has been out and started to drop in price.

@Litchie: Might as well get a 4k monitor if you're going to upgrade to a newer card and looking to keep it for years to come. 1440p in 2022 is just ewe imo.

I just upgraded my 1440p monitor to the new Alienware 34" OLED. Talk about a major difference.

What is wrong with 1440p? The new AW3423DW is also 1440p, but ultrawide. Did u get yours already? I ordered right away and have to wait until June here in Canada. I currently have the AW3418DW.

Nah. 1080p still looks great. And when I get a new GPU, I thought I might as well upgrade to 1440p monitor, since the new card will handle it well. Don't care about 4K at all. Not a fan of losing a ton of performance for little gain. And with the extra cost of a 4K monitor at that, just dumb imo. Also probably wouldn't buy a 34" monitor. Sounds too big. Unless it's ultrawide, maybe.

Got a RTX 3080 not too long ago for just slightly over MSRP, so I am good for a while.

I always try to buy something a little more capable than the current gen or upcoming gen console so it's good for at least two of their generations.

With that said, I was a little greedy and I went from a GTX 980 to an RTX 2080, then because I felt like it I bought an RTX 3080. I don't regret it (the card is amazing, why would I?) but it was definitely not my normal strategy.

Good to hear, maybe a sign supply shortages of chips are easing up, hopefully other sectors of production won't hit as many hurdles, like consoles.

When are GPU prices ever below MSRP really? They usually hold their value until the next generation of cards come out.

thats because you're an nvidia fanboy. AMD gpus were regularly going below msrp long before covid. I was able to pick up a radeon 7950 with 5 games for like $300 back in the day. That was 1 year post launch.

The RTX 3070 easily outperforms a Series X/PS5 any day of the week. Even more so when it comes to RT performance.

Nvidia fanboy... LOL. Are you seriously bringing up a 10 year old GPU? LOL

If a GPU is going below MSRP, that means there isn't much demand for it (and it probably doesn't compete well with what else is available) and they are trying to dump stock. If you keep waiting for prices to go below MSRP, then you are going to have a long miserable wait. Also, LOL at comparing consoles to a 3070 again. Keep dreaming bud.

What are your specs? Are you still running that 7950 as your main GPU? You talk a lot of shit and sound like an idiot.

I still have my RTX 2070 but I'm itching to upgrade on an RTX 3070Ti or wait for the RTX 4000 series which is technically launching this September 2022. I'll head over to Micro Center this Friday and see what they got available. Plus, I'm still gaming in 1440p/165hz so that boost will help me out on certain games. Not interested in 4K.

I use to think the RTX 2070 would last another 3yr but after playing Cyberpunk 2077, it shows the RTX 2070 isn't gonna last that long if you don't think about playing ultra settings.

Might wait for the 4000 or 5000-series GPUs.

I really don't need any more power than I have right now. I have a 2080ti.

Next major upgrade will probably be a baller QD-OLED display with HDR1000 and G-SYNC Ultimate. Just waiting for a few more mfgs to get in the game.

you're the one who said GPUs never go below MSRP. That was a hot take only reserved for nvidia fanboys. Nvidia deals are so bad, I haven't bought a single gpu from then since the geforce 460 days. For me, I always buy in terms of FRAMES per dollar, and nvidia has been terrible at that since they started off selling gpus. FRAMES are KING, always been the case.

Nvidia doesn't even follow the laws of a normal company, because of so many SHEEP buying their over rated trash at inflated prices. That fact has kept me out of the nvidia market. Its not like I couldn't afford one, but I refuse to buy a geforce gpu when the AMD one is hundreds of dollars cheaper. And I don't subscribe to their nvidia gimmicks either, not dsl, and not physx and not anything else they have. Give me frames and give me a deal.

Im running an amd ryzen 2600 plus a radeon 580 4gb. I normally would have upgraded my gpu by now but since we haven't had a gpu deal, i refuse to buy one. I don't need a gpu and can live without one if need be. Since theres no point in upgrading my gpu, theres no point in upgrading the rest of my rig either. The ryzen 2600 is a fine cpu for most things.

I'll look into the 4080 when it releases, otherwise my 2080 is holding up just fine, especially since I upgraded to the 12700k, z690, and DDR5 a few months ago.

Where did I say never? GPUs going below MSRP is rare even before the pandemic. So, you are looking for this buying situation that is not common and it is keeping you out of the market. Also, like I explained, that below MSRP scenario is usually triggered by the product not being a good value any more. So, going back to the 7950 with the lower price and 5 pack in games, that reeks of desperation and they are trying to add value back into the product. Anyway, it seems like you are the fanboy for AMD and anti-Nvidia more than anything. I want both companies to put out good products and the same goes for Intel. Hopefully when the new cards come out, you can find some kind of clearance GPU or used one or something that you find to be a good deal. That 580 is ready to retire.

that kind of situation was fairly common before the days of the crypto nonsense. Nowadays its gotten worse and worse. I may be anti nvidia, but more than anything im always looking for the better deal. If nvidia offered a decent deal, id have bought one by now. If anything im loyal to my wallet, and thats how a consumer should be end of the day. I don't give 2 shits about nvidias scam marketing of physx, dsl, and whatever else nonsense they're hyping nowadays. If they can't give me frames at a good price, they can gtfo. Even my AMD cpu, I bought because I got a great deal on it. Before that I was long time intel user. If I were to upgrade today, it would be a hard choice but id lean towards the intel 12th gen alderlake chips.

Yeah thanks...hopefully I can find a decent gpu at a decent price, but im not counting on it nor am I in any kind of rush. My 580 is definitely getting long. The issue with it isn't the power, but the 4gb of VRAM which is holding it back. I really should have bought the 8gb version when I had the chance.

Normally, it be okay to buy 2 GPUs when SLI (CrossFire) was still a thing and now, no point in buying 2 GPU when SLI is no longer supported. Sad to see it go as I never got around trying out SLI for myself😔

@davillain: I did SLI way back in the day with the 8800 GTS 512MB. That was back in 2007/2008? Time flies. lol Never saw the need to do it again due to the cost wasn't that reasonable, especially since I was only rocking 1920x1200 back then.

Don't plan on getting another one for a while, mine suits me well enough for now. I do need a cpu upgrade though but that can wait a bit too.

Only situation I can see in which I get the new 40 series is if a) can get one for close to the price I can sell my old card for, b) PSU requirements are not crazy (as rumored) and c) the 40 series provides a substantial bump in performance from 30 series.

At this point i want Bestbuy to get the 3060ti FE and a 3070 FE. If the FE versions are no available, i will most likely wait for the 4000 series. At least the gpu's are finally popping out in Canada.

Hopefully around June/July at the rate things are going. Prices are still too high at the moment for what you are getting imho. Hopefully nab a 6800XT tier GPU around then along with a new CPU (probably 5800X), Ram and Mobo.

I don't think i'll bother waiting for next Gen GPUs or CPUs. if the price is right i'll pull the trigger (i have a figure in my head but its top secret). For all we know new GPUs could launch and we are right back in Crypto Boom 3....Rise of the Crypto 2....the sequel :P. The jump from a Vega 64 to a 6800XT tier GPU is a big enough jump for me anyway.

Dunno, whenever I feel like it or something goes wrong with my 2080. Probably a few years. I don't upgrade often. Had an R9 290 before.

Still doing fine with my GTX 1650. I tend to play old games at a steep discount, so it handles most of what I own pretty well. If Intel's ARC gpus turn out all right, I might get a second gen one. Otherwise, maybe a 4050 or 7500 if pricing is back to normal when those happen.

I have a 3090. I rode my 970 from 2014, till the day the 3090 came out. I'll probably ride this for the long haul, framerate is the only thing I concern myself with a game, and I end up playing a lot of old games anyway, so I'm never overly in a hurry to replace it for the stronger card. A video game having really detailed trees doesn't do shit for me.

I will say I won't but then the 4000 series will release and I'll buy one.

Be keeping this GTX something or another for at least another 2-3 years.

Not one of those assholes who run out and drops £500+ whenever some misc shit has been announced need a magnifying glass to notice.

What GTX?

I have a GTX 1070, but am using my brother's 2070. Says he needs my two extra GB of VRAM for something. Not interested in upgrading my 1070. The games are mediocre to bad, and I'm fine playing the few exceptions at medium.
