When it comes down to it, it really doesn't matter, micrsoft is selling consoles so why invest 100 million into a game or studio that may flop.

None of those flopped, and Microsoft wasted $500 million in advertising for Kinect.

Yep, I'm sure if they're dead last next gen they'll invest into some new studios.

Still microsoft doesn't see the need to drop money into ip. Then agian at any chance studios will go multiplatform, more people equals more money.
Kinect has sold well so far.
Sony has to put the money into ip as they don't have really anything to fall back on. They have blueray, guess what i can get one for 80 bucks now.
So...what's the point? I think it's better that these developers got to keep the rights to the games that they worked hard to create. That means if the publisher treats them like crap, they can walk away and take the property that they love with them somewhere else. How is this bad?jalexbrownThis! I was waiting for someone else to say that - but I agree completely. I'd much rather that (for example) Remedy own the rights to Alan Wake, and thus choose to keep it on the 360 because of their good relationship with MS, same with Epic. Understand that in many cases there may be contracts preventing that, but it's better than MS buying an IP and then locking a developer down to a specific platform when they could expand if they wished.

They also supply their users free online versus play.

Once again great, but it awlays a step or two behind xbl.
Xboxs sell becuase of their online.
:? Why invest billions into the console market if you aren't doing it right? Exclusives sell consoles after all. Xbox 1 would have failed without Halo. MS' is cruising on 3rd party ATM. It isn't hurting them, but it won't kill the competition either. Arguably, MS could have knocked Sony out after 2007 if they played their cards right. When it comes down to it, it really doesn't matter, micrsoft is selling consoles so why invest 100 million into a game or studio that may flop.

Microsoft barely had any new IPs last gen, either. Phantom Dust is something they should go back to.

They didn't waste their $500 million... they probably earned that back in less than a month since Kinect is pure profit for Microsoft. I mean, 2.5 million Kinects were sold in 10 days -- that's nearly 400 million in revenue right there. And since they make nearly $100 profit per Kinect, they probably well passed that investment.[QUOTE="James161324"]:? Why invest billions into the console market if you aren't doing it right? Its micrsoft why did they relase vista, or why did they close down one of the best pc studios. No one knows.
They knew how to get it out first and thats what has helped their sales, along with some great advertising. I think it shows you don't need an amazing exclusive lineup to do well. Plus price point is big one

Way to be wrong. Go work in retail- you'll come to find out that people buy the Xbox 360 because it is initially "cheaper" to them. People are easily swayed into buying a PS3 once you explain everything to them, especially once you mention that PSN is free instead of an arbitrary $60 a year.

that to, but it does sell becuase of the online to certian gamers. If people were so easierly swayed ps3 would be outselling the 360

Another issue with retail- nobody has the guts to explain things in great detail.

True, but it doesn't matter to them if they sell 1k ps3 or 360. But if sony advertised better i think it would have done better. Micrsoft advertises to the stupid consumer

But who cares? most these games suck ..... imo.omho88

Nah, I always hated G and ME, AW looks cool tho. And since I am a cow mostly, I should be liking them since they could make an appearence on the PS3 as well.[QUOTE="James161324"]

If you judge by Kinect sales, I don't think the money was wasted.Cows love to throw around that 500 million number like MS is strapped for cash now...They are making major profits from Kinect, even with the 500 million ad budget
short of alan wake Microsoft wouldn't have been able to buy those IPs why is it you think they could have just plopped down cash and said its ours now...the owner has to okay the purchase.
gears is owned by epic but Microsoft published the first 3 games so bar a name change it wont appear on ps3.
bioware at the time mass effect was made was being in the first stages courted by EA so...

and the gen before that. Lemmings seem to forget that Sony has delivered a much better gaming experience than Microsoft. Bet 90% of the 360 fanboys owned a PS1 and PS2.
360 might be just slightly ahead of Sony this gen but the Xbox brand is no where near the level of the Playstation brand.

With $500 mill being blown on advertising, im not so sure its a case of the owner having to okay the purchase, more a reflection of M$'s priorities in the business and thats advertising >>>>>>>> Live Fees>>>>>>> casual shovelware to sell to the unsuspecting masses >>>>>>>> funding and developing original ips
Whoopsie, I forgot this bad boy-

It is quite relevant, my dear fanboy. Sony and Nintendo continued to pump out massive exclusives all of the time.
