no, you can't compare. your pressing "attack" of a menu.... there's nothing more boring, i used to like FF, until i realised i wasn't actually enjoying my self
The story was terrible, I mean it should have focused more on character development and not just the politics. I didn't care about any of the characters throughout the game, and the only place the story actually picked up was in the last five hours out of my sixty-some hour playthrough.
But, I thought the gameplay was great. The gambit system was incredibly deep, the graphics were amazing, music score was iffy but the rest of the sound was better. It had a lot better voice acting than some of the crap in FFX (though FFX is amazing too.)
How did this game get a 9.0? It is so boring. The story is so lame. The game play is mind numbing. Run up to an enemy, maybe give a command. Boring!!!!ecoterrorist
your arguement/complaint is about as well thought out and articulated as your "jacking into the matrix" thread. bravo.
I thought it was the best FF (except for FF8 which was the first i played and left a powerfull impression).
The story was good and much more mature than some would have liked, having pride, greed, self sacrifice and responsability in foreground in a very realistic manner rather than your classic fantasy love story (though it had a bit of that too), butsadly a lot of kids didn't understand it hence the complains on some forums. The gameplay was absolutelly fantastic and quite innovative for the FF games andthe graphics, sound and especially voice acting were really outstanding.
Really, a flawless game which got a well deserved 40/40 from the respectable gaming publication Famitsu.
I'm just an FF fan in general. I felt it was a great game with the battle system and story. Only thing that disappointed me was I felt nothing for most of the characters. They gave you so many and they had nothing unique about them. I ran into the same problem I do with strategy rpg's. My core group gets ungodly powerful and I only switch out new guys if there's something else I want. Killed it a bit for me when two of my guys could heal themselves and tank at the same time. Easiest last boss ever.
I guess I could have taken on challenges and limited myself to class types, but...I'm not that motivated.
I don't disagree with the 9.0

No.
It's not logic, it's his opinion.
Come on, do people really think so little of Balthier and Fran? They were such unique characters that were supremely voiced and rendered. TheCrazed420
It had good production values, I'll give it that, but the game isn't that good. Balthier is a dick who places too much importance on himself (always refers to himself as the leading man), and Fran looks like a Playboy bunny who forgot to clip her toenails. The game itself makes you wonder what the hell the game will let you do (as opposed to doing things for you). You don't even have to MOVE YOUR CHARACTER IN BATTLE. The game does that for you.

Hmm, I have to totally disagree.
Balthier is a charmer. A bit smug, but nonetheless a ladies man, who enjoys the spotlight. He rode the fine line between being a dick and just being confident, and I thought he was the latter. Fran being compared to a Playboy Bunny is a pretty weak argument against her, she had an awesome backstory and an even better exotic voice. The two together actually had chemistry, which is rare in games, but it was there. When he saved her towards the end I really felt relieved and happy. Any game that gets an emotional reaction from me deserves credit, because it doesnt happen often.
And the Gambit system is AMAZING. You don't want to use it, fine. Keep pressing X thru the menus the same way every battle, with slight variations. But if you do want to use it, its customizability was impressive. Set up your healers to heal anytime someone dips under 30%, cure poison when affected, attack weak to fire foes, etc. Instead of going thru battle after battle of button masihing, it instead encouraged you to go back into the gambit system and tweak your setup, trying to maximize your players AI's. Totally innovative and one of the best things to come out of FF or RPG's in general in a while.

Ladies man? I don't remember Fran and Ashe wanting to sleep with him. And he rode the line ON being a dick. I have other arguments, like her somewhat garbled speech, her only purpose being a magic encyclopedia for the party, and being an outcast for reasons that are never elaborated on and don't affect the story (disregarding that one mission to the Henne Mines). Chemistry? There wasn't much communication between them. Or from any other character. Maybe the occasional line from Vaan or Penelo, but other than that, the spotlight seemed to love Ashe and a little bit of Basch. The gambit system takes control away from the player. I know that you watched battles in previous Final Fantasy's, but you were actively participating in them. You actually felt like you were doing something. Here, just set up one system of gambtis for the three characters you plow through the game with and set down the controller as you type on the forums. Magic restoration with each step is fine, but can be easily exploited. I have a Lego wedge that I can shove between the two analog sticks so that the character runs in a circle, restoring MP while I watch something on Youtube. I've gone through most of the game with the same gambits and have experienced no major problems. And I have found a set of gambits on the Internet that lets you turbo level WITHOUT PLAYING. Give me something to do, FF12.
I thought there was a lot of interaction between the two, and the best ones didnt have speech. The facial animations were fantastic and left you to catch the subtleties in their eyes and face.
Again, the gambit system was OPTIONAL. If you think just watching battles is boring, then don't use it, simple as that. But for someone looking for a different battle system experience, constantly tweaking your party to become specialized to a specific style had an addicitve quality to it. You complain that it was too easy, yet you went online to take someone elses strategy to turbo level. You can only blame yourself for cheating yourself out of getting the satisfaction of making your own.
I agree with your opinion.
I believe the reviewer was either on crack or has absolutely no taste. Reviewers should not reward developers for making ugly, regressive gameplay mechanics. It's not the same as how some say that Halo 3 has weak combat. This is on a whole different level.
Recycling a combat system from an MMO for a single player game makes me feel physically ill.

Didn't see much interaction there either. The game kinda makes the gambit system the better option, because this time, you're managing many factors in real time. The other ones were either turn based and let you take a moment to think things through or ATB so you did it one at a time. I haven't used the strategy, and I haven't finished the game. But from the looks of it, it does not seem to be improving any time soon. And I've played fairly late into the game, nothing like just up to the Airship Leviathan. The game also has a story that's confusing and pretentious. I keep a list of words that make me pause the game and look them up. They are:
ensanguined
capriciously
deifacted
mummer
amphora
fulminate
eventide
maundering
hark
Why couldn't they use words that people understand? Or does the game think its Shakespearian? I understood Shakespeare better than I do FF12. Get me a passage from Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, Romeo & Juliet, or something like that. I'm sure its less cryptic.

Lol, yeah, it did come off a little pretentious and convoluted at times. But to me, at this point in the series, I would rather see them attempt a more mature story and fail(though not completely), then regurgitate another melodramatic love story about saving the world.
I thought the ending was great though, it picks up the tempo towards the end and has a great finale. Finish it, you can do it! :P

Then they should compromise and go back to the days of FF6. Great story, didn't get in the way of the gameplay, and was easy to understand. Espers banished years ago, empire's getting magic, stop the evil clown mage with magic esper lady! And I do plan on finishing it, only because Revenant Wings looks intruiging.

Yeah I'll be getting that too, though Penelo was pretty dull, so I question her being thrust into a lead role.
